Mentor Assessment #1

Shriya Thippana 03/07/2020

Within only one mentor visit and two interviews, Mr. Daniel Prince has exceeded my

expectations of a mentor. He's the nicest person I’ve ever met and is really glad to mentor me in

the Independent Study Mentorship Program for my topic, Healthcare Management. He’s the

owner of the Stonemere Rehabilitation Center and he’s an administrator. I plan on meeting with

him once a week for an hour or two depending on his availability. I think he’s the perfect mentor

for me because he’s a really nice person, he has a lot of experience within this field, he’s very

passionate about what he does, and he’s genuinely interested in mentoring someone and being a

part of the Independent Study and Mentorship program.

One thing I learned from my first mentor visit is that this is definitely not only a desk job.

There is a lot of moving around the facility for example, attending team meetings, discussing

certain medications for patients with nurses, and talking with other administrators. This made me

a little more relaxed because I initially hated the idea of desk jobs because you sit around 9-5pm

staring at a screen which personally sounds boring. But being active and moving around caught

my attention and motivated me to pursue this field even more. Another thing I’ve observed is

that since it’s a nursing home, during break times or even in general, these administrators go and

spend time with some patients and help out nurses with minor things like giving them food or

giving fresh clothes. This is another aspect that grabbed my attention because I enjoy interacting

with people because that makes your job more interactive and stimulating. These tasks overall fit

my personality because I love interacting with patients and not staying at one place when I work

as well as being more active. Most of my research included a variety of tasks for Healthcare

Administrators like organizing patient records, coordinating meetings, updating medications, etc.
To see these in action and implemented was really interesting and made me want to do

something like that in the future within their shoes.

Since it was my first mentor visit, it was mostly introductory, Mrs. Gurdeep Kaur

learned more about the ISM Program and informed me on the work that she did for that day and

her daily schedule which varies from day to day. But for my next visit she was going to show me

what a team meeting looked like and possibly a tour of the facility and where she spends most of

her time. The information I learned so far will always be with me for the future because now I’ll

know what to expect when you are working at a healthcare facility. Overall, from my first day I

really like the Healthcare Management field so far since I’ve been interested in it for a short

amount of time because I’ve been interested in Pediatrician for my entire life. But I'm really glad

that I’m getting to further understand this field and learn more about the daily tasks and

responsibilities.
