What is engineering?
Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to solve technical problems and create
new systems, products or devices to benefit civilization.

engineering is defined as “the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural
sciences gained by study, experience and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to
utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind”.Chemistry is
a part of basic sciences and it is known as central science, because it is important to so many
other fields of scientific study.

There are various uses of chemistry in field of engineering like

Mechanical engineering
Mechanical engineering is on of the broadest and most versatile discipline of engineering. It
involves the design, production, analysis and maintenance of mechanical systems. Except design,
chemistry plays a very important role in all other mechanical engineering fields. Ex; Energy
science and engineering, Nanotechnology, Material science and engineering, Tribology (study
related to friction) etc., require in depth knowledge of chemistry which are parts of mechanical
engineering.

Energy science and engineering: Energy is one of the most significant challenges
facing humanity and is a central focus of mechanical engineering’s contribution to society.
Hence students of mechanical engineering need detailed elective courses on chemical fuels and
Combustion chemistry (kinetics and thermodynamics).

Nanotechnology: The miniaturization of devices and systems of ever increasing complexity

has been a fascinating and productive engineering endeavor during the past few decades. Micro
and nanotechnology can have tremendous impact on a wide range of mechanical systems [Ex:
Micro or Nano electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) which needs the knowledge of
chemistry at molecular level]. In order to prepare the students of mechanical engineering in
miniaturing of devices, certainly, need a detailed elective course on Nano-chemistry.

Material science and engineering, which is a part of mechanical engineering rest

heavily on physical chemistry, while there are more traditional applications in polymer
processes, new areas of development are in composite and advanced materials. An elective
course in “Physical chemistry” (or chemistry of materials) is essential, in order to prepare the
students of mechanical engineering in materials science and engineering.

Chemistry in mechanical engineering is dominated in courses like Metallurgy, Material

Science. One would need to understand various atomic level structures of materials,
strengthening ,hardening mechanisms. Various stages of material transformation during
heat treatment. Effect of alloying elements on the material properties.
It is important to understand MATERIALS.

Mechanical engineer learns Structures. They must be able to design structure which must be
able to hold a static and dynamic loads. For example, an excavator which is designed by the
engineer must be able to lift a heavy loads.

In the process of design, an engineer must make a design requirement. In this case, lets say
the engineer is required to design an excavator that is able to lift 100 tons of loads.

Different materials gives you different strength. Iron is better than plastic, for example. So,
you need to learn the material strength. To learn it, you need to learn basic of Chemistry.
Why? Because material strength depends on its structure on molecular level.

So, to be able to design the excavator, you need to learn materials which requires you to
learn basic chemistry..
