1. Title of Project:

Outreach Program for Mission Tandarust Punjab Mobile Bus

2. Background of the proposed Project:

1
2.1 Mission Tandarust Punjab has been launched by the Department of
Science, Technology and Environment to motivate citizen to adopt healthy
life styles and ensure safe food & water, clean air and an improved living
environment.

2.2 The Mission envisages to ensure that citizen of the state are productive
and contribute to the states’ GDP. The focus areas of the Mission are:
 Clean Air and Water
 Waste Management for healthy living conditions
 Safe food and drugs and preventive health
 Active lifestyle, especially for youth
 Conservation agriculture and greening of environment

2.3 Although each of the above objectives are being implemented by a specific
department / organization in the government, the Mission recognizes that
most of these issues are cross sectoral and interdisciplinary.

2.4 The measures developed by the Mission to implement its objectives

include Public Awareness and Policy Advisory besides technological
interventions. Since Pushpa Gujral Science City (PGSC) is a specialized
organization set up by Govt. of Punjab for Communication on issues of
social and scientific importance, it is proposed that outreach activities be
taken up on a large scale in all rural and urban areas through PGSC.

2.5 For this, Tandarust Punjab Mobile Bus could be developed as unique
mobile communication facility with interactive exhibits and information
panels to educate and make rural population aware (on lines of Mobile
Science Exhibition already operational in the State) to strive towards a
healthy living environment, as well as, with focus on inculcating healthy
lifestyle in individuals.

The interactive exhibits and information panels will give the visitors an
opportunity to learn through the process of interaction and discovery. The
emphasis of the programme will be to develop an informed,
knowledgeable and healthy society.

2.6 The subject areas for exhibits and information panels intended to be
covered in the Mobile Exhibition will include mixture of clean Air, Clean
Water, Waste management, Safe Food & Drugs, Khedo Punjab, Green
Punjab & Conservation Agriculture.

3. Objectives:

 To improve the physical and mental health of the people by adopting

healthy lifestyles.
 To create awareness of clean drinking water and promote healthy
surroundings through waste management with peoples’ participation.

2
 To educate the public on air pollution and Climate Change and role of
individuals in its mitigation.
 To ensure timely medical intervention for health of human and cattle
population.
 To bring about the importance of consuming unadulterated food and
food products
 To ensure a good living environment

4. Target group(s) with location specific information:

Rural Population in 22 districts of Punjab.

5. Duration of the project: 3 years

6. Approach and Methodology

6.1 Mobile Tandarust Mission Bus will cater to the doorstep of people in rural
areas by covering all the 22 districts of the state and in urban & periurban
areas by covering all cities and towns (237) of the State.

6.2 The bus will tour throughout the year, covering a minimum of 150 sites
and educating 75000 people. It will generally remain at a site for 2 days.
It will be parked in the village school, gurudwara / temple or Panchayat
ghar and will be open to general public from 6.00 am to 9.00 am in the
morning and 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm in the evening. During the day, it will be
open to school students for 10.00 am to 12.00 noon. Each site will cover
500 people from neighboring mohallas.

6.3 Considering that there are 12,000 villages and 237 towns / cities in the
State approx. 100 such buses will be required as below:

i) In Rural Areas (Mini Bus), one bus will stop in one village for 2
days. Considering that there are 12,000 villages and the buses
operate for 300 days in a year, one (1) bus will cover 150
villages/sites in a year. Hence, 80 Buses will be required.

ii) In Urban Areas (Normal Bus), one bus will stop at 2-8 sites in an
urban / periurban area. Considering 5 sites /town on an average, if
1 bus stays for 2 days at a site and operates for 300 days per year,
8 buses will be required to cover 237 towns. Further, 2 buses could
be developed for demonstration purposes for placing at PGSC
campus, as well as, for participation in exhibitions. Hence, 10
normal Size buses would be required
6.4 A well-qualified team of one Project / Scientific Assistant and one
demonstrator and one motivational speaker-cum-fitness trainer will be
traveling with the bus to facilitate smooth implementation of the project.
The working hours of the team would be adjusted as per 6.2 above. The
team will not only explain exhibits but also give motivational and
awareness talks to the public / students.

3
6.5 The Tandarust Punjab Mobile Bus will be fitted with:

(i) Interactive models, touch screen kiosks, visual images, video clips &
information panels
(ii) Folding exhibition
(iii) Testing kits (do-it yourself kits) on water testing, food adulteration,
