WORKSHEET ON TORSION

1. What is the minimum diameter of a solid steel shaft that will not twist through more than
3° in a 6-m length when subjected to a torque of 12 kN·m? What maximum shearing
stress is developed? Use G = 83 GPa.
Ans: d = 113.98

2. An aluminum shaft with a constant diameter of

50 mm is loaded by torques applied to gears
attached to it as shown in figure below. Using G
= 28 GPa, determine the relative angle of twist of
gear D relative to gear A.
Ans: 6.34o

3. A compound shaft consisting of a steel segment and

an aluminum segment is acted upon by two torques
as shown in the figure. Determine the maximum
permissible value of T subject to the following
conditions: τst = 83 MPa, τal = 55 MPa, and the
angle of rotation of the free end is limited to 6°. For
steel, G = 83 GPa and for aluminu m, G = 28 GPa.
Ans: T = 679.04N.m

4. The compound shaft shown in the figure is attached to

rigid supports. For the bronze segment AB, the
diameter is 75 mm, τ ≤ 60 MPa, and G = 35 GPa. For
the steel segment BC, the diameter is 50 mm, τ ≤ 80
MPa, and G = 83 GPa. If a = 2 m and b = 1.5 m,
compute the maximum torque T that can be applied.
Ans: T =5.105kNm
5. A torque is applied to gear A of a two- shaft system and is transmitted through gears at B
and C to a fixed end at D. the shafts are made of steel (G = 80Gpa). Each shaft has a
diameter d = 32mm, and they are supported by frictionless bearings. If the torque applied
to gear A is 400Nm, and D is restrained, (a) determine the maximum shear stress in each
shaft, and (b) determine the angle of rotation of the gear A relative to its no load position.

Ans: (a) τAB = 62.17 MPa ,τCD = 35.53MPa

(b) 0.066216 rad

6. The solid cylinder AB and BC are bonded together at

B and attached to fixed supports at A and C. knowing
that AB is made of steel (G = 77 GPa) and BC of brass
(G=39GPa), determine for the loading shown
(a) the reaction at each support,
(b) the maximum shearing stress in AB,
(c) the maximum shearing stress in BC.
