To nearest 10 = To nearest 10 = To nearest 10 =

To nearest 100 = To nearest 100 = To nearest 100 =

To nearest 1000 = To nearest 1000 = To nearest 1000 =

TASK 2 Who am I?

TASK 3 Estimating

Leading figure rounding is where a number is rounded to its highest place value eg 637 would round to
the nearest hundred (600) while 74 592 would round to the nearest ten thousand (70 000). This is very
useful when estimating answers mentally.
Estimate the answers to these calculations by rounding each number to its leading figure. Use
a calculator to determine the exact answer and compare this with your estimate. The first example has
been started for you.

a 6892 + 14 320 ≈ 7000 + 10 000 b 312 × 47

=
Exact answer = 21 212

c 19 530 ÷ 372 d 37.95 × 23 + 6.38 × 57
