Abstract:
This experiment includes two chemicals, contained in three beakers, which are
copper sulfate and sodium hydroxide. Copper sulfate is contained in beaker A and
sodium hydroxide is contained in beaker B and C. The chemicals from beaker A and B
need to be mixed, and the chemicals from beaker A and C are also need to be mixed.
After that, we observe the products from the reactants and found out that the product
from A+B is thinner and lighter than A+C.

Introduction:
The purpose of this lab report is to illustrate us to know about the difference of
the result when 2 different chemicals are mixing together which are Sodium Hydroxide
and copper sulfate. We also observe the formation of the Copper Sulfate hydroxide
precipitate. The precipitate will be done by separation using the filtration method and
the result will be collected and compared to the predicted value.

Objective:
To study chemical reaction and to determine the limiting reagent and % yield.
Materials:
Beakers Balance
Petri dish Cylinder
Clamp Copper sulfate
Glass funnels Water
Stirring rod Sodium hydroxide
Filtration papers Oven

Method:
1. mix solution A ( 2.5 g copper 5. Rinse with ethanol
sulfate in 50ml water) with 6. Put the filter paper on the petri
solution B (0.2 g sodium dish then put in the oven
hydroxide in 25ml water). 7. Weight mass of the product
2. Stir two to three minutes 8. Repeat again using solution A
3. Weight filter paper and record and solution C (0.6 g sodium
4. Rinse with 10ml water 2 times hydroxide in 25ml water)

Result:
A+B A+C

Discussion:
This lab gives us the different result of the filtrate when we combine 2 different
chemicals and filtration it which A+B give the color of the filtrate in light blue while A+C
give the color of the filtrate in dark green

Calculate for Limiting/ Excess Reagent:

CuSO4 . 5H 2 O + 2N aOH ⟶ Cu(OH)2 + N a2 SO4 + 5H 2 O
A+B
Convert from 1.25 g of CuSO 4 5H 2 O ⟶ ? g of Cu(OH)2
1 mol of CuSO4 5H 2 O = 249.685 g of CuSO4 5H 2 O
CuSO4 5H 2 O = 0.005 mol of CuSO4 5H 2 O
1 mol of Cu(OH)2 = 97.56 g
1 mol of Cu(OH)2
0.005 mol of CuSO4 5H 2 O × 1 mol of CuSO4 5H 2 O
= 0.005 mol of Cu(OH)2
97.56 g of Cu(OH)2
0.005 mol of Cu(OH)2 × 1 mol of Cu(OH)2
= 0.49 g of Cu(OH)2
A+C
Convert from 0.2 g of N aOH → ? g of Cu(OH)2
1 mol of N aOH = 39.997 g of N aOH
1 mol of N aOH
0.2 g of N aOH × 39.997 g of N aOH
= 5.00 mol of N aOH
1 mol of Cu(OH)2 = 97.56 g
1 mol of Cu(OH)2
5.00 mol of N aOH × 2 mol of N aOh
= 2.5 mol of Cu(OH)2
2.5 mol of Cu(OH)2 × 97.56 g of Cu(OH)2
1 mol of Cu(OH)2
= 243.9 g of Cu(OH)2

CuSO4 5H 2 O is the limiting reagent

N aOH is the excess reagent

Calculate for % yield

T heoretical Y ield × 100 → 0.49 g × 100 = 34.69 %

Conclusion:
It can be concluded that the weight of the product A+B is 0.17g and the weight of
the product A+C is 0.40 grams. In which the first product was less dense than the
second product.
