1. Provide a Brief summary and justification for the proposal (e.g., deletion of program,
intent for addition/alteration of program, etc.). Include, when appropriate, needs
assessment, practices at other institutions, impact on recruitment and retention, fit with
College mission, accreditation/certification requirements, etc.
The School of Arts and Sciences proposes a new BFA in film program to be housed in the Art
Department. The proposed program is the result of discussions with Admissions regarding student
demand for such a program, research of practices at other institutions, and the experience of running
a concentration in film studies within the Communication Department. The new program offers a
focused and specialized core and a breadth of study beyond the core that will provide richer learning
experiences than are currently available to students with an interest in filmmaking. It also will position
the College more strategically in the rapidly changing visual arts environments for which such a
program will prepare students, and the time is ripe for this addition as the number of students
interested in filmmaking has grown each year since beginning the concentration. In addition to
benefitting the Art Department with new offerings that will complement its current offerings, housing
this program in Art will enhance the overall environment for aspiring filmmakers, with the potential to
create productive synergy between students engaged in film and those who are studying visual arts in
other contexts. The School of Arts and Sciences is confident that it can attract enrollment into the
program and maintain high retention rates in it, making it a program that can be sustained and
enhanced well into the future. It also will allow the College to significantly diversify its creative visual
arts options and more fully realize the talents of the faculty who have specializations in this area, as
well as those who already teach in existing visual arts programs.
2.1 Please identify the impact the proposed changes will have on faculty and on other
programs (e.g., faculty load, class sizes, overlap with other programs, effect on General
Education, etc.).
The changes listed above will have immediate impact on the Communication and Art faculty. During
the transition period Professor Herbertz will continue to assist in teaching courses in Communication.
For the most part, the new program reflects a consolidation of existing programs, thus requiring only a
minimal number of changes in scheduling. Existing faculty will be able to accommodate this new
program.

The new program also will lead to the elimination of the film studies concentration in Communication,
which will be taught out for any students still in it. Additionally, it will lead to changes in the digital
media concentration in Communication. The new BFA in Film program will complement Art programs
and Film students will join the Art Learning Community as new freshman. It also will provide
additional General Education options and have some crossover with other arts programs, such as
Theatre.
2.2 Please list the official Academic Catalog description of the program.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in film focuses on the integration of theoretical, historical, and
cultural application of film alongside the hands-on production of documentary, narrative and
experimental films using industry standard motion picture equipment and techniques. The rigorous
curriculum includes comprehensive production courses, in addition to cinema studies, art,
screenwriting and more. This program is designed to prepare students for the professional industry in
a variety of professional video and filmic roles as socially and politically informed thinkers, artists, and
professionals.
2.3 Please identify anticipated expenditures the proposed changes will incur (e.g., library
subscription fees or purchases, equipment purchases, departmental budget impact,
administrative fees, lab fees, etc.).
No expenses beyond typical annual operating budgets are expected from the changes.
