III. PEM FUEL CELL SYSTEM FOR ELECTRIC BICYCLES

A realistic drive cycle for Stuttgart is obtained by using a
web software tool [21]. This web software tool is employed for Fig. 2. A driving cycle speed versus time
trip analysis of an electric bicycles trip. In this work, a GPS trip
in Stuttgart area on google maps shown in Fig. 1 is selected.
The GPS file is used to generate data such as speed, elevation
profile, input power, battery voltage etc. on the trip by using
the web-based trip simulator [21].

The simulation results of the web-based trip simulator have

been calculated with choice of a human power input of 80 W.
A driving cycle representing bicycle speed versus time is
shown in Fig. 2. The average speed the electric bicycle is 21.6
km/h and the electric bicycle takes 26:25 minute to cover an
average distance of 9.50 km. The battery of the electric bicycle
is rated is at 24 V, 12 Ah with a resistance of 0.05 ohm. The
input power of the bicycle is shown in Fig. 3. The power

IV. SIMULATION RESULTS
The modeling and simulation of the PEM fuel cell power
source has been verified for an electric bicycle using Matlab,
Simulink and Simscape Power Systems. The web-based trip
simulator is used to generate data such as speed, altitude
profile, input power, battery voltage, etc. on the trip [21]. A
human power input of 80 W is selected. The average speed the
electric bicycle is 21.6 km/h. A simulation time of 1585 s for
an average distance of 9.50 km., which is calculated by the
web-based trip simulator, is chosen to verify the PEM-FC
power source for electric bicycles using Matlab.

Figure 6 shows the variation of the power consumption of

the electric bicycle. The power fluctuates significantly between
0 W and 220 W. The output power of the PEM-FC is given in Fig. 7 The output power of PEM-FC.
Figure 7. The PEM-FC generates little more power from the
electricity consumption of the electric bicycle as seen clearly in
Figs.6 and 7. The input power of the bicycle calculated by the
web-based trip simulator is much closed to the output power of
the PEM-FC as observed clearly in Figs.7 and 3. The
demanding power of the electric bicycle varies considerably
under different riding conditions. The power consumption of
the electric bicycle varies considerably when traveling uphill or
downhill.

Fig. 8 illustrates the output voltage of the PEM-FC and it is

obvious that the fuel cell stack voltage alters meaningfully
under various riding conditions. Figure 9 shows the change of
the load voltage of the electric bicycle. The PEM-FC voltage
fluctuates between 25.2 V and 47.1 V. However, the control
system keeps the output voltage at 24±0.3 V. The output
voltage of the dc/dc converter can vary slightly, as the Fig. 8 The output voltage of PEM-FC
controller parameters are well chosen. According to Figs.6-8,
the PEM FC has responded very well to the changes in
electricity demand of the electric bicycle.

In this paper, a PEM fuel cell power source is proposed for
electric bicycles. The dynamic modeling and simulation of the
PEM-FC power source are verified using Matlab, Simulink and
Simscape Power Systems. The web-based trip simulator is
