Since I discovered the field of Healthcare Administration, I have always had a strong passion for the topic. Through my studies this year, I intend to pursue and deepen my understanding of the daily tasks and functionality of Healthcare Administration. I cannot say that Healthcare Administration was my first career interest. I spent a majority of my childhood aspiring to pursue becoming a Pediatrician. The idea of helping kids, wearing a uniform, and getting highly paid was everything I wanted in a job. Although it was not until the end of freshman year that I decided I did not want to become a doctor. When I got to high school I began to research more about the medical field and it came to my attention that you have to complete 8 years of medical school after college. Although becoming a Pediatrician fascinated me, I wanted to gain first hand experience in the career field of my choice and be able to achieve an internship with a company immediately after college. During freshman year two of my electives were Medical Terminology and Business Information Management. Medical Terminology focused on the essential concepts of human anatomy and physiology and the common medical terms related to the body systems. We would learn about patient case studies that highlights the real-world application of medical terminology, coverage of diseases and conditions, diagnostic procedures, surgical and therapeutic treatments, and drug therapies. This course not only allowed me to gain knowledge on medical terminology and how it’s applied but it also gave me a feel for what medical hospitals were like and how they run. Apart from this, in Business Information Management strengthened my knowledge and taught me to apply technical skills to address business applications of emerging technologies, creating word-processing documents, develop a spreadsheet, formulate a database, and make an electronic presentation using appropriate software. These two courses fascinated me and I decided to put two in two together and researched career fields that incorporates the medical and management side and discovered I wanted to pursue Healthcare Administration. This worked out perfectly because I found that I was academically strong in my math and science classes and I began talking to Healthcare Administrators in my older friends and they appeared to have the same interests and personality type as me. According to the Myers-Briggs personality type indicator, I am a Consul and their traits are so strongly expressed, leading with practical sense and social vigor, the careers they find usually revolve around these traits. As a Healthcare Administrator being social is a key aspect of this career field because you have to be able to talk to doctors and occasionally patients and practical sense is also really important because you need to know how to make decisions on the spot especially when you work at a hospital. Careers as administrators are a natural fit, allowing Consuls to organize not just an environment, but the people in it. they need human interaction and emotional feedback to be truly satisfied in their line of work. This trait is significantly applicable in Healthcare Administration when they are budgeting, ordering medical supplies and maintaining employee records. Consul personalities’ comfort with busy social situations and practical knowledge and skills come together to create people who are not just able to be productive and helpful, but people who genuinely enjoy it. This is applicable to my career field interest because hospitals are constantly on a busy schedule and they need a team of administrators that are able to make quick and effective decisions by working together. Known for their social and administrative skills, Consuls are good at creating and maintaining a secure, stable and friendly environment for themselves and their loved ones. The two key aspects of Healthcare Administration are your management skills and being social which fall hand in hand with my personality type. Business Information Management has taught me numerous administrative skills and Medical Terminology gave me an abundance of knowledge in medical technology and terminology used in a hospital environment and how you are supposed to act and be social.
