17.Schüler tuning ? …Schuler tuning is a modification to the electronic control
system used in inertial navigation systems that accounts for the curvature of the
Earth. An inertial navigation system, used in submarines, ships, aircraft, and other
vehicles to keep track of position, determines directions with respect to
three axes pointing "north", "east", and "down". To detect the vehicle's orientation,
the system contains an "inertial platform" mounted on gimbals,
with gyroscopes that keep it pointing in a fixed orientation in space. However, the
directions "north", "east" and "down" change as the vehicle moves on the curved
surface of the Earth. Schuler tuning describes the modifications necessary to an
inertial navigation system to keep the inertial platform always pointing "north",
"east" and "down", so it gives correct directions on Earth.

horizontal component of the magnetic field of the earth. As the north magnetic
pole is approached in the Arctic, the horizontal component becomes progressively
weaker until at some point the magnetic compass becomes useless as a
direction measuring device.

FUN -1 RKS
tabulated in the Nautical Almanac. To use you first find the LHA of Aries, select the
plate nearest your Latitude, align an arrow on the template with the LHA of Aries.
From the template you can then read off the approximate altitude and azimuth of
any selected star, or identify a star for which the altitude or azimuth is known.
28.Enumerate star calculation? How will you ascertain which stars are best for sight?
= To make a list of stars and planets available for observation at morning or
evening twilight for a fix, you would setup the star-finder with the LHA (Aries) and
have the planets plotted. Then use the following guide lines for selection of
bodies:Altitude 10° to 65°,1st magnitude Bearing 120° apart, Always try to get
Polaris, it gives you a latitude line of position if you are in the northern
hemisphere, and any body who has a bearing of 000° - 180° will do the same
thing. To check your course, select bodies with bearings perpendicular to your
course. To check your speed, select bodies that are parallel to your course. some
groups can be eliminated if one of the bodies in the group is below the horizon for
that observer's DR position and time of star time.

7. Definition of BUBBLE SEXTANT? = a sextant used esp. in aerial navigation in
which the image of the heavenly body being observed is brought to the edge of a
bubble instead of to the sea horizon, the bubble appearing in its proper position in
the field of view only when the sextant is held so that its zero plane is the
observer's horizontal plane , for ship it is difficult to use, still we can use it when
on polar navigation where due ice horizon is not clear, dat time need to stop ship
go to shore or on ice fixed d sextant , get the sight and come to onboard.
8. Principle of Directional gyro? : Any where on the horizon at any azimuth ,
simultaneous correction for drift and tilt are applied at opposite rates.
Procedure: keeping the slew rate switch on the panel in vertical position, the main
control is set to free flow sector. This is to enable the gyro to preset to required
heading and to remove any tilt. A suitable slow rate of precessional slew is
selected and upon operating appropriate push button the compass precesses to
the required heading and remove any existing tilt. The compass now maintains the
meridian with a reduced damping factor. The main control is retained in free slew
mode and the pendulum signal is disconnected from tilt amplifier but is still
connected to azimuth amplifier. The instrument no longer act as north seeking but
assumes the character of directional gyro. When using the gyro in this fashion
some limit must be placed on the initial azimuth chosen. The error should be
checked frequently using astronomical bodies to check if any wander and there
after gyro should be re slewed. Thus a directional gyro as above provides stabilized
azimuth indication in very high latitudes.
9. A wind rose? = is a graphic tool provides succinct view of how wind speed and
direction are typically distributed at a particular location. The length of each
"spoke" around the circle is related to the frequency that the wind blows from a
particular direction per unit time. Each concentric circle represents a different
frequency, emanating from zero at the center to increasing frequencies at the
outer circles. The directions of the rose with the longest spoke show the wind
direction with the greatest frequency. Wind roses typically use 16 cardinal
directions, such as north (N), NNE, NE, etc.
