Rounding off to the nearest ten thousand (10,000):

If the digit in the thousand’s place in a number is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 then round to the nearest multiple
of ten thousand which is smaller than the given number.

If the digit in the thousand’s place in a number is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 then round to the nearest multiple
of ten thousand which is greater than the given number.

Thus, to round off numbers to the nearest ten thousand look at the digit in the one thousands
place.

For example, round the following numbers to the nearest ten thousand

  T. Th    Th         H            T            O

    4          6           2             7            9        →            50000

    8          0           1             5            3        →            80000

    6          5           0             0            0        →            70000

    9          6           2             5            1        →           100000

    8          3           1             0            1        →            80000

Rounding off to the nearest hundred thousand (100,000):

If the digit in the ten thousand’s place in a number is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 then round to the nearest
multiple of hundred thousand which is smaller than the given number.

If the digit in the ten thousand’s place in a number is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 then round to the nearest
multiple of hundred thousand which is greater than the given number.

Thus, to round off numbers to the nearest hundred thousand, look at the digit in the ten thousand
place.
For example, round the following numbers to the nearest hundred thousand

H. Th        T. Th       Th         H           T            O

    2             5           6          1            5            7             →            300000

    8             4           5          1            0            5             →            800000

    7             5           0          0            0            0             →            800000

    9             5           6          3            9            2             →           1000000

Rounding off to the nearest million (1,000,000):

If the digit in the hundred thousand’s place in a number is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 then round to the nearest
multiple of one million which is smaller than the given number.

If the digit in the hundred thousand’s place in a number is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 then round to the nearest
multiple of one million which is greater than the given number.

Thus, to round off numbers to the nearest one million, look at the digit in the hundred thousand
place.

For example, round the following numbers to the nearest one million

M         H. Th      T. Th       Th         H          T              O

 4            1             8           6          2          9              1        →       4000000

 6            9             4           8          0          6              1        →       7000000

 8            5             1           0          0          0              0        →       9000000

Rounding off to the nearest ten million (10,000,000):

If the digit in the one million’s place in a number is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 then round to the nearest
multiple of ten million which is smaller than the given number.

If the digit in the one million’s place in a number is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 then round to the nearest
multiple of ten million which is greater than the given number.

Thus, to round off numbers to the nearest ten million, look at the digit in the one million place.
For example, round the following numbers to the nearest ten million

T. M      M         H. Th     T. Th       Th       H         T         O

  2         7             5            6           1        3        1         5      →   30000000

  9         1             8            4           6        2        5         6      →   90000000

  1         5             0            0           0        0        5          9     →   20000000
