Exciting Changes for the Young Artist Festival! 
 
 
The Young Artist Festival has been renovated into a renewed prestigious musical event in Durango, Colorado happening 
on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Fort Lewis College. Following is a list of the changes for your perusal.   

● TWO (2) pieces must be performed (rather than one). Only ONE (1) must be memorized. 
● Students must bring original music with measures numbered. NO photocopies accepted. 
● Students must score 70% or higher on the THEORY Exam and/or TERMS AND SIGNS Exam. 
● Students may enter to perform on more than one instrument. Separate registrations are required for each 
instrument. 
● Dance evaluation is no longer available. 
● Students who complete and pass all requirements will receive an AWARD MEDAL. Students who fail to complete 
the requirements will receive a PARTICIPATION RIBBON. 

Although the Festival Forms reflect these changes, we thought it would be helpful to highlight the changes for teachers’ 
information and inspiration.

YOUNG ARTIST FESTIVAL 
Guidelines and Requirements 
 
Date: Saturday, February 29, 2020, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm 
Location: Jones Hall, Fort Lewis College 
Entry Fee: $20 per student, $25 per non-member student

Purpose​: ​The Young Artist Festival is a non-competitive music festival in Durango, Colorado. It is open to students of all 
instruments and levels. 
 
Student Requirements and Procedures​: Each student will perform privately for an evaluator and will receive written 
comments and critique of his/her performance. To receive the medal, see requirements below.​ If the student does not 
complete the requirements, a participation ribbon will be given. 
 
 
REQUIREMENTS TO RECEIVE MEDAL 
 
1. Students must perform TWO PIECES. One must be ​memorized​. ​Student must bring original music with 
measures numbered. 
2. Students complete one or more options: 
● Technique*​ – students perform scales, arpeggios, and/or chords 
● Terms & Signs Test*​ - students must pass with a 70% or higher 
● Theory Test*​ - students must pass with a 70% or higher   
● Ensemble Piece​ -​ ​memorization not required, submit separate E​ nsemble Evaluation Form 
● Original Composition​ - performance only (notation optional), indicate title on ​Evaluation Form 
● Written Project​ - related to music - submit with ​Written Project Evaluation Form ​by Feb. 11-12 
● Art Project​ - related to music - submit with ​Art Project Evaluation Form ​by Feb. 11-12

Drop off at Patty Mack’s Studio (Master’s Touch Music) at 1315 Main Avenue #217(next to I AM
