7.1
The north pointing characteristics of the gyro-
compass is, as well known, are produced by the earth's
rotation. When aship equipped with a gyrocompass moves
on the earth, the gyrocompass is under the influence
of the combined movement of the earth's rotation and
the ship's own movement.
When a ship sails
just to east o r to west,
the direction of the combined
movement is same to it of t h c
earth's rotation, and ttir
indication of the gyrocorttpi1s.s
is not changed. However, w h e r ~ FIG. 7.1

the ship sails on a nortllor.ly (IT- 5 o u ttierlv course, the

the north-south component of +lit. chip's movement is
combined to the earth's r o t a t ioll qriti affects the indi-
cation of the gyrocompass. Accnt-dingly, the gyrocompass
does not indicate the true o o l ~ r s e in such case.
When the indication (3 f tllc p;vrocompass is deviated
by the angle 6, this is p r . o l \ o r t i onal to the noth-
south component of the shlp's 5pcq>d and inversely pro-
portional to the cosine of the latitude. Such value has
nothing to do with the size o r . t,ype of the gyrocompass
and called "SPEED ERROR".
Although such value is v e r y small, it is necessary
to obtain correct inforrnatioll of the ship's course, by
correcting the indication in consider-ation of the speed
error.
I n Fig.7.1 FArepresents Line Speed Kcosy o f the
A

earth's rotation and AB the ship's speed.

Although the gyrocompass indicates as if A N 1 , w h i c h
4

is at right angle to OB, is north, true north is AN,

which is at right angle to OA. The ship's course is
measured with AN' as standard and the ship's course is 0 .
At AABC ...... AC = V C O S ~

~t AAOC ...... AC = K c o s y sin6

. sin6 = Vcose / Kcosy = 6
Example: When a ship is at the equator and is
sailing to north (gyro indication) at
speed 30 Kt, h e r speed error value is
calculated as follows ;
tj = 30 cosoO/ 900 cosOO
= 0.0333 radian
= 1°54' (to west)
The above 900 represents the line speed knot of
the earth's rotation o n the equator.
For the information of the operater, the charts
indicating the speed error value at each ship's speed,
course and latitude are attached in the next pages.
