Journal Definition

A journal is a scholarly publication containing articles written by researchers, professors and other
experts. Journals focus on a specific discipline or field of study. Unlike newspapers and
magazines, journals are intended for an academic or technical audience, not general readers.

Purpose of Research Journal

The function of a research journal is to present new research, which is especially important in medicine
and other scientific areas. In the social sciences, the research journal often serves as a means of
examining different methods and approaches to research.
What is Research & its Importance?
The main purpose of research is to explore something new, to put light on the hidden facts, to prove a
theory, and contribute to developing knowledge in a field of study. A tool for building knowledge and
for facilitating learning.
Research Journal Articles
Journal articles are shorter than books and written about very specific topics. A journal is a collection
of articles (like a magazine) that is published regularly throughout the year. Journals present the most
recent research, and journal articles are written by experts, for experts.
Academic Journal
Academic journal serves as permanent and transparent forums for the presentation, scrutiny, and
discussion of research. They are usually peer-reviewed or refereed. Content typically takes the form
of articles presenting original research, review articles, and book reviews.
Journal Article
Peer-reviewed journals-articles are written by experts and are reviewed by several other experts in the
field before the article is published in the journal in order to ensure the articles quality.
Look for clues that tell you the article is published inside of an academic/scholarly journal: Go to the
website or description and read the "About" or "Aims and Scope" sections.
Difference B/W Article and Paper
There is no difference between a research articles and a research paper and both involves original
research with findings. Research articles are published in renowned scientific journals whereas papers
written by students do not go to journals.

HEC has been endeavoring to raise the quality of research in Pakistan to an international level.
Research journals are the excellent tool to enhance research capabilities. As such it has been decided
to approve those research journals which meet the HEC criteria for recognized journals. Different lists
have been approved for different purposes and different time frames and are applicable only within the
given frame work. There are two main classes;
Sciences / Applied Sciences Journals:

 Engineering & Technology

 Health Sciences
 Natural Sciences
 Multi -Disciplinary
 Agriculture

Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities, Business Education Journals:

 Social Sciences Combined List of Recognized Journals

Note: The Journals of Statistics Disciplines were shifted to HEC Recognized Journals in Sciences from
20-02-2015. Before this date these were considered in HEC Recognized Journals in Social Sciences.

The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) being responsible for overseeing, regulating
and accrediting the higher education efforts in Pakistan, has been endeavoring to raise the quality of
research according to international level. Academic research journals are the excellent tools to enhance
research capabilities. They serve as forums to present latest research and also for appraisal of existing

research in the relevant fields. The HEC has set a mechanism to recognize research journals in different
categories such as“ W“ ,”X“ ,”Y ”and“ Z ”as per fulfillment of the criterion.

CRITERIA FOR HEC RECOGNIZED JOURNALS

1. The journals should be regularly published

The old journals published regularly should meet the following criteria in order to prove the regularity.

1 Annual publication It should have published 5 issues in the last 5 years

2 Six monthly publication It should have published 6 issues in the last 3 years
3 Quarterly publication It should have published 8 issues in the last 2 years
4 Monthly publication It should have published 24 issues in the last 2 years

The new journals published regularly should meet the following criteria in order to prove the regularity.

1 Annual publication It should have published 2 issues in the last 2 years

2 Six monthly publication It should have published 4 issues in the last 2 years
3 Quarterly publication It should have published 8 issues in the last 2 years
4 Monthly publication It should have published 12 issues in the last one years

The universities /organizations interested to have their journals recognized by HEC must send the
copies of the issue mentioned in the last columns of the above table to HEC library on gratis. In case
a journal started publishing recently it should have completed at least two years publication to meet
the criteria.

2. The journals should have diverse editorial board/ advisory board.

The credentials of the board members should be taken into consideration.

Fifty percent of the board members should be from the outside.

3. It should be’ peer reviewed”.

The policy of blind review should be followed.

Peer reviewed at least by two reviewers (including one international reviewed [i.e. from
industrially/academically advanced country in the respective discipline)

4. It should be abstracted / indexed internationally.

5. The journal published in any language other than English should publish abstract of each paper
in English.

6. Reference should be provided according to the international standard as per policy of the journal.

The meeting phrased the following definition of the HEC recognized journal / journal of international
repute.

MECHANISM FOR CLASSIFICATION OF HEC RECOGNIZED JOURNALS

All science journals to be classified as W, X, Y, Z

W Category; journals listed in journal citation report (JCR) of ISI impact factor.

X Category; experts groups certify they are top, recognized journals in the subject of archival quality.

Journals not having an impact factor

Verified by HEC that they meet all HEC journal criteria and have paper reviewed by at least
one expert from an industrially/academically advanced country in the respective discipline.

Y Category; expert groups certify that they are top, recognized journals in the subject of archival
quality.

Journals not having an impact factor

They meet all HEC journal criteria except review of each paper by at least one expert from an
industrially/academically advanced country in the respective discipline.

Z Category; experts groups certify that they are good, recognized journals in the subject of archival
quality.

Journals not having an impact factor

They meet all HEC journal criteria except review of each paper by at least one expert from an
industrially/academically advanced country in the respective discipline and not discipline and
not abstracted/indexed internationally by a recognized agency.

W Category; acceptable for tenure track system

X Category; acceptable for BPS appointments/promotions, HEC approved supervisors and

publication of research of PhD work until 30th June 2016. The candidates enrolled in PhD after January

10, 2010 are required to publish their research paper in HEC recognized W or X category journals for
award of PhD degree.

Y Category; acceptable for BPS appointments/promotions, HEC approved supervisors and

publication of research of PhD work until 30th June 2016. The candidates enrolled in PhD before
January 11, 2010 can publish their research paper in HEC recognized Y category journals for award
of PhD degree.

W, X, Y, Z eligible for HEC support grant for journals until 30th June, 2016

Academic and research journals serve as excellent tools to nourish, promote and enhance the
intellectual reasoning and research capabilities of individuals. They also provide a scholarly forum to
present the latest research as well as for appraisal of the existing research. As per the directives of the
Higher Education Commission almost all public as well as private sector universities and even some
private organizations of the country are engaged in publishing and editing the research journals as
HEC format in their relevant fields of studies.

Islamic and Religious Studies are no exception. Till date about fourty such research journals are being
published from different universities and organization countrywide. This assignment will list HEC
recognition and themes or specialized areas of research journals in Islamic Studies which were
recognized by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan till September 2019.

A committee formed by the Higher Education Commission has recommended that some journals may
be considered by the universities for the purposes of appointment and promotions, provided that they
have first been reviewed by committees of international experts from technologically advanced
countries (formed by the universities themselves) and certified to be “journals of international repute”.
The universities are therefore required to form such committees of international experts to review the
following list and those journals declared by the experts to be “journals of international repute” may
be accepted for purposes of appointments and promotions. In 2005 in a list of 181 journals there was
only one journal of Islamic studies. Which was named as;

Fikr-o-Nazar Islamic Research Institute, International Islamic University, Islamabad.

With the passage of time all the efforts made for the research development become fruitful. And now
within 10 years number of journals increased dramatically.
