WEEK 1
Topic:- Revision, Counting and Writing of Numbers up to 9,999

Counting in Ones
• To count on in ones means adding 1 to a given number in order
to get the next number. The number increases by 1. 
       E.g  1, 2, 3, 4, …5…,    6……,   ……7…,    ……8…, 
              53, 54, 55, 56, …57…,58 ……,  ………,  ……….
              4297, 4298, 4299, 4300, 4301, ……,  ……,  …….
• To count back in ones is to subtract 1 from a given number to
get the next. The numbers are decreasing by 1
         E.g  9, 8, 7, 6, 5, ……,   ………,   ……,  …….  ……..
                 103, 102, 101, 100, 99, ……,  ………,   ……
4004, 4003, 4002, 4001, 4000,
3999,  ………,   ……,  
……..                                                                                           
Counting on in tens
• Counting on in tens means adding ten on to the previous number
in the sequence.
• Example 1 : 10, 20, 30, …..,   ……,   …… ……  …...  ……..,
• Answer = 10, 20, 30,   40,   50,   60, 70,   80,   90,   
• Example 2:  100, 110, ……, ……., …….., ……, ………, …..
• Answer = 100, 110,  120, 130, 140, 150, 160, 170

Counting forward and backward in thousands.


• Counting in thousands is similar to hundreds but this time, we
use thousands.
• E.g, Counting on, we have:
1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000.
• Counting back, we have:
5000, 4000, 3000, 2000, 1000

Example 1
Fill in the missing numbers.
i. ____; 495 ; 500 ; ____; ____.
Answers: 490, 505, 510
ii. 1,222 ; 1,224 ; 1,226 ; 1,228 ; 1,228 ; _____
Answers: 1230

Example 2
Write the numbers that come before and after the following.

Answers: 515

Write out the missing numbers.

WEEK 2
TOPIC: Place value of numbers up to 10,000

Example 1: What is the place value of each digit in 3,984.

Thousands Hundreds Tens Units

3 9 8 6

 Place value of 3 is 3 thousands or 3,000.


 Place value of 9 is 9 hundreds or 900.
 Place value of 8 is 8 tens or 80.
 Place value of 6 is 6 units or 6.

 Further examples.
 Example 3: What is the place value of 9 in 9,618?
The answer is 9,000 or 9 thousands.
 Example 4: What is the place value of 7 in 8,723?
The answer is 700 or 7 hundreds.
 Example 5: What is the place value of 6 in 8,164?
The answer is 60 or 6 tens.

FURTHER EXAMPLES
Show the value of the digits in 4,795
 4,7 9 5 = 4000 + 700 + 90 + 5
 59,642 = 50000 + 9000 + 600 + 40 + 2

 Find the place value of the following numbers.

Activity 1
Write the figures below in words
1. 7802 = Seven thousand, eight hundred and two.
2. 88112 = Eighty-eight thousand, one hundred and twelve

2. 53008 = Fifty-three thousand and eight.
