A REACTION PAPER 2

A Reaction paper to “who moved my cheese?” by Dr. Spencer Johnson

The first change I have experienced after reading “who moved my cheese?” is the ability

to be aware of my immediate environment. The two mice Scurry and Sniff were always mindful

of the fact that the supply of cheese was decreasing every day; hence they were not taken off-

guard when they noticed that there was no cheese left. However, when Haw and Hem saw

depletion in the cheese supply they were surprised, and they naturally thought someone had

moved their cheese. The cheese in the story is a metaphor for our comfort zones in life like a

good job, and the ability to be more keen and observant about what is happening around you will

always prepare you for what is ahead.

The second change I experienced was to be able to monitor change. In the story, Scurry

and Sniff scrutinised their supply of cheese every day, and they observed that the supply was

decreasing. When one day they noticed that the inevitable had happened, they put on their

running shoes and went in search of a new cheese station. On the other hand, the little people had

become too comfortable and shielded from the reality that the supply would eventually run out

that they did not notice its decreasing supply until it was no more. They were stunned since they

had not kept an eye on the declining supply. Monitoring change enables one prepare for what is

to come.

The third change I experienced was the need to adapt to change quickly. The two mice

friends Scurry and Sniff acclimatised to their present situation quickly; there was no more cheese

left so they put on back their running shoes and went in search of new cheese. However, the two

little people, Haw and Hem did not let their present situation sink on rather they chose to live in

the past while they hoped and waited for whoever moved their cheese to bring it back. The two

mice eventually found a new cheese station while Haw and Hem starved.
A REACTION PAPER 3

The fourth change I experienced was the knowledge that I should embrace change.

Change is inevitable. Scurry and Sniff knew that over time they would need to put on back their

running shoes, and so they hung them around their necks. When finally it was time to move on,

they put back on their running shoes and did what they knew; Sniff used his long nose to smell

the location of the cheese while Scurry ran ahead, and they finally found a new cheese station.

On the other hand, the little people Haw and Hem clinched on to their past and did not accept

that the cheese had ran out. They kept going back to the cheese-less station hoping to find that

their cheese would be returned until they were starving. However, Haw finally embraced the

change and set out to look for a new cheese station, which he ultimately found.

Lastly, I learnt that I ought to enjoy the change. Eventually, Haw decided to move with

the cheese; he was afraid that he might never find new cheese or get lost, but he admitted that it

felt good to be on the adventure. Sometimes he got lost in the maze, while other times he was too

hungry and weak to continue but the imagination of how the new cheese would taste on his lips,

kept him going. Haw finally made it to Cheese Station N, where there was a surplus of cheese.
