Eutectic 29240 Powder

Description

29240 is an atomized Tin-based alloy powder suitable for coating application using combustion thermal spray
â â
equipment such as the TeroDyn 2000 or TeroDyn 3000 systems when equipped with the specially designed
low temperature LT Accessory Air Shroud Package. The Tin alloy is similar to SAE 23 type II Babbitt. It can
be used for rebuilding most common tin-based babbitt bearings. It is not recommended for those containing
significant amounts of lead.

Application Procedures

For Light-Duty Bearings and Thin Build-ups ( <0.060 inch)

* Remove all old babbitt and fatigued material.

* Clean and degrease
* Thread surface with a 90o tool, approximately 16 to 20 threads per inch or Grit blast with 24
grit angular aluminum oxide.
* Apply a bond coat of Eutectic 50000, 0.005 inch thick.
* Preheat to 250oF.
* Apply 29240 using recommended parameters.

To apply babbitt to rebuild cast babbitt

* Old babbitt should be machined from the surface to a depth which will remove any smeared or
oil-ridden babbitt.
* If circular the surface should be threaded; If flat the surface should be grooved with 0.030 inch
furrows.
* Paint surface with 157 PA.
* Apply heat with the TeroDyn torch with the air in the “off” position. When the 157 is molten
it will be very evident by the bright , shiny appearance of the surface. Note that 157 PA melts
at 430oF and babbitt melts about 460oF.
* Using a natural bristle brush which is wet with water tin the surface with 157 PA by spreading
the molten solder with the brush. This will remove the flux and cover the entire surface with a
thin layer of 157 solder. Repeat this procedure of heating and tinning until flux is gone and
surface is covered.
* Reheat until the tinned layer is molten (wet and shiny).
* Turn on air to the LT Shroud and spray the first layer of 29240 onto the molten surface.
* Continue to spray using uniform passes until the coatings surface takes on a golden tint. If
this point is reached a discontinuous spray technique must be adopted to prevent the 29240
from melting and sagging. Allow a 4 count between passes for heat in the coating to dissipate.
* Continue this technique until desired thickness of coating is built up.
Application Procedures (continued)

To Apply Babbitt onto a Previously Coated Babbitt Surface

* Clean and degrease the surface.

* Dry machine the surface to restore concentricity.
* Preheat the surface until a shine or wet appearance develops (a glaze).
* Apply a thin coating of 29240.
* Allow the part to cool to 250oF and commence coating to the final dimension. Begin using a
discontinuous spray technique upon the first appearance of a brownish tint on the surface.

For Heavy Duty Bearing Applications

* Remove all old babbitt from the shell

* Clean and degrease the surface.
* Machine the surface with fine threads no more than 8 hours before coating.
* “Tin” the shell using 157 PA or Eutectic 157 with Flux 157.
Tinning is accomplished by coating the shell with a thin layer of the tin solder which is heated
to its melting point. Apply heat from the back side of the shell.
* Wipe molten flux off surface with a wet natural bristle brush. This will spread the solder and
remove any contaminants.
* With the tinned surface just molten, apply a thin coating of 29240. Allow the shell to cool
down to about 250oF and apply coating to the final dimension. Begin using a discontinuous
spray technique upon the first appearance of a brownish tint on the surface.

Notes:
Tinning is essential to produce high bond strength between the shell and coating of 29240, 29240 by itself
cannot be used for tinning.
Sharp edges must be chamfered and notched to lock coatings in position.
Grit blasting with a coarse grade of aluminum oxide or chilled iron should be employed whenever possible.
