weld metal or deposited metal when checking welding and technological properties, re-calcination of all
electrodes of a controlled batch with subsequent verification of the relevant indicators.

Upon receipt of unsatisfactory test results according to 4.8 in terms of the chemical composition of the
weld metal, mechanical and special properties and characteristics of the weld metal, weld metal or
welded joint, repeated tests and double the number of samples are allowed to check the indicators for
which an unsatisfactory result was obtained. Retest results are final.

4.8, 4.9. (Amended edition, Amendment No. 1).

5. TEST METHODS

5.1. The electrodes selected according to clause 4.4 are subjected to inspection without the use of
magnifying devices and to measurement.

The length of the electrode , the length of the end cleaned from the coating , the total length of the
end and the transition area and the length of dents, cracks and sections of mesh cracking on the
surface of the coating are measured with an error of 1 mm.

The length of the exposed core, the depth of dents, scoring and pore size on the surface of the coating is
measured with an error of 0.1 mm

(Amended edition, Amendment No. 1).

5.2. (Excluded, Amendment No. 1).

5.3. The difference in the thickness of the coating is determined in three places of the electrode, offset
from each other by 50-100 mm in length and (120 ± 15) °around the circumference.

Measurements at each location are made with a micrometer in accordance with the diagram shown in
Fig. 3, with an error of 0.01 mm.

The value ( ) in millimeters is calculated by the formula

It is allowed to check the difference in coating thickness by other methods and special devices (magnetic,
capacitive, etc.) that provide the required measurement accuracy.

(Amended edition, Amendment No. 1).

5.4. The results of checking the strength of the coating are evaluated by external inspection of the
tested electrodes and by measuring the detected spalls of the coating with an error of 1 mm.

5.5. The moisture content in the coating is determined by bringing the coating removed from each
controlled electrode to a constant weight at the following temperatures:

- mass of the rod of the same part of the electrode, g

The mass is determined by weighing with an error of 0.1 g.

5.7. When checking the welding and technological properties of the electrodes intended for welding
steels, the electrodes of the controlled batch perform one unilateral welded t-shaped sample and one
bilateral welded t-shaped sample.

In cases established by the standards or specifications for electrodes of a particular brand, instead of a
one-sided welded T-piece, a pipe welded butt-type sample is performed.

Notes:

1. On bilateral welded tee samples, the tendency of the seams to form cracks is checked.

2. If a stricter test is provided by the standard or specifications for the electrodes of a controlled grade
to test the tendency of welds to form cracks, the performance of bilateral welded T-joints is not
mandatory.

3. In the cases established by the standard or specifications for the electrodes of a controlled grade, the
performance of bilateral welded t-shaped samples is not allowed, however, the manufacturer must
ensure that there is no tendency to crack in the welds made by the electrodes of this batch in
accordance with the requirements of this standard.

(Amended edition, Amendment N 1, 2).

5.8. For the manufacture of welded samples when checking according to clause 5.5 of the electrodes for
welding carbon structural steels, plates made of steel grade St3sp according to GOST 380 and pipes from
steel grade 20 according to GOST 1050 should be used .

If the electrodes are designed for welding both carbon and low alloy structural steels, the steel grades of
plates and pipes must comply with the electrodes of the controlled grade specified in the standard or
technical specifications.

5.9. For the manufacture of welded samples when checking according to clause 5.5 of the electrodes for
welding low alloyed, alloyed and high alloyed steels, plates and pipes made of steel should be used, for
welding of which electrodes of a controlled grade are intended.

If the electrodes are intended for welding steels of several grades or for welding steel from which sheet
metal and pipes are not made, the grades of steel of the plates and pipes must comply with the
electrodes of the controlled grade specified in the standard or technical specifications.
It is allowed to replace plates of low alloyed and alloyed steels with plates of steel of the St3sp grade
in accordance with GOST 380 and plates of high alloyed steels with plates of other steels of the same
structural class, provided that the plates are deposited by controlled electrodes in at least three layers
at the weld seams and adjacent areas with a width of at least 25 mm to them with machining of
deposited surfaces.

Note. It is allowed surfacing with electrodes of other batches of the same brand (including a different
diameter).

5.8, 5.9. (Amended edition, Amendment No. 1).

5.13. To check the welding and technological properties of electrodes intended for surfacing of surface
layers with special properties, the electrodes of a controlled batch perform one surfacing sample with
four deposited layers on a plate of steel grade St3sp according to GOST 380 or of steel for which the
electrodes are intended for surfacing. The dimensions of the plate should be 120x80x20 mm (previous
off. Length and width ± 5 mm, thickness ± 2 mm).

The surfacing length must be at least 80 mm and the width at least eight diameters of the electrodes to
be monitored.

Note. For electrodes providing an average hardness of deposited metal > 42, it is allowed to
carry out a surfacing sample with three or two deposited layers, if this is provided for by the standard or
technical specifications for electrodes of a controlled grade.

(Amended edition, Amendment No. 1).

5.14. Welding and surfacing of samples to check the welding and technological properties of the
electrodes should be carried out in compliance with the conditions and conditions established by the
standards or specifications for the electrodes of a controlled brand, at an ambient temperature of at
least +5 ° C in the following spatial positions:

in the position specified in the standard or technical conditions - when performing unilateral welded T-
joints;

in the "lower to the boat" position - when performing bilateral welded T-joints;

in a non-rotary position with a horizontal axis of the specimen - when performing pipe welded butt
specimens;

in the lower position - when performing surfacing samples.

(Amended edition, Amendment N 1, 2).

5.15. Welding of fillet welds of tee samples is carried out in one pass.

When performing bilateral welded tee samples, both fillet welds are performed in the same direction,
preventing the sample from cooling. Welding of the control seam is carried out after the seam is made,
which ensures the rigidity of the sample.

Note. In cases established by the standard or specifications for electrodes of a controlled grade, one-
sided T-shaped specimens are allowed to be welded in more than one pass. At the same time, the leg of
the seam must comply with the standards or specifications.

(Amended edition, Amendment No. 1).

5.16. The ease of excitation and the stability of the arc burning, the uniformity of melting of the
electrodes, and the correct formation of the weld beads or the weld surface, as well as the ease of slag
removal, are controlled by observation during welding or surfacing of samples.

5.17. The control of welded joints or deposited surfaces of the samples for the absence of surface cracks,
tears and pores is performed by external inspection using a magnifier with a five-fold
increase. Inspection should be carried out along the entire length of the seams and over the entire area
of the deposited surfaces after careful removal of slag, splashes of molten metal and other
contaminants.

5.18. The continuity of the fillet weld of a one-sided welded T-piece with the assessment of the size and
number of internal gas and slag inclusions is checked after the fracture of the weld by inspecting the
fracture surfaces over the entire area and measuring the inclusions detected or penetrating by
penetrating radiation according to GOST 7512 or by sequentially removing the layers of the weld metal
by inspection the surface of each layer over the entire area and the measurement of detected
inclusions. In the latter case, the thickness of each removable layer should be equal to half the
maximum size of inclusions allowed by clause 3.12; the roughness parameters of the surfaces to be
inspected should not exceed 40 microns in accordance with GOST 2789, and the same inclusion
detected on more than two surfaces is unacceptable.

Inspection of controlled surfaces in all cases is carried out using a magnifier with a five-fold increase.

It is allowed to perform a longitudinal incision from the surface of the seam to ensure its destruction
along the critical section.

Note. By order of the consumer, the check of the continuity of fillet welds should be carried out by
transmission through penetrating radiation or layer-by-layer inspection. The right to choose a
verification method (of the two specified) is reserved by the manufacturer.

5.19. The continuity of the butt weld of a pipe welded sample with the assessment of the size and
number of internal gas and slag inclusions is checked by translucent penetrating radiation according
to GOST 7512 or with a layer-by-layer groove of the seam (in diameter or from the end) by inspecting
the surface of each layer through a magnifier with a five-fold increase and measuring the dimensions of
the identified inclusions . The thickness of each layer removed during grooving should be equal to half
the maximum inclusion size allowed by clause 3.12. The roughness parameters of the surfaces to be
inspected should not exceed 40 microns in accordance with GOST 2789 . The same inclusion,
detected on more than two surfaces, is unacceptable.

It is allowed to check the continuity of the weld of the pipe sample when transversely cutting the
specimen along the axis of the weld, followed by inspection of the cut surfaces over the entire area
using a magnifier with a five-fold increase. The width of the cut should not exceed the diameter of the
controlled electrodes and should not be more than 3 mm, and the roughness parameters of the cut
surfaces should not be more than 40 microns according to GOST 2789 .

5.20. The fillet welds of bilateral welded T-shaped specimens are checked for cracks by inspection
through a magnifying glass of a five-fold increase in three transverse macro sections cut from the middle
and ends of the controlled weld outside the crater location zone.

Notes:

1. (Excluded, Amendment No. 1).

2. In doubtful cases, macroscopic examination is replaced by microexamination of the same sections.

5.18-5.20. (Amended edition, Amendment No. 1).

5.21. The continuity of the weld metal on the surfacing samples is checked by inspecting the surface of
the surfacing after preliminary removal of the upper layer to a depth of 1.5-3.0 mm through a magnifier
of five-fold increase.
Note. With an average hardness of deposited metal > 42, it is possible to grind the surface of the
surfacing without removing the upper layer to a depth of 1.5-3.0 mm.

5.22. To check the chemical composition of the deposited metal on a plate made of steel of grade St3sp
according to GOST 380 or steel, for welding or surfacing of which electrodes are intended, or from steel
of 08Kh18N10 or 12Kh18N9T grades according to GOST 5632 , eight-layer surfacing with electrodes of a
controlled batch is performed. The dimensions of the plate should be 120x80x20 mm (with a
predecessor of off length and width of ± 5 mm, thickness of ± 2 mm), the surfacing area should be at
least 80x40 mm. For electrodes with a diameter of up to 5 mm, the plate thickness can be reduced, but
should not be less than four electrode diameters.

When checking electrodes for surfacing of surface layers with special properties providing an average

hardness of deposited metal > 42, in cases specified by the standard or technical specifications
for electrodes of a controlled grade, five-layer surfacing is allowed.

(Amended edition, Amendment No. 1).

5.23. Samples for chemical and spectral analyzes of the deposited metal should be taken from the three
upper layers of the eight-layer surfacing or from the two upper layers of the five-layer surfacing
according to paragraph 5.22. Chips from deposited metal with a carbon content of less than 0.04% are
selected in accordance with the additional instructions of the standard or technical specifications for the
electrodes of a controlled grade.

The chemical composition of the weld metal is determined according to GOST 12344 - GOST
12365 , GOST 18895 , GOST 28473 , GOST 22536.0 - GOST 22536.12 or other methods that ensure the
accuracy of determination provided for by these standards.

It is allowed to conduct gas analysis of the deposited metal by methods provided for by standards or
specifications for electrodes of a controlled grade.

Before sampling, it is allowed to perform softening heat treatment of the deposited metal.

If when checking the electrodes for surfacing surface layers with special properties, the use of softening

heat treatment cannot reduce the average hardness of the deposited metal to 42, in cases
provided for by the standard or technical specifications for electrodes of a controlled grade, it is possible
to replace the quantitative analysis of the chemical composition of the deposited metal with its
qualitative spectral analysis by confirmation of the brand composition. In this case, the manufacturer
must ensure compliance with the chemical composition of the deposited metal by controlled electrodes
of the requirements of GOST 10051 and the standard or technical conditions.

Qualitative spectral analysis is carried out for the presence, absence or approximate content of alloying
elements in accordance with the instructions of the standard or technical conditions for the electrodes
of a controlled brand.
(Amended edition, Amendment N 1, 2).

5.24. To check the mechanical properties of the weld metal, the electrodes of the controlled batch
perform butt welding of two steel plates with a pre-welded steel lining with a cross section of 30x10 mm
(option A). The dimensions of each plate should correspond to those indicated in table.9.

When checking electrodes with a diameter of up to 5 mm, it is allowed to butt weld two steel plates
with a length of 330 mm, a width of 100 mm and a thickness of 14-18 mm each with welding of the root
of the seam with electrodes of a controlled grade (option B).

Notes:

1. Butt welded joints of steel plates are performed only when checking electrodes intended for welding
steel.

2. If the standard or specifications for the electrodes of a controlled grade provide for checking the
special properties of the weld metal (additional checking of mechanical properties at high or low
temperatures, checking for intergranular corrosion, etc.), the length of the plates should be accordingly
increased or additional butt welds should be made connections.

3. It is allowed to perform individual butt welds to test the weld metal for impact bending with a
corresponding reduction in the length of the welded plates.

5.25. When checking electrodes for welding carbon structural steels or carbon and low alloy structural
steels, the plates and lining according to paragraph 5.24 should be made of steel grade St3sp according
to GOST 380 .

When checking the electrodes for welding low alloy, alloy and high alloy steels, the plates and lining
should be made of steel, for welding of which electrodes of a controlled grade are intended.

If the electrodes are intended for welding low-alloyed, alloyed or high-alloyed steels of several grades or
for welding steel from which sheet metal is not made, the grade of steel of the plates and linings must
comply with the electrodes of the controlled grade specified in the standard or technical specifications.

It is allowed to replace plates and linings from low alloyed and alloyed steels with plates and linings from
steel grade St3sp in accordance with GOST 380 and plates and linings from high alloyed steels with
plates and linings from other steels of the same structural class, provided that the edges of the plates
and the lining surface to be welded by controlled electrodes are pre-welded . Surfacing should be
performed in at least three layers prior to assembly of the joint. The deposited edges and the surface of
the lining must be machined, after which the thickness of the deposited layer should be at least 2.5
diameters of the controlled electrodes.

Notes:

1. In the case of preliminary surfacing of the edges of the plates and the surface of the lining, it is
allowed to increase the width of the plates and the thickness of the lining by the thickness of the
deposited layer.

2. Surfacing of the edges of the plates and the surface of the lining by electrodes of other batches of the
same brand (including a different diameter) is allowed.

5.24, 5.25. (Amended edition, Amendment No. 1).

5.26. For butt welds according to paragraph 5.24, the structural elements for preparing the edges for
welding should correspond to those shown in Fig. 7, and the welded joints should correspond to Fig. 8.

5.27. The preparation of the edges of the plates for welding should be done mechanically. On plates
made of steel grade VSt3sp, edge preparation by mechanized oxygen-acetylene cutting is
allowed. Before welding, the edges of the plates must be cleaned from rust, scale, oil and other
contaminants.

5.28. Welding of plates should be carried out in compliance with the conditions and conditions
established by the passport or technical specifications for the electrodes of a controlled grade (including
preliminary and concurrent heating welding), in the lower position, at an ambient temperature of at
least +5 ° С.

The value of the welding current should be 85-95% of the maximum allowable for the electrodes of the
controlled grade of this diameter. Each electrode should be used fully. The length of the remaining
cinder should not exceed 50 mm. The width of each weld bead should not exceed four diameters of the
tested electrodes, unless otherwise specified by the passport or technical specifications for the
electrodes of the controlled grade. The direction of welding should be changed at each next pass. When
welding without heating, each subsequent pass should be performed after cooling the metal of the
previously completed part of the weld to a temperature below 250 ° C, unless other requirements are
established by the standard or specifications for the electrodes of a controlled grade.

5.29. The performed butt welded joint is subjected to heat treatment, if such is provided for by the
standard or specifications for the electrodes of a controlled grade. Heat treatment modes must comply
with those specified in the standard or specifications.

5.30. From a butt welded joint for checking the mechanical properties of the weld metal, three
specimens for tensile testing of type II and three specimens for testing for impact bending (impact
strength) of types VI or IX according to GOST 6996 are made and manufactured .

The type of specimens for impact bending tests (VI or IX) is taken in accordance with the instructions of
the standard or technical specifications for the electrodes of the controlled grade. If the toughness test
of the weld metal on type IX samples is provided for by the standard or technical specifications, the
manufacturer must also ensure that the value of the toughness of the weld metal is compliant with the
requirements of GOST 9467 or GOST 10052 , although in this case the test of type VI samples is not
mandatory.

Cutting of samples is carried out mechanically in accordance with the scheme shown in Fig. 9.

Heck. nine

2 - samples for impact bending tests

Damn. 9

From welded joints made by electrodes for welding carbon structural steels, it is allowed to cut blanks of
samples by mechanized oxygen-acetylene cutting with allowances of at least 2.5 mm on each side.

Samples for tensile testing, as well as the working part of the samples for impact bending tests shall be
made entirely of weld metal.

5.29, 5.30. (Amended edition, Amendment N 1, 2).

5.31. Checking the mechanical properties of the weld metal can be replaced by checking the mechanical
properties of the weld metal. At the same time, on a plate made of steel grade St3sp
in accordance with GOST 380 with a size of 350x100x20 mm, the electrodes of the controlled grade
perform preliminary five-layer surfacing, on the surface of which the electrodes of the tested batch in
the longitudinal directionlayers of metal with a total thickness of 20-24 mm are deposited.

The surfacing area in the upper part must be at least 330x65 mm.

The requirements of clause 5.28 regarding welding instructions, clause 5.29 regarding heat treatment,
and clause 5.29 regarding the quantity, types and methods of cutting specimens for testing the
mechanical properties of deposited metal apply to multilayer surfacing performed under this
paragraph. Using for cutting samples of the initial and final sections of surfacing with a length of 30 mm
and longitudinal edges of the surfacing with a width of 5 mm is not allowed.

The blanks of all samples should be cut from the upper layers of the surfacing without trapping the
metal of the preliminary five-layer surfacing. In this case, the blanks of samples for tensile testing should
be cut along the direction of surfacing, and the blanks of samples for impact bending testing should be
transverse to the indicated direction.

Notes:

1. It is allowed to perform preliminary five-layer surfacing with electrodes of other batches (including
other diameters).

2. At the cutting site of specimens for tensile testing, the surfacing width may be reduced to 35 mm.
5.32. When monitoring electrodes with a diameter of less than 3 mm intended for welding carbon and
low alloy structural steels with a temporary tensile strength of less than 60 kgf / mm , checking the
mechanical properties of the weld metal can be replaced by checking the mechanical properties of the
welded joint, for which two steel plates of size 250x90x3 mm each.

The plates should be made of steel, for welding of which electrodes of the checked grade are
intended. If the electrodes are intended for welding steels of several grades or for welding steel, from
which sheet metal is not manufactured, the grade of steel of the plates must comply with the electrodes
of the controlled grade specified in the standard or technical specifications.

Note. If the standard or specifications for the electrodes of a controlled grade provide for checking the
special properties of the welded joint (additional checking of mechanical properties at high
temperatures, checking for intergranular corrosion, etc.), the dimensions of the plates should be
increased accordingly or additional plates should be welded.

5.33. In cases established by the standard or specifications for electrodes of a controlled grade, it is
allowed to replace the verification of the mechanical properties of the weld metal by checking the
mechanical properties of the welded joint according to paragraph 5.22 for electrodes with a diameter of
less than 3 mm intended for welding alloyed and high alloy steels, with the following conditions being
mandatory:

the minimum value of the tensile strength of the metal of the welded steel plates should not be lower
than the minimum values temporary resistance the gap allowed for performed by the electrodes of the
controlled grade of the weld metal;

the type and modes of heat treatment of the welded joint before mechanical testing should ensure the
minimum value of the temporary tensile strength of the base metal in the weakened section of the
heat-affected zone of welding is not lower than the minimum value of the temporary tensile strength
allowed for the weld metal made by the electrodes.

Notes:

1. It is allowed to reduce the thickness of the welded plates to 2 mm for cases stipulated by the standard
or specifications for the electrodes of the controlled brand.

2. The mechanical properties of the welded joint must comply with the requirements of the standard or
technical conditions for the electrodes of the controlled grade. Moreover, the requirements for
temporary tensile strength for a welded joint should not be lower than the corresponding requirements
for weld metal.

5.32, 5.33. (Amended edition, Amendment N 1, 2).

5.34. The plates are welded to check the mechanical properties of the welded joint from two sides
without cutting edges with a gap that ensures the absence of lack of penetration, and in compliance
with the requirements of 5.28. The need and modes of heat treatment of a welded joint are determined
by the instructions of the standard or technical conditions for the electrodes of the controlled grade.

5.35. To check the mechanical properties of the welded joint, three specimens for tensile testing of type
XIII and three specimens for testing for static bending of type XXVIII according to GOST 6996 are cut out
and made of welded plates .

Cutting of samples is carried out mechanically in accordance with the scheme shown in Fig. 10.

Heck. 10

1 - samples for static tensile testing;

2 - samples for static bending tests

Damn. 10

Notes:

1. In cases established by the standard or specifications for electrodes of a controlled grade, tensile tests
on specimens of type XXIV are allowed, and static bending tests on samples of type XXVI according
to GOST 6996 .

2. If, when checking electrodes for welding alloyed structural steels with a temporary tensile strength of
more than 60 kgf / mm, the welded plates are subjected to hardening heat treatment to ensure the
required mechanical properties of the welded joint, it is allowed to cut the sample blanks after
preliminary softening heat treatment followed by hardening heat treatment of the workpieces before
fine machining of samples.

5.36. The hardness of the deposited metal is checked during the inspection of electrodes for surfacing of
surface layers with special properties on the surface of an eight-layer or five-layer surfacing, performed
to check the chemical composition of the deposited metal, unless other conditions for testing the
hardness are specified by the standard or technical specifications for the electrodes of the controlled
grade.

5.37. Tests of the mechanical properties of the weld metal, weld metal and welded joint are carried out
in accordance with GOST 6996 . Test conditions and evaluation of their results must comply with the
requirements of Section 3 of GOST 6996 and the standard or technical specifications for electrodes of a
controlled brand.

If there are appropriate indications in the standard or technical specifications for the electrodes of a
controlled grade, the samples or their preforms are kept for 6 to 16 hours in an electric furnace at a
temperature of 240-260 ° C or for 24 hours in boiling water for tensile and static bending tests.

5.38. The content of the ferrite phase in the metal deposited by electrodes with a diameter of more
than 2.5 mm is determined by the volumetric magnetic method using ferritometers that provide a
measurement error of ± 10% of the measured value.

To determine the content of the ferritic phase by the specified method on a plate measuring 160x80x16
mm (previous off length and width ± 5 mm, thickness ± 2 mm) from steel grade St3sp according to GOST
380 or from steel for welding of which electrodes of a controlled grade are intended, or fromsteel grade

or of steel grade 08X18H10 or 12X18H9T according to GOST 5632, the number of deposited layers can
be reduced to five.

Surfacing is carried out in current modes regulated by the standard or technical specifications for the
electrodes of a controlled brand. Surfacing length must be at least 150 mm. Before applying each
subsequent roll, the previously deposited metal must be cooled to a temperature below 100 ° C.

Two control samples are cut out and made of a seven-layer or five-layer surfacing and made of a length
of (60 ± 1) mm and a diameter of (5.0 ± 0.1) mm.

Testing of control samples is carried out according to the operating instructions of the ferritometer.

The determination of the content of the ferritic phase in a metal deposited with electrodes with a
diameter of up to 2.5 mm is carried out by the metallographic method according to GOST 11878 in the
three upper layers of an eight-layer surfacing made in accordance with paragraph 5.22.

Note. When performing the eight-layer surfacing according to paragraph 5.22 by electrodes to be
checked for the content of the ferrite phase in the deposited metal, the size of the plates can be
increased, and after the deposition of each layer, the plate should be cooled with water.

5.39. Testing of weld metal, deposited metal and welded joint for intergranular corrosion is carried out
according to GOST 6032 . The test method is adopted in accordance with the instructions of the
standard or technical conditions for the electrodes of a controlled brand.
