CHAPTER I
A. The Background of the Study
A parenting style is a psychological construct representing disciplinary
strategies parents use on their child’s development.Each parent and parent child
relationship is unique but there are 4 major parenting styles recognized in psychology
today: authoritarian, authoritative, neglectful, and permissive.
Authoritarian parenting is also called strict parenting because parents that
display this style are demanding but not responsive – usually relying on punishment to
demand obedience or teach a lesson with little to no communication with the child.
Authoritative parenting is widely regarded as the most effective and
beneficial parenting style for normal children. Parents that display this parenting style
impose rules that their children expected to follow but unlike authoritarian parenting,
authoritative parenting allow some exceptions to the rule. Authoritative parents tend to
have an open communication style with their child – often discussing issues in a
supporting manner instead of simply inflicting punishment.
Neglectful parenting is considered the most harmful parenting style.
Neglectful parents are uninvolved – low in responsiveness and demand - and do not
meet their child’s basic needs.
Permissive parenting is potentially harmful to a child because permissive parents
tend to be tolerant and indulgent while trying to avoid confrontation – having the attitude
of “kids will be kids.”
Self esteem is generally defined as one’s assessment of one’s own self
worth and has a role on healthy human development. One’s self-esteem over time has
been studied a multitude of times with varying outcomes. The most popular finding is
that self-esteem increases throughout adolescence to middle adulthood where it begins
to decrease as one enters old age (Orth, Robins & Widaman,2012).Another study
arrived at the same conclusion of an increase in self-esteem throughout adolescence,
and additionally notes that gender did not make a difference in the expected trajectories
(Erol & Orth, 2011).It is important to note the insignificant effect of gender because the
current study did not consider gender as a variable of interest for that reason. When
looking simply at the adolescent stage, results mostly show ageneral increase in self-
esteem throughout adolescence (Orth, Robins & Widaman, 2012).
Similarly, it is essential to look at possible confounding variables affecting this
increase in self esteem during adolescence.
B. Statement of the Problem
The researchers would like to determine the effects of the different
parenting styles to the self esteem of grade 7 to grade 10 students of St. Matthew
College, S. Y. 2016 - 2017, specifically those belonging in Section A and Section D of
their respective grade levels.
More specifically, the researchers would like to ask the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents?


2. What are the effects of the different parenting styles on the self esteem of grade
7 to grade 10 students of St. Matthew College, S. Y. 2016 – 2017?

C. Hypothesis
The different parenting styles have no effects on the self esteem of a junior high
school student.
D. Scope and Limitation
The present study covers only the grade 7 – 10 students belonging in
section A and section D of St. Matthew College, San Mateo, Rizal for S.Y. 2016 – 2017.
To last for 7 months, the study will focus on the effects of the different parenting styles
on the self esteem of the respondents.
The study would have been more comprehensive and far reaching it
covered more grade levels and sections in St. Matthew College and more schools in San
Mateo, Rizal which would have provided more data for analysis, however, this would
have entailed more time, more money and man power which the researchers do not
have
E. Significance of the Study
This study is focused on the effects of the different parenting styles to the self
esteem of junior high school students, and to help the students’ parents identify which
parenting style they possess.
This study is immensely important for its readers – especially those who are
parents - and even the researchers because it would be of great help in preventing self
esteem related problems of a junior high school student by providing the effects of the
different parenting styles to the self esteem of a junior high school student.
This study could be used as a guide for parents to adjust or change the parenting
style they possess according to the needs of their child.
