The Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean is one of the world’s great oceans, but it is smaller than the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific
Ocean. Africa is to the west of the Indian Ocean, Australia is to the east, Asia is to the north, and the Southern
Ocean is to the south. On average, the Indian Ocean is about 4,000 meters (about 13,000 feet) deep. That means
that it is deeper than the Atlantic Ocean, but it is not as deep as the Pacific Ocean. The deepest point in the
Indian Ocean is near the southern coast of Java.

There are many islands in the Indian Ocean. Madagascar is the largest. Other large islands are Sumatra, Java,
and Sri Lanka. These islands have beautiful beaches and have become very popular with tourists.
