• The Hindu-Arabic System is convenient for it uses only 10 symbols. The ten symbols can
be used more than once in a number because our numeration system uses place value.
• he Hindu-Arabic or decimal system, because of its place value system, makes possible to
write whatever number or quantity no matter how large it is.
• A number is composed of digits that stand for a value depending on its place value.
• Place value tells the position of a digit in a number.
• The value of a digit depends on its position or place value in a numeral.
• Numbers from 21 up to 99 except for the multiples of ten, are written in word form.
• To compare numbers, we compare each digit from the highest place value to the lowest
place value.
• We use symbols in comparing numbers such as:
>greater than
<less than
=equal
• Rounding off numbers is a form of estimation.
• There are rules to follow in rounding off numbers:
- If the number you are rounding is followed by 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round the number up.
Example: 38 rounded to the nearest ten is 40. ...
- If the number you are rounding is followed by 0, 1, 2, 3, or
4, round the number down. Example: 33 rounded to the nearest ten is 30.
• Ordinal numbers tell us the position of an object in a list or in a row.
All ordinal numbers end in th except numbers ending with 1, 2, and 3.
