Estimating Sums
Sometimes we don't need to know the exact
answer of an addition problem.
We just want a rough idea of what the answer is
going to look like.
Example
You went to the toy store to buy a toy car that costs 33 JOD
and a toy truck that costs 29 JOD, how much money will you
roughly pay?

• 33 is close to 30
• 29 is also close to 30
• 30 + 30 = 60 JOD
• So, you will pay about 60 JOD.
Rule
• To estimate a sum:
572 + 128 + 320
1. Round each term to its largest digit.
572 is 600 rounded to the nearest hundred
128 is 100 rounded to the nearest hundred
320 is 300 rounded to the nearest hundred
2. Add the rounded numbers.
600 + 100 + 300 = 1000
Estimate the following sums.
1. 78 + 24 + 35
80 + 20 + 40 = 80 + 60 = 140
2. 589 + 879 + 231
600 + 900 + 200 = 600 + 1100 = 1,700
3. 879 + 321
900 + 300 = 1,200
4. 564 + 553 + 590
600 + 600 + 600 = 1,800

Estimating Differences
Much like estimating sums, sometimes we don't
need to know the exact answer of a
subtraction problem.
We just want a rough idea of what the answer is
going to look like.
Rule
• To estimate a difference:
923 - 197 - 311
1. Round each term to its largest digit.
923 is 900 rounded to the nearest hundred
197 is 200 rounded to the nearest hundred
311 is 300 rounded to the nearest hundred
2. Replace the original terms in the problem with the
rounded ones.
900 - 200 - 300 = 400
Example
Mohammad sold a car for 940 JOD, he repaired it before selling
it, by changing the engine for 353 JOD and the gearbox for
112 JOD. Estimate the difference between the car's price and the
repairs?

• 940 is close to 900

• 353 is close to 400
• 112 is close to 100
• 900 – 400 – 100 = 400 JOD
Estimate the following differences.
1. 51 - 19
50 - 20 = 30
2. 643 - 339
600 – 300 = 300
3. 76 - 31 – 19
80 – 30 - 20 = 50 – 20 = 30
4. 899 - 163 - 249
900 - 200 - 200 = 700 - 200 = 500
(a) How Much Flour is Left?
A bakery has 5300 g of flour. It uses 1400 g of flour each day to bake bread.
