PROJECT PROFILE
ON
BIO FLOC SHRIMP FORMING

A) INTRODUCTION

Biofloc technology is a technique of flocculating heterotrophic food in aquaculture

ponds through balancing carbon and nitrogen in the system. Biofloc is a consortium of algae,

bacteria (Both useful and pathogenic), saprophytes and such other microscopic plankton.

About 60% of the microscopic natural food in the pond is less than 60 micron which even

fishes cannot feed on them. When they are flocculated, they are available for fishes and it

forms a very nutritive food with 12- 25% protein, 15-32% dry matter and 30-60%

carbohydrates on dry weigh matter. This flocculation enhances water quality and reduces

the requirement of supplementary diet. BFT is all about managing C: N ratio (Carbon and

Nitrogen ratio) and ammonia. If this ratio is maintained more than 10 in aquaculture ponds,

the productivity increases significantly. In other words, it is recycling of nutrients and

nutrients recovery in the form of biomass. The nitrogen is available in plenty in any aqua

farm. It comes from feed waste, faecal matter and dead and decayed material in the pond

but carbon is a limiting factor. Hence, it has to be supplied from the outside. In many

countries, farmers use molasses. These days’ molasses is in high demand and it goes for

alcohol production. As alternatives joggery or sugar can be used.

B) MARKET POTENTIAL

The food and agriculture organization (FAO) recently predicted that current level of

percapita consumption of aquatic foods (19.7 kg in 2013, SOFIA, 2016) is necessary to uphold

due to the increasing global population. For this, the world would require an additional 23

million tonnes of seafood by 2020. It can be expected that only aquaculture can meet the

demand of this additional seafood production, which is estimated to contribute around 93.2

million metric tonnes by 2030 (World fish report 2016).

In order to increase aquaculture yields, the country needs additional resources. In

addition to the problem of finding the resources, there are many other factors such as

increasing operational costs, the high cost of land for culture, the high cost of feed

ingredients or commercial feed, production and disposal of waste sludge, discharge of

effluent from aquaculture farms hinders the economic success or viability of commercial

aquaculture. Nowadays, prawn farming becomes a major aquaculture venture in the coastal

states of India. As the problem arises in the shrimp industry, the prawn farmer gains more

interest due to their higher prices in the market. prawn get a high price of Rs. 220 per kg in

the local markets of many coastal states like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamilnadu, etc. prawn

farmers should be skilled to practice intensive fertilization and extensive feeding in ponds.

C) Basis & Presumptions

I. The Crop will be grown and marketed within 3 to 4 months of estimated time span.

II. The cost of machinery & equipment /materials indicated refers to a particular make

and the prices are approximate to these prevailing at the time of preparation of this

profile.

III. The cost of digging and construction of ponds are estimated approximately at the

time of preparation of this profile.

IV. The Crop seeds were grown without using any chemical substances with the

View to supply healthy prawn as outcome.

VI. Depreciation on ponds will charged @ 15% p.a.

VII. Estimated crops per annum will be 3.

VIII. The market price for one kg of prawn approximately.

IX. Twenty five percent of seeds will be lost during Growing/raring process.

(i.e. estimated normal loss )

D) Implementation Schedule:
The following steps involves in the implementation of the project.

Sl. No. Activity

I. Selection of Site.

II. Form of Ownership ( Own )

III. Feasibility Report.

IV. Entrepreneurship Memorandum

V. Arrangement of Finance

VI. Construction of pond / tank ( 15ft * 12ft * 5 ft each)

VII. Procurement of seeds and feed along with feeding machines.

VIII. Recruitment of Manpower

IX. Selection of marketing channel

X. Miscellaneous power and water connection etc.

E) Growth Performance:
Growth performance of fishes, length, and weight were measured at an interval of 15

days by weighing ten fishes from each treatment replicates randomly. Fishes were starved

for an overnight prior to sampling. Total body length of the fish was measured using a

measurement scale while an electronic weighing balance was used to measure the body

weight of the fish. Different growth parameters like specific growth rate (SGR), percentage

weight gain (PWG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER).Agricultural

lime , molasses and probiotic were used for Fertility.

1) Production Capacity (Per Annum):

Quantity: 1500 (kgs) per crop

3 crops per annum so that 4500 (kgs) of outcome will be released per annum

Value : Rs. 9,90,000.00

2) Pollution Control:

The unit will not create any pollution problems. However, Biofloc Technology is eco-

friendly procedure.

3) Energy Conservation:

Suitable measures should be adopted to use electricity.
