Place value and ordering

Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be
able to:
i. interpret decimal notation and place value
ii. multiply whole numbers and decimals by 10,
100 or 1000
iii. divide whole numbers and decimals by 10,
100 or 1000 and
iv. order decimals, including measurements,
changing these to the same units.
Place value
Worked example
What is the value of each digits in 4 683?
Solution
4 683 can be placed in a table like this:

Thousands Hundreds Tens Units

4 6 8 3

The 4 is worth 4 000

The 6 is worth 600
The 8 is worth 80
The 3 is worth 3
Place value

Thousands Hundreds Tens Units Tenths Hundredths

7 9 3 2 6 4
Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000
When we multiply whole numbers by 10, we simply
rewrite the numbers and put one zero at the end.
Worked examples
1) 45 x 10 = 450

2) 560 x 10 = 5600

3) 875 x 10 = 8 750
Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000
When we multiply whole numbers by 100, we simply
rewrite the numbers and put two zeros at the end.
Worked examples

1) 45 x 100 = 4 500

2) 560 x 100 = 56 000

3) 875 x 100 = 87 500

Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000
When we multiply whole numbers by 1000, we simply
rewrite the numbers and put two zeros at the end.
Worked examples

1) 45 x 1000 = 45 000

2) 560 x 1000 = 560 000

3) 875 x 1000 = 875 000

Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000
When multiplying decimal numbers by 10, Move the
decimal point one step to the right (10 has one zero)

Worked examples
1) 4.5 x 10 = 45

2) 56.31 x 10 = 563.1

3) 87.5 x 10 = 875
Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000
When multiplying decimal numbers by 100, Move the decimal point
two steps to the right (100 has two zeros)

Worked examples
1) 4.583 x 100 = 458.3

2) 56.31 x 100 = 5 631

3) 87.5 x 100 = 8 750

Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000
When multiplying decimal numbers by 1000, Move
the decimal point three steps to the right (1000 has
three zeros)
Worked examples
4. 0.578 x 1000 = 578
1. 4.583 x 1000 = 4 583

2. 56.31 x 1000= 56 310 5. 0.0743 x 1000 = 74.3
