Using Mental Math to Add Use one of the following mental math strategies to add: Use FRIENDLY NUMBERS

a) to add: 137 + 298 298 is 300 - 2 Add 300 then take away 2. 137 + 300 = 437 437 2 = 435 b) to add: 170 + 343 170 + 30 = 200 343 - 30 = 313 So, 170 + 343 = 200 + 313 = 513

Using Mental Math to Subtract

Math in Portable 10
Mrs. Kroeker Amy. Murphy@ocdsb.ca

Use one of the following mental math strategies to subtract: Use FRIENDLY NUMBERS a) to subtract 516 299 Add 1 to 299 to make 300 Add 1 to 516 to make 517 Write 516 299 as 517 300 = 217 So, 516 299 = 217 b) to subtract 347 - 205 Subtract 200 instead of 205 Think: 347 200 = 147 Then subtract 5. 147 5 = 142 So, 347 205 = 142

Our Learning Goals
- I can read and write numbers up to 10 000 in multiple ways - I can make numbers up to 10 000 using base ten blocks

Use ADDING ON a) to add: 264 + 323 Add on hundreds, add on tens, then add on ones Think: 323 + 200 + 60 + 4 Count on by 100 two times: 323, 423, 523 Count on by 10 six times: 523, 533, 543, 553, 563, 573, 583 Then add 4: 583 + 4 = 587

Use COUNTING ON a) to subtract: 432 - 220 For 432 -220, count on from 220 Count: 220 320 420 430 432 +100 +100 +10 = 212

- I can add and subtract 4digit numbers - I can use mental math strategies to find sums and differences - I can estimate sums and differences by rounding digits

Whole Numbers to 10 000 your thinking! ** We can read & write numbers to 10 000**
The position of a digit in a number determines what the digit represents. Numbers can be taken a part and written in many ways! Standard Form: 6 724 Expanded Form: 6 000 + 700 + 20 + 4 In words: Six thousand seven hundred twenty-four Place Value Chart
Thousands 6 (6 000) (20) (4) Hundreds 7 Tens 2 (700) Ones 4

Rounding **We can round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, or 1 000** Why ROUND numbers?
Rounding numbers makes it easier to do calculations in our head. We use rounding to estimate a quantity.

Explain Communication & Assessment

Students will be assessed on the process of their calculations as well as the explanation of their thinking. More on assessment to come! Students should be able to explain/prove how they know that: - 6 724 is greater than 3 452 Starting on the left, I looked at the thousands place value. Since they are different (6 & 3) I can compare them. 3 452 has fewer thousands so it is the smaller number (3 000 is less than
