This translation of the Day Hours from the Monastic
Breviary was undertaken several years ago with the intention
of providing a permanent Office Book for our Community
and with the hope that it might prove a worthy addition to
the list of Diurnals already published. In a work of this sort
there is no room for either eclecticism or originality. The
original text has been carefully followed, with only such
changes as were necessary to bring the Office into harmony
with the Kalendar of the American Church. In the choice of
English, the guiding principles have been as follows : ist. The
Psalter is taken from the Book of Common Prayer as pointed
in the St. Dunstan Psalter. 2nd. All other portions of Scrip
ture are in the English of the King James Version. 3rd. The
Collects, when not found in the Book of Common Prayer, have
been translated and revised after a comparison with transla
tions of the same in other Office Books.
The hymns, almost without exception, are from the
translations of the Reverend John Mason Neale, D.D.
The Antiphons and Responds, when not in the words of
Holy Scripture, are the work of the Reverend G. H. Palmer
and the Reverend C. W. Douglas.

is,
as whole, the first complete

fourteen hundred years, its use essentially unchanged, has spread among
an ever increasing circle of prayerful men and women. Previous to
the time of St. Benedict's Rule, probable that "the only public

or Vigil, Lauds said at daybreak, and Vespers, — then always said at

Terce, Sext, and None, they existed at all, did so as voluntary hours

of unprescribed prayer; not as definite Offices. Prime and Compline
were previously dormitory devotions, and became Choir Offices for the
first time in the Monastic Use of St. Benedict. Metrical Hymns, so
important feature of our present devotional life, were also for the first

it
interesting to note that all the older Hymns have remained unaltered
in the Monastic Office, as the Benedictines, with many other Religious,
refused to accept the unhappy perversions made under Pope Urban
VIII, and yet defacing the Roman Breviary. A strong movement for the
restoration of the unaltered Hymns exists in the Roman Church to-day,
and has already produced results in the completed portions of the
Vatican Edition. While some slight and unessential changes have been
made from time to time, and new Propers added with growth of the
Kalendar, the Monastic Office as whole remains today just what

those of the Holy Church throughout all the world.

DIGNITY OF PRINCIPAL FEASTS
GENERAL NOTES
Of Semi-doubles.
A Semi-double has its office entire, precisely like a Double, except
that the Antiphons are not doubled.
Of Vigils.
When a Vigil is kept upon its appointed day, the Office is wholly
of the Feria with the Collect of the Vigil. At Matins the Office is
entirely of the current Feria, but the Lessons of the Gospel of the
Vigil with the Respond of the current Feria are read. The Ferial
Preces are said, and the usual Commemorations. All else is as on
Ferias. Where a special Office is provided for a Vigil, as in the case
of Christmas Eve, etc., the Office is said as printed. When it can only
be commemorated, the Commemoration is to be made at Lauds only,
with the Antiphon upon Benedictus, the S. of the current Feria, and
the Collect of the Vigil. The Office of the Vigil begins at Matins
and ends at None.
GENERAL NOTES
Of Simples.
A Simple Feast begins at First Vespers and ends at None. At
Vespers the Ferial Psalms with their Antiphons are used. The Office
of the Feast begins at the Short Chapter, and continues as is set forth
either in the Proper or the Common of Saints. At Matins the Office
is of the Feast till the Hymn inclusive, after which are said the Psalms
and Antiphons of the Feria. Then the Office continues of the Feast.
The Ferial lesson is read where so appointed. The Sanday Psalms are
used at Lauds, and all else is as on a Semi-double. If a Simple Feast
occur during Advent or Lent, on an Ember Day, a Vigil, or a Rogation
Day, the Simple is only commemorated. The Ferial Preces are .aot-
said on Simples.
Of Commemorations.
Whenever both the Office of the Day and the Office to be com
memorated have the same Antiphon, Versicle, and Respond from the
Common of Saints, to avoid duplication, the Antiphon, Versicle, and
Respond for the Commemoration are taken from Lauds at First
Vespers, and from First Vespers at Lauds.
OF THE COLLECTS
The Collects have two endings: I. the Full ending, which is used
at Mass, and at Lauds and Vespers only, 2. the Short ending, which
is used at the other Hours.
If one Collect is said at Lauds or Vespers, it shall have its full
ending: if addressed to the Father: Through Jesus Christ, thy Son, our
Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy
Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen. Or, if addressed to
the Son : Who livest and reignest with the Father, in the unity of the
Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen. If the Son
has been named in the beginning of the Collect, the ending shall be as
that first given, only then shall be said : Through the same Jesus
Christ, etc. If the Son has been named at the end of the Collect, then
shall be said : Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the
Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen. If the Holy
Ghost has been mentioned, then there shall be said, the same Holy Ghost.
If many Collects are said, the first shall have its full ending as
given above; all the rest shall be said without ending, and without
Amen, except the last, which shall be ended in full.
At the end of the Litany, only the last Collect shall have its full
conclusion.
The short endings of the Collects are as follows : when the Collect
is addressed to the Father : Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
When addressed to the Son: Who livest and reignest God, world
without end. Amen. When the Son has been named in the course of
the Collect : Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. When the Son
is named at the end of the Collect: Who liveth and reigneth God,
world without end. Amen.
