ABSTRACT

We employed qualitative research specifically phenomenological study. We

were interested in the struggles, quality of communication and suggestions
of the students in using conyo language through interviews and participants’
experiences. We used one on one interview and observation as data
sources. The participants of the study were chosen through snowball
sampling which means that the participants were chosen randomly and was
not based from any criteria. The participants were the Grade 11 and Grade
12 learners of Ateneo de Davao Senior High School and the responses were
gathered through audio recordings. The information shared by the
participants was transcribed for analysis. The type of data analysis used is
thematic analysis, in which we identified, analyzed and interpreted patterns
of meanings obtained from the responses. The conyo language is a mongrel
language consisting of the Cebuano and the Tagalog/Filipino languages that
is a result from the contact of various cultures in the city. The study was
conducted and resulted to three major themes which were based on the core
ideas of the responses of the participants namely, Causes Discrimination,
Provides a Misunderstanding, and Influences of Friends and Peers. The
result of this study will be of help to the AdDU SHS learners, AdDU SHS
administrators and to linguistic practitioners and future researchers.
