The table is based upon a transmitter up-date rate at least twice as fast as the proportional, integral,
derivative (PID) controller algorithm execution rate.
* Faster update rate/response time transmitters may be required for certain applications such as
compressor antisurge control systems. Slow update rate/response time transmitters may degrade
control performance.
8. For absolute pressure instruments the measurement inaccuracy caused by the change in the
atmospheric pressure shall be completely compensated.
9. The measuring element shall withstand pressures corresponding to the pressure rating of the
instrument case without any damage or zero shift exceeding 1% of the measuring range.
10. The measuring element shall be appropriately flexible, tempered and stress-relieved to ensure

elements with barometric compensation, if alloy steel sensor is not available.
These exceptions shall be highlighted in the specification.
13. Case material shall be suitable for application in the refinery and made of at least stainless steel.
14. The seal material shall be able to endure the operational pressure and temperature even in the case
of the failure of the diaphragm or other pressure-tight components. The instrument shall be designed
to provide full protection for the operating personnel even in case of failures.
15. Pressure-tight components shall have confined seals (tongue and groove or ”O”-ring).
16. Range limits shall be smoothly adjustable in the full range and the adjusting device shall be lockable.
Instruments with facilities for wide range offset and range limit reduction, zero offset and suppression
are preferred.
17. Pressure transmitters – except for differential pressure transmitters used for level measurement –
shall provide increasing outputs at increasing inputs (i.e. shall be direct action).
18. Pressure measuring instruments shall have integral dial indicators ensuring good readability (see
MGS-S-REF-I-4). The integral indicator shall provide reading of the measured parameter in physical
value and indication of the unit of measure. In lack of integral indicator a local dial indicator shall be
installed in the close vicinity of the transmitter, if required.

6/11 Rev.: 1.00.00

SLOVNAFT a.s. MGS-S-REF-I-30.9.2
R&M Division

19. Transmitters and separately installed local indicators shall be fitted with mounting yokes.
20. In case a seal diaphragm is required, it shall be integrated with the instrument and calibrated
together with it. The bottom part shall be removable for cleaning.
21. Capillary lines shall be filled with neutral pressure transmitting fluid suitable for the process
temperature and the instrument shall be calibrated together with the sensor element. The capillary
shall be made of stainless steel tubing with flexible guard (corrugated metal tube or PVC jacket), its
length shall be the shortest possible but never more than 10 meters.
22. For pressure measurements DN25 size flanged process block valves of appropriate pressure rating
shall be installed and blanked off with counter-flanges suitable for installing1/2” NPT or 3/4” NPT
female or socket–weld connections, if not required otherwise in the specification.
23. Pressure measuring elements connected to the process shall have ½” NPT threads, possibly with
additional oval flanges, and flat surfaces required for mounting.
24. For the measurement of fluctuating pressures installation of pulsation dampers may be required
upstream of the sensor element. Pulsation dampers shall be adjustable from the outside.
25. Provisions shall be provided for the venting during operation as well as the zero setting of all
pressure instruments installed and for the connection of control devices without disconnecting valves
or piping by installing a second block valve or three-way block valve between the pressure tap and
the instrument. Venting shall be designed so that the protection of the operating personnel will be
ensured. Aggressive or toxic fluids shall be drained or vented in a closed system. Valves and pipes
with minimum ½” sizes hall be used for draining or venting.
26. ½” seamless steel pipe shall be used for hook-up lines.
27. If sensor elements with diaphragm seal are used, provisions shall be made for their cleaning.
28. Provisions shall be made for checking and adjusting pressure instruments and pressure switches at
site by means of reference standards without dismounting.
29. Provisions shall be made for the local zero setting and adjustment of pressure instruments.
30. The instruments shall have integral over-voltage protection.
31. The signal lines of pressure instruments shall conform to the general requirements on cables.

Junction box specification

1. General
This specification covers the basic requirements for junction boxes installed in the field.

1.1. Deviations
The Project Specification may include deviation or change from these specifications. Any deviations from
this specification and the project specifications are allowed by a written consent from MOL Group only.

2. Technical requirements
1. The field junction boxes are basically for connecting the individual cables of instrument elements and
actuators mounted in the field, with the multi core cables or field bus cables, providing the control
room connection. Generally, the use of junction boxes made of cast aluminium alloy or stainless steel
(according to the environmental conditions) are preferred.
2. Junction boxes may also be used in the following case:
 Connecting the extension cable of instrument elements and individual instrument cable
 Gathering signals from instrument elements located in the close vicinity of each other (e.g.
position limit switches) by a single cable
 Connecting cable of a special quality (e.g. fire resistant or extreme flexibility) with general-
purpose cable outside the location requiring the special requirements.
In these cases junction boxes made of plastic (e.g.: polycarbonate) can be accepted.
3. The junction box and components used in it (construction and colour of terminal strip and cable
glands etc.) must comply with the requirements set by the Hazardous area classifications of the area.
4. Only cables of the same signal level must be connected within a junction box. Deviation is allowed in
justified cases only.
5. The junction box must be made in a corrosion resistant design.
6. The junction box construction, material and surface protection must ensure the prevention of
electrostatic charge.
7. The junction box must be fitted with earthing studs both outside and inside (for a non-conductive box
a bulkhead earthing bolt must be used).
8. The junction box must be fitted with a tag plate made of stainless steel, which is at least 50 x 20 mm
in size and 1 to 2 mm thick. The tag must be made by engraving or steel stamping in a 5 mm
character size at least. (Self-adhesive tape, sticker, or manual marking such as alcohol felt tip pen
are not allowed.)
9. The junction boxes must have at least 20 % spare capacity (for connecting extra individual cables)
per signal type, evenly distributed along the plant area.
10. Glands for the connecting cables must be located preferably at the bottom (in no way at the top) of
the box.
11. In line with its cable volume the box must be fitted with holes in sufficient number and size at the
workshop. The holes not used must be sealed using a plug with a counter nut.
12. The box specification must give the external and below armour insulation diameter of the cables to
be used (when double compression type of glands are used).
13. For new installations for armouring cables - in case of junction boxes made of metal - the use of
double compression (earthing) type cable glands are preferred, which can ensure earthing the cable
armouring to the junction box housing, and grips the external sheath and the below armour
insulation of the cable. The explosion proof protection of the glands must meet the protection of the
junction box. The proper galvanic contact between the enclosure and the cable gland shall be
ensured by the use of serrated washer and back-nut.
14. In case of enclosures provided with removable gland plates, the gland plate shall have an earthing
stud which shall be connected to the enclosure’s inner earthing stud by an earthing wire of 4 mm2
cross section at least.
15. The junction box must have a common isolated busbar (sufficient in size to the planned quantity of
the cables) for connecting the shield drain wires of the cables, and a common safety earthing busbar
if required. The outer earthing stud of the junction box shall be connected to the safety earth system
on the shortest possible rout.
16. The junction box shall be equipped with screw connection, feed-through type terminal blocks (in a
configuration suitable for the applied cable construction) mounted on a standard mounting rail. The

SLOVNAFT a.s. MGS-S-REF-I-30.12.1
R&M Division

terminal blocks shall be numbered and their colour must be in accordance with the type of the
electric signal.
17. Linked terminal blocks with appropriate marking (e.g.: “Sh” /Shield/) can be applied instead of shield
busbar. (Links shall be the same make as the terminal blocks.)
18. All shield wires to be covered with insulating sleeves.
19. The junction box must have accessories necessary for its mounting in the field (mounting on a
support pipe, wall etc.).
20. Colour of junction boxes for Intrinsically safe (Ex i) signals shall be light blue (RAL 5015)
21. For preparing a junction box specification a sample is given on the following pages.

Instrument cable specification

1. General:
This specification covers the basic requirements for instrument cables.

1.1 Deviations

The Project Specification may include deviation or change from these specifications. Any deviations from
this specification and the project specifications are allowed by a written consent from MOL only.

1.2 Applicable standards and specifications

acc. to appendix MGS-S-REF-I-4_2 items: 121, 122, 123, 124, 126, 127, 147, 148, 241, 327

2. Technical requirements

1. The material of the external sheath must be moisture-retardant, oil resistant and wear resistant, and
must have retarded burning properties (flame retardant – acc. to relevant standard) in line with the
environmental requirements. For a polyethylene cable sheath the flame retardancy is a must.
2. The construction of the armouring shall be spiral wound single wire armouring (SWA), braided steel
wire armour (SWB), or an armouring of min 0.2 mm thick galvanised steel band double wound with
25 % overlap.
3. The screening must meet the following:
 must be metal wound and threaded lead, with a 25 % overlap
 screening must be in an electrical contact with the copper drain wire
 screening must be isolated on both the external and internal surface.
4. For cables with pairs, triples and quads the number of twists per meter shall be 15/meter minimum.
5. Thickness of radial wire insulation on intrinsically safe cables and other cables shall be min 0.2 mm
and 0.5 mm, respectively.
6. For intrinsically safe cables and other cables the insulation of each wire must resist min. 500 V and
min. 1000 V, respectively. The insulation resistance shall be min 60 M Ohm/km.
7. The required minimum operating temperature range shall be between –30 and +70 C.
8. The required minimum cable laying temperature range shall be between 0 and +50 C.
9. The cable must resist the voltage test of the following actual values:
 between connected armouring and screenings, and between all wires connected:
 for intrinsically safe cable 500 V
 for other cable 1000 V
 between core bundle made by connecting half of the wires, and core bundle made by
connecting the other half of the cores
 for intrinsically safe cable 1000 V
 for other cables 1500 V
10. The self inductivity value shall be approximately 0.4 mH/km for cables of 1 mm2 cross section.
11. Identification of cable cores shall be with colours and numbering. For cable construction of pairs,
triples or quads the number of the pairs etc. must be placed at least on the core of the same colour
in the pair etc.
12. Additional major specifications are covered in detail below, or on the data sheets.
13. Armoured self-extinguishing, flame-retardant cables (conforming to IEC Standards 60332-1 & 60332-
3-22) or, if necessary, fire-resistant cables (conforming to IEC Standards 60331-11 & 60331-21) with
PVC jackets shall be used outdoors

SLOVNAFT a.s. MGS-S-REF-I-30.12.2
R&M Division

14. For individual instrumentation signal cable the use of stranded core (7 wires 1.5 mm2, or 0.8 mm2 for
more pairs), twisted pair (min 15 twists/meter), screened (spiral wounded with aluminium foil, with
tinned copper drain wire) cables is required.
15. For multicore instrumentation cable the use of stranded core (7 wires min 0.8 mm2), twisted pair (min
15 twists/meter), at least commonly screened (spiral wounded with aluminium foil with tinned copper
drain wire) cables with numbered wires is required.
16. For power supply and control, and atmosphere gas pollution detection cables the use of cable with at
least three solid cores (min 1.5 mm2 cross section) is required.
17. For cabling resistance thermometers the use of solid core (min 1.0 mm2 cross section) twisted pair
or in special cases twisted triple (min 15 twists/meter), screened (spiral wound with aluminium foil,
with tinned copper drain wire) cables is required.
18. For signal cabling of thermocouples the use of solid core (1.3 mm2, or for more pairs 0.8 mm2) cross
section), twisted pair (min 15 twists/meter), screened by pairs (spiral wound with aluminium foil, with
tinned copper drain wire) compensation cables is required. The material of the main core and the
colour of its insulation and the insulation for the external insulation must comply with the relevant
standards. Multi core cable must have a common screening.
19. In general the external insulation of the cables is PVC, and their temperature limit is 70 C. In case of
the ambient temperature is high, and the cable temperature exceeds 70 C, a high temperature
silicone cable must be used. The silicone cable may be changed to normal cable outside the high
temperature zone by installing a junction box.

3. Delivery conditions

1. The cables must be delivered wound up in a perfect condition on wooden drums. All drums must
contain specific lengths of cable as specifically indicated on attached data sheet.
2. Every drum must have the same type of cables wound on them. Each type of cable must be provided
with the following information by the supplier:
 cable structure
 outer diameter
 diameter above armouring
 armour thickness
 cable weight (kg/km)
 actual resistance at 20 C and 60 C
 allowed constant current density at 20 C in case of underground installation
 max manufacturing length
 min bending radius
 allowable strain
 amount of cable to be wound on a cable drum
 ambient temperature permitted at laying.
All types of cables must be supplied with a certificate.

4. Minimum scope of a bid

1. The bidder must provide as minimum the following information in the bid if it cannot be identified from
the data sheet attached:
 cable structure
 outer diameter
 diameter above armouring
 armour thickness
 max manufacturing length
 maximum amount of cable to be wound on a drum
 ambient temperature permitted at laying.

5. Marking on cable drums

1. On cable drums the following information must be marked:
 INSTRUMENTATION

Rev:. 1.00.00 5/8

SLOVNAFT a.s. MGS-S-REF-I-30.12.2
R&M Division

 purchase reference, order number

 cable type and structure
 cable mark with the relevant lengths
 total weight of full drum.

6. Examination
1. For making destructive tests, supplier is obliged to provide the extra length necessary for the test in
addition to the ordered length.
2. All tests that demonstrate whether the cable meets the specifications, or any relevant standard must
be performed by the cable supplier, and the test results must be submitted on certificates.
3. For preparing the instrument cable specification a sample is provided on the pages below.
