Cool Stop The Cool stop is a complete shutdown sequence and is used when the engine and
power turbine can tolerate exposure to the fault condition for a limited period of time,
and can still be handled safely - it requires knowledge of NL and NPT and control of
the VIGV, BOV and the lube oil system, as well as knowledge and control of all the
DLE parameters (air mass flow, combustor inlet temperature, fuel mass flow and
distribution, and gas exhaust temperature). The Coolstop sequence can be aborted if
the fault condition triggering the Coolstop has been cleared and an alarm reset is sent
to the ECS to clear the latch. A Coolstop appears when the ECS send a cool stop
command.

MUST – The requirement is mandatory and MUST be met to comply with a national
statutory instrument or regulation. A failure to comply renders the product unsaleable.

SHALL – The requirement is mandatory and SHALL be met to comply with a

customer, Rolls-Royce or de facto market standard requirement. A failure to comply is
unacceptable for product standardization, the business case or the market
expectation.

SHOULD – The requirement is not mandatory but SHOULD be met if at all possible.
A failure to comply is acceptable by agreement, if compliance would result in increased
cost/time for standardization or loss of market opportunities.

WILL – The requirement is not current but WILL become applicable in the future so it
should be met if at all possible. A failure to comply with a future requirement or
delayed introduction is acceptable by agreement if compliance would result in
increased cost/time for standardization against current requirements or loss of market
opportunities.

MAY – The requirement is an indication of a preference or wish but does not require
compliance. A failure to comply thus has no impact on product standardization.

sec Secondary (fuelling stage)
Secondary fuel injector This is a circular manifold fitted inside the annular secondary premix air duct, which
sprays gas fuel into secondary airflow so as to create a premixed air/fuel mixture that
will burn in the secondary zone. The injector has a single, circular slot in the inside
diameter of the manifold through which secondary gas fuel is injected into the
secondary premix air duct as a “film”. To promote the mixing of the fuel with the
premix air, the secondary injector is supported within the premix duct between two sets
of swirled vanes. These vanes at the entry to the premix duct act to create a turbulent
shear zone downstream of the injector that produce the required mixing.

Shutdown See CSD. The term shutdown refers to an Emergency Shutdown: when the fault
condition that occurs is not tolerable and when continued operation of the engine could

Torch igniter The torch ignitor is a mini combustor lit with a High Energy (HE) ignitor. The torch
flame lights the main combustor . The torch is a small combustion chamber mounted
on the head of each DLE combustor as part of the central fuel injector and is lit by two
HE spark igniters. The function of the torch is to light the primary zone of the
combustor during the engine start sequence.
