Learning Objectives:(a)General objectives:

 To add new words to their vocabulary.


 To justify the title,message and theme of the story.
 To improve all the four skills of English language
i.e.listening,speaking,reading and writing.
 To enable the students to express ideas clearly,concisely and
appropriately (b)Specific Objectives:
 The students will be able to know the consequences of not taking the
balanced diet.
 They will be able to know that we should follow some table manners
during lunch with family.
 They will be able to know that they should always pay respect to their
host and should not become mean.(ppt)
Methodology:

(Pre-reading task)

 Suppose someone has invited you on lunch.Tell some table manners


that you will follow there?
 What could be the possible consequences of excessive eating?
 Have you ever hosted lunch for someone at your home?Tell some
qualities of a good host?
(Reading Task)

After getting the relevant answers the teacher will give the introduction of the
chapter.The students will read the chapter turnwise loudly and side by side the
teacher will explain the chapter as well as theme and message of the chapter.

Key-Concepts:
‘The luncheon’ is a short story by W.Somerset Maugham.The story is an
account of a middle aged woman who greedily gulps down costly dishes in an
extremely expensive restaurant in Paris, at the cost of a not so well-off
upcoming writer.The writer fails to enjoy his lunch for fear of running short of
money at the time of making payment of the bill.The bill amounts to twenty
seven francs and the host leaves a tip of three francs with a sense of guilt.As
the narrator walks out of the restaurant he doesn’t have a single penny in his
pocket.As she bids good bye to him she once again insists that she never eats
more than one thing for luncheon.However ,the narrator has his revenge at
last.When after twenty years they meet in a theatre he finds to his great
satisfaction that the woman weighs twenty-one stone which calculates to a
little over one hundred and thirty three kilograms.
