The Big One

Are we ready for the biggest disaster that will happen here in Metro
Manila? Also known as “The Big One”. Are we prepared enough to save
ourselves from it? When it will happen?
Last Oct 5, 2019 we had a seminar about the Big One. According to the
speaker, Philippines is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, so we are experiencing
often earthquakes in our country. There are five active fault lines in the
country, these are the Western Philippine Fault, the Eastern Philippine Fault,
the South of Mindanao Fault, the Central Philippine Fault, and the most
famous one the Marikina Valley Fault or the West Valley Fault. The West
Valley Fault is the one we are preparing to, here in Metro Manila. The West
Valley Fault is 100 kilometers in length and covered the cities of Metro Manila
namely Taguig, Muntinlupa, Paranaque, Quezon City, Pasig, Makati, and
Marikina as well as nearby provinces of Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, and Bulacan.
These places will suffer greatly when this fault move. When the big one
happen, it is expected that it could be 7.2 magnitude. Pasay is not part of the
West Valley Fault, but it is also affected when the earthquake strike. Strong
Earthquake can trigger a Tsunami, if that happens Pasay will be 98% wash-
out. It is said that Metro Manila is most developed place in the country, but it
appears to be the most dangerous and uninhabitable city when the “Big One”
earthquake strike.
