THE CONNECTORS- Part 1

1. Adding information ( para añadir información )

Also ( también ): Delante del verbo o entre el auxiliar y el verbo.


She also speaks German/We have also bought a house.

Too ( también ): Al final de la frase. She speaks German too.

Furthermore, Moreover, In addition ( además ): Delante de la frase y separado por coma:


In addition/Furthermore/Moreover she speaks German.

Besides ( además ): Delante de la frase y separado por coma: Besides, she speaks German.
o seguido de un nombre, adjetivo o de un verbo significa “además de”: Besides Italian, she
speaks German.

For example/For instance ( por ejemplo ): Delante de la frase y separados pro coma o
acompañando a otra palabra:
We need some things. For instance, we have to buy a new mobile/For instance, a new mobile.

Apart from ( aparte de ): Apart from Italian, she speaks German.

As well as ( al igual que ): She speaks Italian as well as German.

What´s more ( lo que es más ): Roses are beautiful and, what´s more, they aren´t very expensive.

2. To express a contrast ( para expresar un contraste )

But ( pero ): I like it but it is expensive.

However/Nevertheless/still ( sin embargo ):


She was quite ill. Nevertheless/However/Still, she went to school.

While/Whereas ( mientras que ): This TV program is really boring while/whereas that one is great.

In spite of/despite ( a pesar de ): In spite of/despite the cold, she went out in shorts.

Although/Even though ( aunque ): Although/Even though it was cold, she went out in shorts.

Instead ( en cambio ): If you don't have olive oil, you can use sunflower oil instead.

Yet ( aunque ): The weather was cold, yet bright and sunny.

Even if: I want to buy it even if I have to save money for a month.

3. Giving a reason ( para dar una razón )

Because ( + sentence ), ( porque ), Because of ( +sustantivo ) ( por/ a causa de )


The football match was postponed because the weather was bad.
The football match was postponed because of the bad weather,

Since/as ( porque ). I like you since/as you are very honest.

Due to ( debido a ): Due to bad weather, the match was postponed.

Another reason for ( otra razón para …. es…. ): Another reason for the success of Podemos is
people´s dissatisfaction with the government

4. To describe a result ( para describir un resultado )

Therefore, So, Consequently ( por lo tanto ): Our teacher was ill, therefore we didn´t take the exam.

So/Thus ( así que ): There was nothing on TV, so I decided to go to bed.

As a result/ As a consequence ( por consiguiente ): I missed the bus. As a result, I had to wait.

For this reason ( por esta razón ): The teacher was ill and, for this reason, we didn´t take the exam.

That is why ( por eso ): I dislike pasta. That is why I never go to Italian restaurants.

5. To show purpose ( para mostrar propósito )

In order ( not ) to seguido de infinitive ( para ( no ) ): I'm going to Ireland in order to visit my family.

So as ( not ) to seguido de infinitivo ( para ( no ) ): I went to the post office so as to buy some
stamps.

So that ( para que ): I am saving money so that I can buy a new car.

To ( para ) seguido de infinitivo: I went to the post office to buy some stamps.

For ( para ) seguido de sustantivo: I work for money.

For ( para ) seguido de gerundio: I use this for cleaning.

6. To describe similarity ( para tratar la semejanza )

Similarly/Likewise ( igualmente ): Cars must stop at red traffic lights. Similarly, bicycles should stop too.

In the same way ( de la misma manera ): You need time to learn how to swim. You learn a foreign
language in the same way.

7. To express personal opinions ( para expresar opiniones )

In my opinion ( en mi opinión ): In my opinion, the referee was wrong.

In my view/from my point of view ( desde mi punto de vista ): In my view, alcohol should be


forbidden.

I ( strongly )believe ( that ) ( creo ( firmemente ) ( que ) ): I believe ( that ) the referee was wrong.

I think/I feel ( that ) ( creo que ): I feel ( that ) the government won´t do anything about this
problem.

It seems to me ( that ) ( me parece que ): It seems to me ( that ) the economic crisis is over.

Personally ( personalmente ): Personally, I am against abortion.

As I see it ( como yo lo veo ): As I see it, the president was right.

8. To describe reality ( para describir la realidad )

As a matter of fact /In fact ( de hecho ):Pepe is a good basket player. In fact, he has won a lot of
competitions.

Actually ( en realidad ): Pepe is very short but, actually, he is a good basket player.

The truth is ( that ) ( la verdad es que ): The truth is that I don´t like politicians.

9. To make general statements ( para generalizar )

In general/Generally ( en general ): Generally, people don´t worry much about the environment.

As a rule ( por norma ): As a rule, I stay home on Friday nights.

On the whole ( por lo general ): On the whole, the beach in Sanlúcar is overcrowded.

10. To list points ( para hacer una relación de puntos )

To begin with/To start with/In the first place/First/Firstly/First of all ( para empezar ): First of all, I want to
say it´s great to be here.

Secondly ( en segundo lugar ), Thirdly ( en tercer lugar ): Secondly, I want to thank you all.

Finally/Lastly ( finalmente ): Finally, I want to thank my parents for their support.

11. To introduce opposing points ( para presentar hechos opuestos )

On the one hand…on the other hand ( por un lado….por otro): On the one hand she is always late
but, on the other hand, she always does her homework.

In contrast ( por contra ): Today, some people have no money to buy basic things. In contrast, the
luxury market is growing.

Contrary to ( en contra de ): Contrary to expectations, people are not buying the new IPhone,

12. To show sequence ( para mostrar un orden temporal )

In the beginning ( al principio ): In the beginning, the situation was chaotic.

Then ( entonces ), Next/ afterwards/after ( después ): Then, someone called the police.

After that ( después de eso ): After that, the police came.

As soon as ( tan pronto como ): As soon as they arrived, the situation was under control.

When ( cuando ): When he saw the police, he went to talk to them.

While ( mientras ): While he was talking to them, the woman was sitting on a bench.

Suddenly ( de pronto ): Suddenly, they heard a new wxplosion.

At that moment ( en ese momento ): At that moment, a new car appeared.

Meanwhile ( mientras tanto ): Meanwhile, a lot of people stopped to see what was happening.

Until/Til ( Hasta ): She stayed there until the man explained everything.

13. To conclude ( para concluir )

Suelen ir todos al inicio de la oración y separados pro coma.

In short/In brief/In summary/To sum up/Summing up ( en resumen ): In short, she had a great time in
Ireland.

To conclude/In conclusion ( en conclusión ): In conclusion, come to Sanlúcar and enjoy our city.
