In this lab my group and I viewed the process of osmosis, the diffusion of only water across a

membrane from an area of low to high concentration, using de-shelled chicken eggs. In this experiment
we determined the isotonic point of the chicken egg after being submerged in the sucrose concentrated
solutions, and the estimated percentage of sucrose concentration in the Unknown solution. It was
predicted that placing the eggs in the various solutions would cause them to either decrease, increase,
or relatively stay the same weight depending on the percentage of sucrose concentration inside the
egg’s membrane and in the surrounding solution. To begin the lab, we first calculated the weight of the
two eggs then carefully placed them in separate solution jars labeled 0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 30% and
Unknown sucrose concentrations. My group worked with the 30% sucrose concentrated jars while the
remaining jars were divided between the class. Every 15 minutes for a total of 75 minutes, the eggs
were carefully taken out of the jar, dried off, and weighed. If the egg decreased in weight, we can
conclude that it was placed in a Hypertonic solution since water has left the eggs membrane to the
higher sucrose particles in the surrounding solution. If the egg increased in weight, we can conclude that
it was placed in a Hypotonic solution since water entered through the egg’s membrane to the area with
high sucrose particles. If the egg is in an Isotonic solution the mass will relatively stay the same, meaning
the sucrose particles are close to equal on both the inside and outside of the eggs membrane, there is
an even flow of water entering and leaving the membrane.
