Apple Maps: How to Find a Nearby Gas Station

These instructions will teach you step-by-step how to use Apple Maps to get directions to the
nearest gas stations. Apple Maps is convenient for when you are unfamiliar with an area or
would like to see what is closest to you. You will not only learn how to find the nearest gas
station, but you will also learn how to access information about the nearby gas stations (star
ratings, addresses, phone numbers, etc.). With location services turned on, this process should
take only a matter of minutes. These instructions can be similarly applied to find nearby
restaurants, shopping centers, hotels, and so much more.

WARNING: Do not attempt these instructions while driving.

Note: If you are unaware of your location, make sure you have location services enabled.

Enabling Location Services

1. Open ​Settings​ and scroll down. Select ​Privacy​.

2. Select ​Location Services​ ​(It should be the first option).​ ​ Split Step 2
a. Tap the switch next to ​Location Services ​to enable it. ​When turned on, the switch
will be green.
 b. Scroll down until you see ​Maps​. ​For location services to be enabled specifically
for Apple Maps, the status should say “While Using.”

3. Click on ​Maps​ if the status says “Never” and change it to “While Using.”

Using Maps to Find a Nearby Gas Station

1. Open Apple Maps by clicking the app icon . ​If location services are turned off, the
app will open with a pop up asking to turn them on.

2. Tap the search bar that says “search for a place or address”. ​The tab will expand and
underneath the search bar, there will be categories to choose from.

3. Tap the ​Transportation​ category. ​A new variety of categories will appear.

4. Tap the ​Gas Stations ​category.

5. Use your finger to drag up the list of nearby gas stations. ​The closest location will appear
at the top of the list.

6. Tap the gas station you would like directions to and then click ​Directions​. ​Information
about the gas station, such as the address, phone number, and rating is often listed below
​ irections​.

7. Use your finger to drag up the lower tab of the page. ​If more than one route is listed, the
first one is the quickest.
a. If you would prefer to avoid highways and/or tolls, select ​Driving Options​,
which is located under the available routes. From there, you can select either or
both options.
 8. Select the route by tapping ​GO​. ​Apple Maps will direct you to the gas station from your

9. Tap ​End​ to close the navigation.

Whether you are taking a road trip or just looking for the nearest amenity, Apple Maps can give
you clear directions to wherever you would like to go. Hopefully, you now understand how to
use the app and will take advantage of what it has to offer.
Scenario 2 Instructions

Finding a Nearby Gas Station on Apple Maps without Location Services

Enabling location services does provide the quickest and most accurate directions when using
Apple Maps, but you can still get directions without using location services by providing your
current address. These instructions will show you how to find the nearest gas station without
disclosing or tracking your exact location with Apple Maps. You can similarly apply these
instructions to find other amenities, such as hotels, shopping centers, restaurants, and hospitals.

WARNING: Do not attempt these instructions while driving.

Note: you must know your current address and have a general idea of where your location
is on a map.

1. Open Apple Maps .

2. Tap the search bar to search for an address.
3. Select the ​Transportation​ category.
4. Select ​Gas Stations​.
5. Toggle the Map to find your location. ​There will be no location marker since Location
Services are not on.
6. Select the gas station that is closest to your location on the map.
7. Select ​Directions​ and type your current address.

8. Select ​Route​ and tap ​GO​.

While having location services turned on is more convenient, Apple Maps can still give you
directions without using your location.
