You are on page 1of 14

What you will learn:

• Add positive and negative integers

• Subtract positive and negative
integers
What you will learn : Add positive and negative
integers
Remember
• To add numbers (including negatives) on the number line using
jumps:
-5 + 7
1. The first term in the sum determines where you should start on the
number line.
We start at –5 on the number line

2. The second term determines how many jumps we should make to

the right
So we make 7 jumps to the right starting from –5, we land on 2.
So: –5 + 7 = 2
(b) Seagulls Catching Fish
A seagull dived 5 m into the water to
catch fish. Then it flew 35 m upwards. 30
At what height above the water was
the seagull flying?

–5 + 35 = 30

The seagull was flying at a height of

30 m above the water.

Calculate the following sums.
1. -7 + 17 = -7 + 7 + 10 = 0 + 10 = 10
2. -3 + 23 = -3 + 3 + 20 = 0 + 20 = 20
3. -30 + 35 = -30 + 30 + 5 = 0 + 5 = 5
4. -100 + 104 = -100 + 100 + 4 = 4
5. -8 + 208 = -8 + 8 + 200 = 200
6. -100 + 107 = -100 + 100 + 7 = 7
7. -6 + 506 = -6 + 6 + 500 = 500
8. -500 + 510 = -500 + 500 + 10

What you will learn : Subtract positive and
negative integers
Remember
• To subtract numbers (including negatives) on the number line using
jumps:
3-5
1. The first term in the expression determines where you should start
on the number line.
We start at 3 on the number line

2. The second term determines how many jumps we should make to

the left
So, we make 5 jumps to the left starting from 3, we land on -2.
So: 3 - 5 = -2
(b) What is the Lowest Temperature?
The highest temperature recorded in a desert on a
certain day was 45°C. The temperature difference –10
between the highest and lowest temperatures on that
day was 50°C.Find the lowest temperature on that day.

45 – 50 = –5
The lowest temperature on that day was –5°C.

Calculate the following sums.
1. 1 – 11 = 1 – 1 – 10 = 0 - 10 = -10
2. 20 - 25 = 20 – 20 – 5 = 0 - 5 = -5
3. 100 - 104 = 100 – 100 – 4 = 0 - 4 = -4
4. 3 - 303 = 3 – 3 – 300 = -300
5. 400 – 412 = 400 – 400 – 12 = -12
6. 10 – 510 = 10 – 10 – 500 = -500
7. 8 - 108 = 8 – 8 - 100 = -100
8. 300 – 322 = 300 – 300 – 22 = -22
