Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be

i. interpret decimal notation and place value
ii. multiply whole numbers and decimals by 10,
100 or 1000
iii. divide whole numbers and decimals by 10,
100 or 1000 and
iv. order decimals, including measurements,
changing these to the same units.

What is the value of each digits in 4 683?
Solution
4 683 can be placed in a table like this:
2) 560 x 10 = 5600
3) 875 x 10 = 8 750
Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000
When we multiply whole numbers by 100, we simply
rewrite the numbers and put two zeros at the end.

1) 45 x 100 = 4 500
1) 45 x 1000 = 45 000

When multiplying decimal numbers by 100, Move the decimal point
two steps to the right (100 has two zeros)
