To be an actor - creator
To test the plot
Element One
It does not start w a script. It started with an idea/concept/topic

Element Two
It’s a collaborative creation.

Element Three
No tradionally defined roles (director/writer = facilitator)

Element Four
The creators are often the performers
.

Element Five
The process of discovering the final product is as important as
the final product itself.
All these items make devising exciting and terrifying at the same time.
Collaborative creations sound great on paper, but there are issues.
The lack of leadership can make a piece muddy and ineffective.
Students often reject or shoot down ideas they feel are inferior –
this is deadly to the collaborative process. Sometimes students
or even us teachers get so wrapped up in the process,
that the final product ends up meaning more to the performers
than to an audience. And it’s much harder to start simply with an idea,
concept or inspiration point instead of a completed script.

CHANGE
“ The paradox, then, of devised theatre into the mainstream is
that the production is a mirroring of the kind of tunneling upwards
and play upon surface that our social fabric, as a whole, is
currently facing. Devised theatre is, therefore, both a
reinstatement of the underground, and an absolute embrace of
the surface. It is both surface and underground—it is the hyphen
between the two, the bridge. Or better yet, the “technology,” so to
speak, that allows surface to disappear. Art such as this is both
the mirage and sustenance; the ground we come up from under
in order to breathe and feed. Now you see it, now you don’t! ”
