RECRUITMENT OF GENERAL WORKERS IN POLOKWANE MUNICIAPALITY

Polokwane Municipality advertised and filled positions of General Workers in order to

render much needed services to the community of Polokwane.

The municipality received a total of 7020 applications whereby 406 were shortlisted and
interviewed. 141 candidates were appointed in line with the Municipal Recruitment
process.

Initially our advert indicated 83 General Workers; and in the process, 58 more positions
of General Workers became vacant. In an effort speed up service delivery, the additional
vacant posts were incorporated in order to recruit a total of 141 General Workers.

As part of promoting sound labour relations and fairness in the recruitment process,
organized labour participated as observers.

However, the municipality has received standard letters from 31 applicants as well as
SANCO requesting information about the recruitment process in line with PAIA process.
Upon receipt of those letters, the municipality met with SANCO on Thursday, 02 January
2020, where it was agreed that a meeting will be held with the Executive Mayor on
Monday, 06th Jan 2020 at 14h00.

Today at about 08h30, a delegation of EFF Provincial leadership arrived at the municipality
requesting to meet with the Executive Mayor together with the Speaker and Chief Whip
to discuss allegations of nepotism, especially the fact that it is alleged that Councillors
participated during the interviews. In line with recruitment policy, councillors do not and
did not participate in the interview

Subsequently the Executive Mayor, Speaker and Chief Whip met with SANCO at 14h00
as initially agreed. The SANCO meeting could, however, not proceed due to internal
leadership disputes within SANCO.

As things stand now, the municipality has concluded the recruitment and appointment of
141 general workers and allocated them to various service units.

In light of the complaints received, the Executive Mayor will request the Office of the MEC
of Corporative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs Mr. Basikopo
Makamu to investigate the allegations and if possible release a preliminary report within
14 days.

Polokwane Municipality strives to promote fairness, transparency and equity in our

recruitment processes.

We take this opportunity to congratulate 77 women and 64 men who have joined the
municipality. Among those men and women, 56 are young people.

The municipality takes into account the challenges faced by young people in as far as
unemployment is concerned.
