1
ELECTRIC LOCO TRAINING CENTRE.

The present edition of TROUBLESHOOTING Directory is prepared in such a way

to make it user-friendly and also to educate the user, on theoretical background of
problems and solutions. On opening the first page itself the user will know what to
refer, to overcome the problem encountered by him. To minimize the time to reach
relevant Chapter/page, the facility of Index Cutting is provided. The explanatory
notes along with the appropriate circuits are given on the left side of the
problems/failures discussed on the right side. This is done so as to educate the
Driver on the theoretical background of problems and solutions there off. Though,
the TROUBLESHOOTING DIRECTORY is referred by the LOCO PILOT
generally in case of failure only, the explanatory notes given can be gone through by
the driver in his spare time. Over a period of time, this will enable the LOCO
PILOT to become sufficiently familiar with the theoretical aspect of a failure,
making him competent to troubleshoot the failure without having to refer
TROUBLE SHOOTING DIRECTORY at the instant of the failure.

The air brake system is being introduced both in coaching and freight stock
on large scale. The problems/failures connected with air brake system are dealt with
exclusively and in detail. In addition to the TROUBLESHOOTING, this book
consists of Operating Instructions and Operation of Multiple Units,
problems/failures regarding air brake trains and other instructions.

We sincerely hope that the LOCO PILOTS community will make the best use of the
end product of the efforts put in by all of us.

STANDARD INSTRUCTIONS FOR LOCO PILOT AND LC.

1. During trouble shooting in block section, utmost care should be taken to trouble shoot
the fault, and resume traction within 20 minutes. If unsuccessful LC/TPC control is to
be informed, for assistance. All efforts should be made to minimize and curtail
detentions in block section.

2. In MU/Consist, if one of the loco fails, try to clear block section, with good loco or
good locos without wasting time for trouble shooting.

3. In case of trouble shooting in MU/Consist locos, the abnormal sign should always be
picked up from leading loco. There after all the observations and interventions shall be
made on the loco which is defective.

4. When ever HOBA is placed in OFF position during trouble shooting in one of the loco
in MU/Consist, HOBA of other locos also to be kept in OFF position.

5. While wedging contactors or relays ensure that the auxiliary contacts are fully operated
and contactors do not chatter after wedging.

6. LC should be informed at the normal stoppage regarding wedging of relays/

contactors.

a) FOR WEDGING CONTACTORS – Take Complete Safety measures.

If C105, C106 & C107 are wedged; Q118 is
to be manually operated for closing DJ.
After isolating any auxiliary motor through
rotating switch, ensure its corresponding
contactor is properly opened.
b) FOR WEDGING RELAYS - First switch off battery.
If relay Q118 is wedged – block section
may be cleared observing working of all
Auxiliaries.

7.a) During trouble shooting if MPH is isolated, the train can be worked up to the
destination provided MVRH is working normally and there is no appreciable rise in the
oil level in the transformer gauge.

The following current rating to be observed.

Starting: 920 amps for 10 minutes.

Continuous: 500 amps.

5
The loco should be withdrawn in a planned manner by the LC.

b) In case MVRH is isolated – Put HC105 on ‘0’,if HC105 is not provided Wedge Q118,
clear block section with the following current rating.
Starting: 920 amps for 10 minutes.
Continuous 500 amps.

c) In case MVSL is isolated – Clear block section with the current rating of 500 Amps.

8. During trouble shooting if HOBA/HQOP is kept OFF or HQOA is on 0, a frequent

watch should be kept for any smoke emission from power equipments i.e. RSI blocks,
TMs, BA panel and auxiliaries etc. as the case may be. LC should be informed before
starting the train. LC should withdraw the loco with HQOP/HOBA in off or HQOA on 0
in a planned manner and direct the loco to the nearest shed for attention.

9. Whenever any equipment (including TM)/relay are isolated on a locomotive, loco pilot
must record in the loco log book and inform LC at the first available opportunity.LC must
ensure planned withdrawal of the loco from service.

10. Driver must record all cases of on line loco troubles/other unusual occurrences/ wheel
slipping, clearly mentioning the time loss in block section/station, time and place of
occurrence as well as information given to LC.
11. Whenever HPAR is placed in “0” position during trouble shooting in one of the loco
in MU/Consist, HPAR of other locos also to be kept in “0” position.

12. Check availability/working of following safety equipments.

to avoid overload on ARNO.

3. If DJ trips then before closing DJ, bring MP to ‘0’,MPJ to ‘0’ and put HBA ‘OFF’
then energise the LOCO as per procedure, otherwise ICDJ will experienced.

When Q 118 Relay is wedged or HOBA is kept in OFF position:

1. Check the working of all auxiliaries frequently whose interlocks are provided in Q118
branches. i.e., MVRH, MVMT1, MVMT2, MPH, MVSL1, MVSL2.

2. If any auxiliary does not work (or smoke emission found), then open DJ and lower panto
immediately and take precautionary measures.

When Q 45 Relay is wedged:

1. Against regular practice on Neutral Section before arriving “close DJ” board do not close
BLDJ.
2. Frequently check the working of MVSI1, MVSI2.
3. Bring MP to ‘O’ and open DJ if found LOW/NO tension on line, so frequently watch ‘UA’
in driving desk.
4. Observe smoke emission from Q30 and RQ30
5. Observe OHE voltage on UA.
When No-tension on line remains for a long time, then remove the wedge of Q45 to avoid
chattering sound of Q44, Q118.
Precautions after wedging QSVM.
1. BLVMT should be switched on before closing DJ.
2. BLCP should be switched on after 5 seconds of SIV rams up full voltage. (SIV ON LED

TROUBLE SHOOTING

ICDJ:

1. Check Add. CCBA, CCBA, CCPT & CCCPU. If any fuse melts, renew the same. If again fuse
melts, keep HOBA in OFF and renew the fuse.

2. Ensure MR/RS pressure is above 8Kg/cm2.

3. Check safety relay target, if any relay energized, act according to TSD.

4. Ensure BA voltage is above 90 Volts.

5. Ensure GR on ‘0’

6. Try to close DJ with BP2DJ.

7. Keep HQOP 1 in OFF, HQOP 2 in OFF, and HOBA in OFF and try.

8. Try from rear cab.

9. Keep HBA on ‘0’, wait for 3 minutes and try to energise the locomotive.

10. In ARNO provided locos check C118 contactor closing or not.

TLTE:

1. If LSB glowing ensure J1, J2 and CTFs are in proper position.

2. Ensure SMGR pressure is between 2.5 to 3.5Kg/cm 2.

3. Ensure RGEB 2 COC is in open condition.

4. Try with EEC operation.

5. Try from rear cab.

6. Keep HOBA in OFF and try.

 Try to clear the section by manual operation of GR.At times, the fault diagnostic systems
are giving erratic information leading to wrong guidance since they are not stabilized fully.
Hence Loco Pilots should follow the normal procedure of troubleshooting.
