Justify your answer mathematically or in words. For Q1-Q5, answers without justification
will only receive partial credit (1 point).

1. (3 points) Two identical solid spheres A and B, both with mass m, are released from rest at the
top of a ramp such that their centers are at the same height above the ground. One side of the
ramp is frictionless and the other side is rough. Sphere A moves down along the frictionless side
and sphere B moves down along the rough side, as shown below. Compare the speed of the
center of mass for A and B when they reach the bottom of the ramp. Which one of the following
is true? Assume rolling without slip on the rough side.
Ans: __________

(A). VA > VB
(B). VA = VB
(C). VA < VB

2. (3 points) The pendulum shown below consists of a slender rod AB and a wooden block. The
center of mass of the pendulum is located at point G. A bullet is fired to the block. After the
impact, the bullet becomes embedded in the block. What momentum is conserved before and
after impact?
Ans: __________

(A). Total linear momentum of bullet and pendulum

(B). Total angular momentum of bullet and pendulum about center G
(C). Total angular momentum of bullet and pendulum about hinge A
(D). Angular momentum of pendulum about hinge A
(E). None of the above

3. (3 points) A man is holding two dumbbells while standing on a turntable of negligible mass,
which turns freely about a vertical axis. When his arm are full extended, the turntable is rotating
with an angular velocity of 2 rad/s. When he retracts his arms to the position shown, the angular
velocity becomes:
Ans: __________

(A) Larger than 2 rad/s

(B) Smaller than 2 rad/s
(C) Equal to 2 rad/s
(D) Not enough information given

3. (3 points) A circular disk of radius r is rolling with slip on the ground. At this moment, the
kinetic friction force Ff at the contacting point A points to the right as shown in the free body
diagram below. Which of the following statement about the relation between the velocity VG and
angular velocity  is correct? Assume VG points to the right and  is clockwise.
Ans: __________
(A). VG  r
(B). VG  r
(C). VG  r
(D). Not enough information given

5. (3 points) Consider three cylinders with the same outer radius r, but different cross-sectional
shapes. The blank area indicates empty space and the shaded area indicates uniformly distributed
mass. Rank the radius of gyration about the center of mass G for the three cases.
Ans: __________

(A) I > II > III

(B) III > II > I
(C) II > I > III
(D) II > III > I
(E) Not enough information given

6. (15 Points) The 6 kg lever OA has a radius of gyration of 250mm about O. Its center of mass
G is located at a distance of 200mm from O, and a linear spring of stiffness k =350N/m is
attached to the lever as shown. The lever is released from at reset at  = 45o, where the spring is
unstretched. Determine the angular velocity of the lever OA when it reaches the horizontal
position (= 0o).

7. (25 Points) A spool (ms = 7kg) with a radius of gyration of kG = 0.2m is connected to a block
(mb=10kg) through a tight cable winded on the spool and a massless pulley. The system is
released from at rest. Assume the spool rolls without slip on the slope, and there is no relative
slip between the cable and the spool.

Determine angular acceleration of the spool and acceleration of the block.

8. (25 Points) A uniform bar of length l = 0.8 m and mass m = 1.2 kg falls onto the ground. Just
before hitting the ground, the entire bar is translating with a vertical downward velocity of V1
=5m/s (no rotation), and makes an angle of  = 30o with the horizontal direction (see figure
below). Upon impact the end C of the bar gets stuck to the ground, and the bar rotates about
point C after impact.

a) (15 points) Determine the angular velocity of the bar just after impact.
b) (5 points) Determine the velocity of the center of the mass G just after impact.
c) (5 points) Determine the impulse on the bar at C due to impact (Hint: need to use the result of
part b).

Show both magnitude and direction for the three questions.
