Activities

Activity Activity Description (Teacher: T, Students: Sts, Student: St)

➢ Sts come to their English class. T asks her sts how they are.
T: I am really fine because I start to go jogging. Did I say it
before? I always get up early and I often go jogging with my
brother in Seğmenler. I really like to go jogging in the fresh air
because I think it takes away all my stress. Also, I start to play a
Warm-Up computer game in my free time but it’s just a free time activity /
Activity a leisure time activity for me. Do you know what is free time or
(10 minutes) leisure time? It’s a time that you don’t have any work or
responsibility. You’re free at this time. So, do you have any free
time activities?
S: I listen to music. / I play computer games...
T: Very good! Now, I will distribute a paper to you. In this
paper, you can see some free-time activities with pictures. I
want you to look at them, and put a tick for your free time
activities.
(After sts finish it, T gets answers from some sts).

2
➢ T distributes a paper which includes a table about which
activities are better on our own, which activities are better with
our friends.
T: Now, I want you to think about these activities. It’s good to do some
things on your own, but some things are better with our friends. For
instance, I listen to music on my own but I love to dance with my
friends. Like this, I want you to complete this table on your own, think
about which activities are better on your own, which activities are
better with your friends. Write at least 3 activities.
➢ After sts finish the table, T gets answers from some of the sts.
S: I listen to music on my own.
Introduction T: How often do you listen to music?
(15 minutes) S:...
T: When we talk about our free-time activities, we can use
some adverbs such as always, often, sometimes, and never (T
draws a simple chart that includes percentages of these
frequency adverbs and wants sts to put these frequency adverbs
in an order. Then, T asks how often they do these activities to
some sts again).
T: Now, change your papers with your peers. Look at your friend’s
answers and ask him/her how often your friend does these activities.
For example, my peer is Yeşim, and this is Yeşim’s paper. (T opens her
peer’s table via PPT). I look at Yeşim’s paper and I ask her how often
she does this activity. Then, I say “Yeşim sometimes goes shopping
with her friends.” Now, talk with your friends about their free-time
activities.
➢ After T gives a few minutes to sts to look at their peers’ papers
and talk to each other about their free-time activities, T gets
answers from some sts. For instance:
T: How often Oğulcan does listen to music in his free time?
Her peer: He sometimes listens to music in his free time.

T: Now, we have a reading about Beste and Mike’s free-time activities

3
but they are really different from each other. Look at the board, these
are Beste and Mike’s personal characteristics. Think about their
characteristics and before reading the paragraphs, I want you to guess
about these people’s free-time activities. What do you think s/he can do
in his/her free time? After we read the texts, we will look at your
guesses.
➢ T opens PPT that includes Beste and Mike’s personal
characteristics.
○ Beste is a social girl. She likes spending her money. She
is friendly and she has many friends. She loves having
fun. She doesn’t like spending her weekend at home.
Main Activity She is very healthy and fit.
(30 minutes) ○ Mike is an unsocial boy. He does not like to spend his
time outside, but he likes to spend his time at home. He
loves technology.
➢ T gets some guesses from sts and notes them on the board.
T: Now, read the texts and you have 6 minutes. (T distributes the
reading texts about the free-time activities of Beste and Mike.) After
reading the texts:
T: Let’s check your guesses. You said that s/he plays computer
games/goes shopping/… . Is that correct?
S: Yes, s/he plays computer games/ goes shopping/….. (T puts a tick
for each correct guess).
T: Now, read the text again and answer the true-false questions. Mark
the sentences T (true) and F (false) according to the text. Correct the
false statements. (T distributes the paper including questions).
After sts complete the true-false questions,
T: Let’s look at the answers. Is there any volunteer for the first/ second/
third …. question? (If there is not any volunteer, T chooses a student
from the students’ list.)

4
T: Now, you will work with your peers. You stand up and make 2 lines.
Then, I divide these 2 lines into 2 groups. One group is in front of the
board. The other group is in the back of the class. In the lines, the
person that opposite you is your peer. I show you a picture from
smartboard. You say the activity’s name in the picture as a whole class.
Then, ask your peer the questions on the smartboard about the activity.
First, you ask your peer and then, your peer asks you. When I clap my
hand, you should stop. After you stop talking, a person from a line goes
back of his/her line, so your peer changes for the next picture. Then, I
show you another picture and it goes on like that. Don’t talk loudly and
don’t disturb other peers because the peers should hear each other.
Follow-up The sts ask the following questions to their peers according to the
Activity activities in the pictures :
(25 minutes) ● How often do you go shopping/ play basketball …?
● Where do you go shopping/play basketball …?
● Who do you go shopping/ play basketball … with?
T gives an example: “I see to “go shopping” in the picture. I ask my
peer “how often do you go shopping”. My peer says “I often go
shopping”. I ask my peer “where do you go shopping”. My peer says
“I go shopping at Kentpark”. I ask my peer “Who do you go shopping
with”. My peer says “I go shopping with my family”. Then, my peer
asks me these questions.

➢ Assessment: T assesses her/his sts’ success according to their

developmental process in the activities. Also, T assesses sts
whether they do their homework or not. In general, exams will
be conducted comprising the necessary topics covered.
Assessment & ➢ Homework: (T shows the homework and its example via PPT.)
Homework T: Choose one person from your family. Ask him/her:
● What are your free-time activities?
● How often do you do these activities?
Then, make a mini-poster about his/her free-time activities. You
can draw pictures and you can use colorful papers. Do your
