Introduction
This Part of EN 599 is one of a series and should be
used in conjunction with EN 599-1, with EN 335-1 and
EN 335-2 which describe the service conditions for
treated wood in terms of hazard classes, and with
EN 351-1 which describes a classification system for
preservative treated wood in terms of preservative
penetration and gives guidance on classes for
retention. The need for wood preservatives depends in

part on the natural durability of the wood and
therefore this Part of EN 599 should be used also in
conjunction with EN 350-1, EN 350-2 and EN 460.
1 Scope
This Part of EN 599 specifies for each of the five
hazard classes defined in EN 335-1, requirements for
classifying and marking wood preservative products
according to their performance and suitability for use.
This Part of EN 599 is applicable to all wood
preservative products supplied for application in liquid
form for the preventive treatment of timbers (structural
and non-structural) against wood-attacking fungi,
wood-attacking insects and marine organisms as
described in HD 1001 and EN 335-1. However it is only
applicable to products for preventive treatments
against fungi causing disfigurement (blue stain) of
wood in service if this forms part of the overall
preventive effectiveness of the product.
This Part of EN 599 is not applicable to wood
preservative products supplied for application as
pastes, solids or in capsule form because they cannot
be tested without modification of the biological tests
demanded in this standard. It does not apply either to
wood preservative products for remedial (curative)
treatments, to those applied to prevent fungi causing
sap stain on green (unseasoned) timber or to those
applied solely to prevent fungi causing disfigurement
(blue stain) of wood in service.

3 Definitions
For the purposes of this Part of EN 599, the definitions
given in EN 599-1 apply.
4 Classification
4.1 General
Wood preservative products shall be classified
according to their performance capabilities where
tested in accordance with EN 599-1 and not according
to their physical or chemical form and composition.
The classification shall be defined in terms of the
following:
± minimum biological efficacy according to the
hazard class;
± features of the application procedures;
± additional biological efficacy;
± critical value(s).
NOTE. An example of a system for describing the classification of
the wood preservative product is given in annex A.
4.2 Hazard class
The wood preservative product shall be classified as
being suitable for a particular hazard class in
accordance with its performance where tested in
accordance with EN 599-1.
Products appropriate for use in more than one hazard
class shall be classified and labelled by the number of
each hazard class to which they conform.
4.3 Application features
4.3.1 Application processes
The wood preservative product shall be classified as
being suitable for either superficial application
processes, or penetrating treatment processes, or both
types of process, providing that the specifications given
in EN 599-1 are complied with.

NOTE. Wood preservative products are formulated to suit a range
of specific methods of application from simple superficial
processes to more technically complex, industrialized processes.
The effectiveness of a product can depend critically on the way it
is applied (see annex C of EN 599-1 : 1995).
4.3.2 Use of coatings
The wood preservative product shall be classified to
indicate whether it is to be used only where protected
from direct wetting under a paint or other coating
which is applied before the treated wood is put into
use.

4.3.3 Type of wood
The wood preservative product shall be classified to
indicate its suitability for softwoods, for hardwoods or
for both.
4.4 Additional biological efficacy
The wood preservative product shall be classified to
indicate any additional performance capabilities
required to conform to local conditions, the
requirements of specifiers, or the claims of
manufacturers (see annex F of EN 599-1 : 1995).
4.5 Critical value(s)
The wood preservative product shall be classified to
indicate its critical value for each hazard class,
application process and wood type for which relevant
tests have been conducted and biological reference
values established.
5 Information to be supplied by the
manufacturer
The manufacturer shall make available at least the
following information :
a) a unique name and/or code number for the
product;
b) the active ingredient(s) and their quantities or
proportions;
c) the method(s) for analysis of active ingredients in
the product in its ready to use form;
d) the method(s) for the determination of the
penetration and quantitative retention of the product
in the wood;
e) the critical value in grams per square metre or
kilograms per cubic metre.
NOTE.1. Additional information may be required by European or
national regulations.
NOTE.2. Certain physical and chemical properties of the wood
preservative product can affect its efficacy. Guidance on further
information which may be useful is given in annex B.

6 Marking
The container for the product shall be marked with or accompanied by the following information:

a) the product name :

b) the number of this European standard
c) the hazard class mark(s) appropriate to the
product
d) the process of application

e) whether the product is to be with a coating : suitable only with coating, or suitable without coating;
f) the type of wood to which the product is to be : hardwoods only, or to softwoods only, or both;

g) any additional biological efficacy : relevant combinations of the following:
± all beetle species;
± Anobium punctatum;
± Hylotrupes bajulus;
± Lyctus brunneus;
± termites;
± Coriolus versicolor;
± blue stain;
± field tested;
h) the critical value according to the hazard : in grams per square metre or in kilograms per cubic
class/application process/wood type metre;
i) the manufacturer's recommended application : in grams per square metre or in kilograms per cubic
rate or retention metre.
NOTE. An example of how this information may be presented is given in annex A and a recommended system of codes for classifying
the efficacy of wood preservative products is given in annex C.

Annex B (informative)
Guidance on physical and chemical properties
The effectiveness of wood preservative products in service and their suitability for particular service situations
depends upon many physical and chemical characteristics which are not within the scope of this standard.
In particular, specific wood preservative products often are suitable for use only in certain service situations.
Therefore they may conform to appropriate legislative requirements on fitness for purpose, only if they have an
appropriate combination of relevant characteristics, both as made-up fluids or in their form as supplied, as well
as once they have been applied to the wood. The characteristics may include one or more of the following:

± stability `in-can';
± corrosiveness of treatment solution;
± stability after freezing;
± stability in water;
± flash point;
± properties of treated wood:
e.g. ± corrosion of fixings and fittings;
± water repellency;
± paintability;
± gluability;
± mechanical properties;
± fire resistance.
NOTE. There are no European standard methods for determining such properties but information relevant to a
particular product and its intended hazard class of use is expected to be provided in manufacturers' Technical Data
Sheets.

The specifier should seek assurances from the manufacturer and/or supplier of the product as to its suitability in
respect of the additional physical and chemical properties which are relevant to its intended use within a given
hazard class. In particular if the product could be washed off treated wood by rainfall, a requirement should be
made to protect the treated wood against such a risk during transport and installation.
