Introduction:
The Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre (DICEC) is the region's most modern, purpose-
built exhibition Centre. It is centrally located in the heart of Dubai's business district and only 20 minutes
from Dubai International Airport. The venue has all facilities expected of an international exhibition Centre
including meeting points, VIP lounges, Internet and business Centre facilities, hotels and restaurants, all
providing the ideal environment to conduct business.

The original Dubai International Exhibition and Convention Centre was built in 1979 by the late H.H. Sheikh
Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai.
The complex comprises:

 The DICC can accommodate over 4500 delegates in its multipurpose hall.
 The DICC has 35,000 sqm of adjoining exhibition space.

 The venue is large enough to accommodate events of up to 15,000 delegates. Its main hall named
after the late His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, has the capacity to hold 600 to
6,000 delegates. When set as an auditorium it can comfortably accommodate 4,500 delegates.
 Next to the Sheikh Rashid Hall is the Sheikh Maktoum Hall, which offers a 3,835 square meter area
of space. This area can be partitioned into four rooms, each accommodating between 600 and
750 delegates, theatre style.
 In addition to the two primary conference halls, there are a further 20 breakout rooms.
 In total the DICEC is able to offer over 46,000 square meters of pillar-free space over nine
exhibition halls.
 The exhibition halls have varying ceiling heights between seven and ten meters.
 The DICEC will have its own dedicated metro station from 2009, providing easy, swift access for
all delegates.
 The DICEC currently has two hotels on site – the ibis and the Novotel – offering 622 three and four
star rooms.
 Three additional hotels are planned and will open in 2010. There are over 3,000 rooms within a
two kilometer radius, with even more planned for the future.
Facilities for Delegates:
 Catering Outlets: Six restaurants, two coffee shops and four snack bars are spread over the
complex.
 Car Parking Space for more than 3,000 vehicles.
 Conveniences of 3 ATMs, post office, car hire, travel agent and shops are located on site for
delegate use.
 Business Centre: Located in the main concourse. Open daily offering private meeting room
facilities, secretarial services, photocopying, printing, faxing, laminating, binding, stationery,
electrical accessories, courier services and mobile phone rental.
 Telecommunications: Local, national and international telephone and facsimile connections are
provided through a highly sophisticated PABX system.
 Special requirements such as DEL, point of sale, internet access, leased lines and ISDN can also be
met.
 24 Hour Services: Housekeeping, engineering for technical requirements and security services are
available round-the-clock.
 Exhibition Stand Fitting: An on-site stand fitting company provides electrical services, display
material, carpets, furniture and stand building services.
 Conference Production: A selection of production houses, familiar with our working practices and
capable of producing tailored events are also on call.
 Al Wasl Press Conference Centre A fully equipped, 50-seat high specification Centre with state-of-
the-art conferencing equipment to ensure your seminar or press conference is a success.
 Food and Beverage Services
 With a cutting edge kitchen capable of meeting the demands of major conventions, the Food and
Beverage Department at DWTC offers a wide range of options for discerning clients.
 In addition to managing three food and beverage outlets housed at the DWTC complex, the Food
and Beverage Department provide external catering for a variety of functions.

 Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), Qatar

Overview and Location:

The Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) is located in Gharafat al Rayyan, on the Dukhan Highway
in Doha, Qatar. The convention centre is a member of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and
Community Development and is situated on Qatar Foundation’s 2,500-acre campus alongside the Sidra
Medical and Research Center, Qatar Science & Technology Park, Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar,
Texas a&M, and Georgetown University, among others.
Introduction:
The Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) will be a new landmark building and the largest of its kind
in the Middle East when opened in 2011. The convention centre is being built in Doha as part of the Qatar
Foundation Education City. Qatar Foundation is a non-profit organisation founded by Emir of the State of
Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani in 1995. The 14km² Educational City will have about 30
institutions including six American University branches, schools, and medical and research centres.

Conceptual design of the QNCC was provided by Yamasaki Architects and RHWL, based on a design
conceived by Arata Isozaki. The convention centre will have advanced solutions and form a benchmark in
international venue design. Apart from exhibitions and conferences, the convention centre will host local
and international music and arts festivals, and international events such as boat and motor shows.

Design on the QNCC started in 2006 and was completed in the first quarter of 2009. The 177,000m²
convention centre development is estimated to cost $1.2bn upon completion.

Qatar National Convention Centre design:

The convention centre will be a six-storey structure with a basement measuring about 250m long and
110m wide. The iconic design of the building will be a huge organic structure resembling two intertwined
trees in the main façade. It represents Sidra Tree, a beloved and multifaceted icon in Qatari culture and
the emblem of the Qatar Foundation. The tree is a beacon of learning and comfort in the desert, a shady
haven for poets and scholars who gather beneath its branches to share knowledge.

The tree structure will act as the main entrance and also support the external canopy of the building.

Structure/construction:

The building structure was constructed upside down from roof deck to the foundations using Macalloy
bars to reduce costs. The 250m-long organic Sidra Tree metal structures were fabricated in Malaysia and
shipped for assembly to Doha. The concrete roof deck of the building will be a 40m-long and 30m-wide
structure supported by the tree structures.

The steel tree structures grow from two concrete bases along the façade and divide into four branches.
They are made with structural core of octagonal tubes. The iconic Sidra Tree branch façade will change its
colour daily due to six undercoats.
Qatar National Convention Centre facilities:
The National Convention Centre will have 40,000m² of exhibition space, which can be partitioned into
nine halls and 10,000 seats, a 2,300-seat theatre and a 4,000-seat conference hall. It will have three tiered
auditoriums with a total of ten conference and performance venues and 57 meeting rooms. The Centre
will have exhibition foyers, VIP lounges, hospitality suites, registration desks, and business Centre and
media rooms to support 7,000 delegates. The other features include five-star international in-house
catering facilities and undercover multi-level parking spaces for 3,200 cars, 43 coaches and 59 taxis.

The technical features of QNCC include wireless conference management system, color LED lighting in the
exhibition halls, fiber optic connections, LCD screens in the meeting rooms, 35,000m² of mobile rigging
grids, Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) systems for tracking of building assets and delegates,
and IP telephony and television.

Materials:
The convention Centre will have a built-up area of 150,000m² using about 60,000m² reinforced concrete
and 90,000m² of structural steel. The interior wall finishes of the QNCC will be installed with Italian marble.
The meeting rooms will be furnished with ilboca teak and foyers will be timber paneled. The auditoriums
will have Italian leather seating. The theatres will be designed with leather mosaic feature walls. Glass
façade will be clad the building.

Sustainability:
The Qatar Convention Centre will have solar panels installed on the 3,700m² roof area, which will
contribute 12.5% of the building's total electrical consumption.

The other resource-saving features will include water-efficient fixtures, occupancy sensors, carbon dioxide
monitors, and LED lighting and sustainable air-volume systems.

The structure is being built to the standards of the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and
Environment Design (LEED) – the first of its type in the region – and is seeking a Gold Rating.

Designed by the renowned Japanese architect Arata Isozaki., the spectacular façade resembles two
intertwined trees reaching up to support the exterior canopy. The tree is a beacon of learning and
comfort in the desert and a haven for poets and scholars who gathered beneath its branches to share
knowledge.
QNCC was conceived with a focus on sustainability. The Centre was successfully built according
to U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) gold
certification standards. The building is designed to operate efficiently with innovations such as
water conservation and energy-efficient fixtures.
A member of the Qatar Foundation, QNCC features a conference hall of 4,000-seat theatre style,
a 2,300-seat theatre, three auditoria and a total of 52 flexible meetings rooms to accommodate a
wide range of events. It also houses 40,000 square metres of exhibition space over nine halls, and
is adaptable to seat 10,000 for a conference or banquet. The Centre’s stunning architecture and
cutting edge facilities are ideal for hosting local, regional and international conventions and
exhibitions, gala events, theatrical productions and banquet functions.
