REFLECTION PAPER: SPLIT

In our Philosophy class, we watched the film entitled “Split”. After seeing the movie
I have come up with reflections or realizations within the contents of the film. In today’s
generation, I would say that mental illness is one of the most rampant issues that we face
today in society, especially in teens/the youth. Having good/stable mental heath can help
us in socializing, connecting, and communicating with other people, In the movie the
main character has Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality Disorder), he has
several personalities each with different personas in various age and sex. In my
experience over the past 17 years that I have been living in this world is that people with
disabilities or disorders are treated like a weird foreign alien. They criticize them, make
fun of them and bully them to make themselves superior and make those people with
disabilities/disorders feel inferior or a freak.

I feel like the social issues that we face today has always had a stigma or a
stereotype that people believe in. With these stigmas and stereotypes, people isolate
those who are different than them into seclusion. Seeing how people interact with them
feels like it’s shameful to know that there are people like them in this world. They treat
them like some sort of superhuman with dangerous powers that could harm them. When
in reality, they are just like us normal and ordinary people trying to live life to the fullest.
Having mental illness is a struggle, because you feel like you’re different from everyone
else and that you’re just trying to fit in. But others don’t try to make you feel that you fit
in.

In the movie, having Dissociative Identity Disorder is portrayed that you are some
crazy lunatic, who has identity problems. It also seemed like they were just joking
around to find attention. It’s sad because some of the reasons why they turn out like that
is that they were abused at a young age that triggers the personalities or mental illness in
general. But in reality, they don’t have control over themselves. They are no in control of
what’s happening to them even to the point that they don’t know who they even are now.
As someone who has Anxiety herself, I know what it’s like to have mental illness. You
feel like you’re trapped inside a tight bubble and you can’t get out and there is no one to
help you. You feel like you are alone but you’re not. Anxiety and Dissociative
Personality Disorder may be two different cases of mental illness but they do have a
similar connection between them. That is to end the stigma against mental illness, for the
reason that they are just human like the rest of us.

I realized or reflected after watching the movie was that being kind is a way to show
people that they are not alone. Even just flashing a smile to someone could make them
feel better about themselves. Being friendly doesn’t cost much, because in the end you
get to connect with others and form a bond with them. We all should support and love
each other despite our own flaws because no one is perfect. I realized that even if I’m
going through this internal battle with myself, I have people that love me for who I am.

REFLECTION PAPER: LES MISERABLES

In our Philosophy class, we watched the film entitled “Les Miserables”. After seeing
the movie, I have come up with reflections or realizations within the contents of the film.
Back in the day, slavery was a very common issue in several countries. It was all about
how the rich was widening the gap between the poor, and making them feel inferior.
Since it was all about social status, if you had a title then you were somebody who was
highly regarded in society, and if you were poor then you were a nobody who people
didn’t care about in society. Even in today’s generation, hierarchy is till present in
society. People are very self-conscious about social status because they feel like if they
are popular then they will survive the social ladder. The ones who are on top looked
down in disgust to those who are at the bottom, and those who are at the bottom look up
to the ones on top with envy.

I feel like people judge others just based on where they stand on the social ladder
and what personalities they have. It also has certain stereotypes that people have, that
gives other people some sort of image to see them in. Like in the movie, when you are a
criminal and you have ended your imprisonment, people don’t give you a second chance
to start a new life. In that situation, it’s unfair because why would you deprive someone
of the chance to start a new life. In that time, the people suffered poverty all over, they
couldn’t even eat one meal a day, so they resulted to stealing food. The greediness of the
rich to stay rich is almost like a disgusting mindset that hurts other people. Also how
they don’t think that those who made mistakes can’t change for the better.

In the movie, the main character starts a new life after so many attempts. He made a
name for himself with his determination and hard-work. Working hard for your
dreams/goals is the most satisfying thing to have especially after you achieve them. It’s
almost like all the pain and suffering you went through was worth it. It’s also seen in the
film, how they were very loyal to the cause that they were fighting for. Their belief in
their stand of what’s right is astonishing because they fought for their lives just to
achieve equality, even though they did not succeed they still fought with pride and
bravery. Also God will always have a plan for you. God will always be there for you all
the time. Even if you are suffering right now or going through something and you feel
like God isn’t with you, He is with you and listening to all of your prayers, He just have
different plans for us in his world. Forgiveness is also important to be able to live your
life in peace and to have no worries of having enemies.

I realized or reflected after watching the movie is that we should make others feel
important and needed. Even just by acknowledging them or helping them in any way can
make them feel like they have a purpose in this world and life. Caring is not that hard to
do, because being caring to the people around you can make you feel like you have all
these people loving you wholeheartedly. I realized that status isn’t everything if you
don’t even have the ones you love around to watch you grow happily and healthy.

REFLECTION PAPER: PK

In our Introduction to World Religion class, we watched the film entitled

“PK”. After seeing the movie I have come up with reflections and realizations
within the contents of the film. In my time of being in this world, is that I
realized how important religion is on our daily lives. It’s one of the ways for the
people to have hope and trust in life. We have so many religions but the
common thing that we all believe is that there is a God or Gods for some, who
will always listen to our troubles and problems in life. It’s a way of finding the
right path in life and it is up to us on how to live our lives. I also realized is that
people judge others based on their religion. In society, we will always have
stereotypes in every situation and it messes up people’s mindsets in knowing
other people. Each religion has their own stereotype whether it would be by
physical appearance or personality and lifestyle.

I feel like people discriminate others because they might feel threatened
by those who could expose them or make them feel inferior. People nowadays
like to be in control of their own life and if they see someone who questions
their capabilities then they try everything to make them stop or keep them
silent. The ones who are in power use fear as an advantage to get the people
to support them because it is a way of threatening them in unfortunate
situations. In the movie, PK struggles to find his religion and God because
there are so many of them. There are also a lot of different traditions that
contradict with other religions. I think people take advantage of God and
religion, they create this somewhat false connection with religion and use that
as a means of taking advantage of people’s fear and hope for their own
personal gain.

I have also realized while watching the film is that family is very important.
It’s only normal for us as the children of our parents to make our parents
proud. They are our biggest supporters in life because they provide all our
needs and necessities to sustain us in our life. So when they get disappointed
at us, we feel ashamed then we do everything as much as we can to make
them happy, I am very much like that, I try very hard in satisfying my parents
in a proud way. So that they can say to others I am their daughter who
achieved a lot of things in life. However, there are times when choosing the
decision that your parents made between what you want to do is hard. The
reason is that parents know best when it comes to the betterment of their
child’s life, so their judgment clouds or covers our real passion. Also it’s not
good to lie because the truth will always set free. But sometimes lying can
keep someone away from the pain and truth which might seem cruel but
sometimes you just want to protect them from reality.

I realized or reflected after watching the movie is that our greed for
materialistic things can ruin you as a person who has morals. We just need to
believe in the God who has created us and not others. It also made me realize
is that I should be the friend who would always be there for others. Seeing my
loved ones happy is a gift for me for all eternity.
