4 Approach & Methodology

Brief methodology of the power system study addressing the various aspects of the studies
is detailed as under;

4.1 Data Collection, Data Validation & Power System Modelling

 Collection of relevant data of the 220/33kV GIS HVPNL Substation. The data
collection will be based on the requirement of studies.
 All data pertaining to power system elements will be collected in prescribed
data formats.
 The power system network will be modeled in “MiPower®” based on collected
data.

4.2 Load Flow Studies

 The study will bring out the real (MW) and reactive (MVAR) power flows and
bus voltage profiles and system losses.
 Load flow studies are conducted to determine the voltage profile in the plant
for minimum and maximum voltage conditions of the Grid to arrive at adequate
tap positions for the transformers, real and reactive power losses and to
determine the reactive power compensation requirements.

4.3 Short Circuit Study

 The study is simulated to determine the faults currents.

 Short circuit studies will help in determining the adequacy of the equipment
rating.
 Verification of the capability of the existing switchgears for breaking and making
the fault currents will be ascertained.

The following parameters shall be determined for each of the short circuit studies:

Phase fault currents

Phase to Phase fault currents
Double phase to earth fault currents
Single Phase to earth fault currents
Sequence impedance and X/R ratios etc.

4.4 Protection And Coordination Study

 Protection analysis and co-ordination study will be carried out for the electrical
power system.
 Protection studies will calculate and predict the protection system response
from the inception of each fault to the complete cessation of the fault current
including both relay and circuit breaker tripping.
 The relay co-ordination studies are conducted to determine and cross check the
existing relay settings and the type of relays.
 Review of unit protection / individual protection settings (Transformer, busbar).
 Sequence of powering up of substations in phases and any change in relay
coordination.
 The changes in the settings as required will be indicated by PRDC so that same
can be incorporated for better co-ordination protection.

4.5 Transient Voltage Surges Study

 To check the possibility of occurrence of overvoltages at the transformer

terminal due to the external disturbances/lightning surges and also to check the
adequacy and location of surge arresters, the following studies will be
conducted.
Temporary overvoltage study
Temporary overvoltages usually originate from switching or fault clearing
operations (e.g., load rejection, single-phase fault, fault on a high-resistance
grounded or ungrounded system) or from nonlinearities (ferroresonance
effects, harmonics), or both.

Switching overvoltage study

When a circuit is energized, re-energized or opened, transient overvoltages
termed as switching surges are generated due to associated traveling wave
phenomena. Such overvoltages can be designated by a peak magnitude and rise
time. The switching surges on HV system are most severe when an open-ended
line is re-energized rapidly. The presence of trapped charges on the line and the
application of step potential during rapid reclosing of the line can cause
switching overvoltages to rise to very high values.
Switching overvoltage studies are more important for range II (operating
voltage >245 kV) systems for selecting the class of surge arresters for protection
against overvoltages.

Lightning overvoltage study

The fast transients in power systems cover a frequency range from 10 kHz up to
1 MHz. One of the primary causes of such transients is the lightning stroke to
the transmission lines or on tower top and associated backflashovers. The
lightning overvoltages are caused by either shielding failures or backflashovers
of the tower insulation on the transmission lines. Direct strokes to the phase
conductors may also become a concern if the transmission line and/or
substation are not shielded due to relatively low lightning activity in the area.

Very Fast Transient Overvoltage Study

The generation and propagation of VFTO from their original location throughout
a GIS can produce internal and external overvoltages. The main concern is
internal overvoltages between the center conductor and the enclosure. The
disconnector in GIS is usually used for closing and breaking operations of off-
load bus. In this case a number of strikes and restrikes will occur due to slow
moving speed of disconnector contacts and poor arc quenching ability, which
results in high frequency oscillations and generate very fast transient
overvoltages which are electromagnetic in nature. The transient overvoltages
superimposed on the system voltage, defined as Very Fast Transient

Overvoltages (VFTO), may cause a concern to the equipment connected to gas

insulated systems, especially extra high voltage (EHV) range. Compact coaxial
geometry and smooth conductor profile of GIS help in generation and
propagation of very fast transients.

4.6 Review of DR Files

The review of provided DR files will be carried out. Detailed analysis is made based
on the data available from various disturbance recorders, sequence of events and by
use of simulation tools.
