CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

The usage of technology has been a prominent leader in our teaching strategies and

the peak of our education today. According to (Chigona, Chingona, & Kausa, 2010), ICT

in schools has been incorporated in all of our learning facilities. Projectors, televisions,

and video presentations have been widely used instead of the traditionally used manila

papers, chalk, and board. Technology has been widely accepted concerning the modern

age of our educations today. In that accordance, robot-based learning has been introduced

in the field of education, which includes electronic-mechanical IC like Rasberry Pi to

Arduino and robot learning robots such as Aldebaran and others.

In our vicinity, Robotics classes have been offered to STE strands in Bataan

National Highschool- Junior Highschool and other schools all around Bataan from public

high schools such as Orion National High School, Pablo Roman High School to private

schools like Letran, and Bataan Christian School. Robots, specifically EV3, are

implemented and can widely be used for robot-based learning. One article, Schools such

as Bataan National High School, have 8-10 EV3s that are working and can be modified

by the students taking such classes. With these many resources, students can interactively

learn about the program and at the same time, interact.

A robot is something we cannot define, it has great diversity in design, sizes,

capabilities, and many more, and that is more the reason why it is so hard to explain. The

1

presence of robots in school is becoming popular nowadays; it is because of the rapid

development of technology around the world, and the Philippines is not exempted.

Robots are here not just to promote education, but it can also reap huge benefits from

students who are actively engaging in these kinds of learning (Montemayor, 2018).

Robotics-based learning is now used in many schools, especially on higher grade

levels. Educational robotics has been recognized as a useful tool to teach the students

more comfortable. It provides user interaction with the students (Benitti, 2012). This type

of learning enhances and motivates students. It also improves the skills of the students

who participate in this type of knowledge.

The Lego Mindstorms EV3 is the third generation Lego Mindstorms product. An

EV3 is a robot that performs different tasks that corresponds to various programs that the

user needs to encode. The robot can do a lot of things. It can innovate our lives. It can

help our farmers and, especially, it can help the students in the field of Research and

different fields of study.

In the province of Bataan, Robotics has been introduced as a subject in Secondary

school. STE students were allowed to be well versed in programming. Robotics takes

technology-based education to a whole new level by creating the next step in teaching.

Introducing Robotics to schools means making skills and knowledge more hands-on and

fun. DepEd aims to prepare students for the future in a way that students can enjoy the

subject while being more creative and wouldn’t feel like homework. Other than having

fun, Robotics will be a beneficial tool that can help students in different disciplines.

2
BATAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

The gap between those researches is more focused on the educational plans of the

program they’ve launched (Alimis, et al., 2007). They assure us that when implementing

this robot-based learning to the students, especially in the curriculum in STE, can help

thinking creative ways to different things, and not on the field of Research itself. In this

vicinity, no one has ever talked about the outcome of the robot-based learning to the

students in this city, specifically BNHS-JHS, yet they are the first integrated this learning

program successfully.

The researchers intended to conduct a study about the correlation between the

LEGO MINDSTORM EV3 LEARNING PROGRAM to the Research Academic

Performance in STE students in BNHS-JHS. As they experienced through their past years

in Junior High School, students are being exposed to the nature of Research, yet Robotics

and Automated Parts are in a trend in that field. They are predicting that there is a

connection between the given learning program to the research performance of the

students.

As a response to this problem, the researchers conducted this study at Bataan

National High School – Junior High School Grades 8-10, to further study the connection

between the learning program and the academic research performance of the students.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The general problem of the study is How does EV3 based learning system affect

the students’ research academic performance?

Specifically, the study seeks to find answers to the following:

1. How will the respondents react to the based inquiry of this in terms of:

1.1 Grade level

1.2 Age

1.3 Gender

1.4 Proficiency to the robotics

2. What characteristics of EV3 based learning systems empowers junior high school

students and improves performance in research?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This present study will be undertaken to discover the effects of studying Ev3

based learning in Bataan National High School to the researcher’s performance in making

a study.

The results of this investigation could be highly beneficial to the following:

Students. One of the roles of the student is to thinking creatively on how to

help the society and the world with the field on Research that affect what they

think about the discipline. With this research, we can help the students understand

the psychological effects on thinking their research ideas when influenced by

robot-based learning.

Teachers. In a relationship such as student-teacher, as teaching this subject

that is recent and relevant, and needs further research, teachers create simple and

fun activities to the student in their discipline. With this research, not only

understand the results of the study, but also collaborate and create new right ideas

and plans to teach student further in robot-based learning

Mechatronic engineers. Mechatronics is a combination of Mechanical and

Electronics, 2 different disciplines that make most of the Automated Machines in

the World. With our study, Mechatronic Engineers can collaborate with the

teachers creating new learning modules to the students with these results, as well

as a mentorship to further help the students in their Research.

Filipinos. Giving a pride to our beloved country is our honor to do this

project. With this study, the results reflect the sides of a growing economy of our

country and these can help improving the education of our society.

Future researchers. This is giving an inspiration to the future researchers

whom give their time and effort in the field of Research. In this study,

furthermore error and recommendations can help future researchers improving

our study.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The coverage of this study is to focus on the psychological aspects of a student. It

is essential to understand this aspect because, in the field of robot-based learning, we

need to understand the student’s perspective with the track they like, specifically

Research. It is a simple way of knowing how students think about helping society

with technology.

The limitation of this study is first, the vicinity of the survey is at Bataan National

High School-Junior High School (BNHS-JHS), Grade8 -10. In recent years in BNHS-

JHS, the Department of Education implement robot-based learning to STE students in

grades 9-10. Others are putting a seminar for Grades 7-8, introducing all about

Research and robot-based learning to further immerse the student in Robotics.

Thinking this way can see the correlation or the evolution of the student from not

knowing Robotics, to a beginner in Programming and conceptualizing in robots that

can help our society, that there is really a connection between the two topics.

This researcher will conduct the study Bataan National High School-Senior High

School, November 2019 to March 2020. The study will approach in Phenomenology.

According to (Creswell, 1994), Phenomenology focuses on the experience of the

phenomenon, tackled within several respondents, describing the experience. The

collecting data we will use is the combination of interviews and observation at a

given time. Talking about robot-based learning takes some time to improve, does it

make some effort to see the results of the experience of the phenomenon. We will

conclude our study by summarizing what we get in the data.

DEFINITION OF TERMS:

Since research is new to some students, and so is robotics-based learning, here are

some information and definitions that will serve guide in this study:

 Robotics. Robotics is a branch of engineering that involves the

conceptualization, creation of design, manufacture, and operation of robots. This

discipline converges with electronics, computer science, artificial intelligence,

mechatronics, nanotechnology, and bioengineering (Rouse, 2015). Design, construction,

and use of machines (robots) to perform tasks done traditionally by human beings. They

are widely applied in such factories as automobile manufacture to perform simple

repetitive tasks, and in industries where work must be presented in environments harmful

to humans. Many aspects of robotics involve artificial intelligence(AI); robots may be

equipped with the equivalent of human senses such as vision, touch, and the ability to

sense temperature (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2018).

7
BATAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Senior High School

 Robot-based Learning. Known as “Educational Robotics,” teaches the

creation, analysis, application, and operation of robots. Robots include articulated robots,

mobile robots, or autonomous vehicles. It can be prepared from elementary school to

graduate programs. It may also be used to motivate and facilitate the instruction other,

often foundational, topics such as computer programming, artificial intelligence, or

engineering design. Other graduate schools focus on the programming part of the robot

itself, reporting of the introductory robotics, and stimulation of the application itself. It

deals with different kinds of programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, etc.

Manipulation of robots physical like Lego Mindstorm, iCreate, Scribbler, or stimulated

(Major, Kyriacou, & Berereton, 2011).

 Mechatronics. Use of robots as a useful learning tool that provides an

attractive teaching application. Robots are used to support various applications to

improve and increase motivation in classrooms. It could also capture the imagination of

young learners. It creates an interactive and engaging learning experience for the students

(Michigan Tech, 2019). Mechatronic Engineering is a combination of the fundamentals

of Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Science to develop autonomous systems. A

Mechatronic Engineer designs smart machines and systems that are aware of their

environment and can process information to make decisions and tasks within a particular

situation (University of New South Wales, 2019).

 Lego Mindstorm EV3. Third generation robotics kit

in Lego’s Mindstorms line created by LEGO INC. It is the successor to the second

generation Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 kit. In the acronym “EV3”, the “EV” designation

8
BATAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Senior High School

refers to the “evolution” of the Mindstorms product line. “3” refers to the fact that it is the

third generation of computer modules - first was the RCX, and the second is the NXT. It

is made by programmable bricks, motors, and sensor that is essential in educational

robotics (Guizzo & Cass, 2013).

 STE Program. Recently as STEM, in full science, technology,

engineering, and mathematics, field and curriculum centered on education in

the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF)previously used the acronym SMET when

referring to the career fields in those disciplines or a curriculum

that integrated knowledge and skills from those fields. Courses like medicine,

engineering, research are under STEM (Hallinen, 2019). The term “STEM education”

refers to teaching and learning in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and

mathematics, includes educational activities across all grade levels— from pre-school(K-

12) to post-doctorate—in both formal (e.g., classrooms) and informal (e.g., afterschool

programs) settings. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

Education: A Primer, 2012). This refers to the respondents that researchers will conduct

this research, providing that in this specific curriculum (Robot Curriculum) in the vicinity

of the study.

 STE Program – pertains to students of BNHS-JHS grades 8-10 as used in

our research paper.

Trends of Research

During the past 10 years, the trends in research have been ever-changing. As of now it is

not possible to set certain standards of metrics, indicators or evaluations methodologies

as research consists of a wide variety of contexts, culture and jurisdictions in their

application and is changing rapidly. According to Professor Ikeda, one of the largest gap

in the research community is the drive on the direction that the concern is going in.

Looking at the trends in the past decade robotics has been one of the leading trends along

with psychology, biology, history and political research papers.

In the last decade the robotics industry has created millions to billions of jobs led

by the electronics and electric vehicle industries. And by now, robotics will be an

industry worth billions of dollars. Along with the introduction of artificial intelligence,

robots will be able to perform complicated range of motions and different actions. The

applications of robotics will be applied to different industries and sectors. Some of the

predicted applications applied in different fields are healthcare robotics, medical and
