1.0 OBJECTIVES
1. Explain the characteristics of laser cutting in term of process, equipment, setup and their
applications.
2. Practice the laser cutting processes using to make variety of shapes and patterns.
3. Apply the soft skills such as communication skills, critical thinking and spirit of teamwork.
2.0 INTRODUCTION
Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut materials, and is typically used for industrial
manufacturing applications, but is also starting to be used by schools, small businesses, and
hobbyists. Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high-power laser most commonly
through optics. The laser optics and CNC (computer numerical control) are used to direct the
material or the laser beam generated. A commercial laser for cutting materials involved a
motion control system to follow a CNC or G-code of the pattern to be cut onto the material. The
focused laser beam is directed at the material, which then either melts, burns, vaporizes away,
or is blown away by a jet of gas, leaving an edge with a high-quality surface finish. Industrial
laser cutters are used to cut flat-sheet material as well as structural and piping materials. The
diagram below shows the processes and examples of products made from laser cutting machines
into various materials.

3.0 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
In this lab session, you are divided into groups of 4 or 5 people. Cut the mild plate sheet into
specific dimensions as shown in Appendix A. Use the AP100 software (CAM) and laser cutting
machine to form the plate into the requirement shape.
4.0 EQUIPMENTS/MATERIALS
Each group need to prepared one report and the report should contain the content as below;
a) Introduction
b) Material selection
c) Machine parameter
d) Experimental procedure / process flow/ positioning
e) Safety Procedure
f) Discussion
g) Conclusion
