Catalog Course Description:

Survey of choral music literature from the 15th century to the present.

Prerequisite: completion of MUH 371 & 372; Music Majors only.

Student Learning Outcomes:

a. Assimilate knowledge of the subject matter listed above through assigned


readings, listening assignments, and writings.
b. Compare/contrast the stylistic characteristics of the major composers from
each time period.
c. Differentiate the prominent genres of choral music from each time period.
d. Identify the monumental major works from each time period.
e. Analyze an assigned major work in the form of an 8-10 page paper (MUS 756
only)

b. Keep up with all readings and listening assignments as listed on the course
calendar.
c. Assignments should be completed and submitted online via Blackboard no
later than 11:59 PM on the Sunday after the module has been made
available.
d. All work is to be submitted digitally in the form of a PDF file, via the
Blackboard website (as it will be time-stamped accordingly).
e. Please put your name in the upper right hand corner, and number the pages.
f. Please save your file in all caps and no spaces, starting with MODULE,
underscore, module #, underscore, your last name, period, and your first
initial.
i. Example: MODULE_3_WATERS.R
g. What you should expect from me:
i. I will check my email daily and respond within 24-36 hours (24-48
hours on weekends).
ii. If you have a question, concern, idea, etc. that I think will benefit
others in the class, I will ask you to post it in the “Water Cooler” area.
iii. Module assignments will be graded within a week of submission.
Grades can be tracked throughout the semester via Blackboard.
h. Paper (MUS 756 only): Using the essay / program notes style of Michael
Steinberg’s Choral Masterworks: A Listener’s Guide, write an 8-10 page paper
(double spaced) on one of the major works listed below. Be sure to include
the following information:
i. History of the work (who? when? where?)
ii. Performing forces (type of choir, soloists, instrumental forces)
iii. Text (subject, source, language, etc.)
iv. Musical structure (# of movements; solos? duets? recitative? etc.)
v. Other salient information and/or details that make this work unique
