Foreword
நம் ொைதம் ஆன்மீ க ொைம் ரியம் மிக்க பதசம். இரைவரன
அரடய இரசரய ஒரு ொலமொய் அரமத்துக் பகொண்ட
மகொன்களின் எண்ணிக்ரக நம் தொய் திருநொட்டில் ஏைொளம்.
இரைவரன குழந்ரதயொக, கொதலனொக, கணவனொக, தொயொக,
நண் னொக, பசவகனொக எண்ணி ொடிய ஆழ்வொர்கள்,
நொயன்மொர்கள், சொதுக்கள், கவிஞர்கள் என்று ல ஞொனியர்
வொழ்ந்த பூமி இது.
அம்மகொன்கள் க்தி பநைி பசொட்ட பசொட்ட இயற்ைிய சில
ொடல்கரள நொம் இன்று பகட்க இருக்கிபைொம். சில பவற்று
பமொழி ொடல்களுக்கொன விளக்கமும் இந்த வழிகொட்டியில்

Meaning :
Oh Lord Guruguha, born in the lake Sharavana, come quickly and guide
me. You are attended on by Vishnu, Cupid, Brahma, kings, and Lord Shiva.
You are contemplated in the hearts of those devoid of passions. You are
worshipped by the celestials and the sages. The son of the great Tyagaraja,
oh Kumara, you dispel the three kinds of afflictions. Your divine feet are
extolled by the serpent king, and you take delight in the religious rituals
performed by the righteous ones. You, the great Yogi, take delight is the
minds of sages who perform Yoga and Rajayog

Meaning
Sri Thyagarajaswamy pleads with Lord Rama to give him the post of a guard for
Rama. The symbolic meaning is that he always wants to be in his presence always
(Sri Rama's Sannidhi).
O Lord rAma! Bestow on me (“iyyavayya”) the privilege (“kolu”) of being in Your

service as a servitor (“Bantu rIti”).
In the Anupallavi, Sri Thyagaraja Swamy says that, the guard’s post should be
such that he is empowered to destroy all the demons which are
Arishadvargas (Arishad Vargas are the six passions of the mind: Kama - lust,
craze, desire; Krodha - anger, hatred; Lobha - greed, miserliness, narrow minded;
Moha - delusory emotional attachment; Mada or Ahankara - pride, stubborn
mindedness; and Matsarya - envy, jealousy, show or vanity, and pride) and since
the guard is empowered to do so, he needs such a guard's post.

O Lord rAma! Bestow on me the privilege of being in Your service as a true (“nija”)
servitor (“Bantu rIti”) who can knock down (“goTTi” the six internal enemies
(“mad(A)dula”) beginning (“modalaina”) with desire kAma (sugar cane archer –
“tuNTaviNTivAni” ), conceit etc to the ground (“nEla”) by thrashing these
(“gUlajEyu”).
In the Caranam, Thyagaraja says that the sublimated (“rOmAncam(a)nu”) version

of kama is devotion that acts as his strong shield (“ghanakancukamu”). Tyagaraja
requests that he should be blessed with the emblem (“mudra”) of Ramabhakti
(“rAmabhaktuD(a)nu”), given a sword (“khaDgamivi”) called Rama Naama (the
name of Rama) to perform his guard's job. - O Lord! all these will shine
(“rAjillun(a)yya”) on the person of this tyAgarAja.

சுவொமி தயொனந்த சைஸ்வதி அவர்கள் திருவொரூரில்
ிைந்தவர். சுவொமி சின்மயொநந்தரின் சிஷ்யர். இவர் அர்ஷ
வித்யொ என்ை ப யரில் குருகுலங்கரள உலகம் முழுதும்
நடத்தியவர். மதங்கள் ஒன்பை என்ை பகொள்ரகயுரடய இவர்

Swamy Dayananda Saraswathi was born in Thiruvarur. He was a disciple

of Swamy Chinmayananda. He founded so many Gurukulams across the
world named Arsha Vidya Centers. Religion One on One is the principal of
Swamy Dayananda. He was a good writer and published so many books.

Meaning
Oh Lord Shiva, Shiva the destroyer,Shiva who appeared himself.

God shiva who carries Ganga and is merciful,
Who helps me to cross the ocean of birth.
He who is prabrahma without any characteristics ,
He who is beyond everything that is going, coming and the past.
He who is beyond properties, who is infinite,
He who is endless , joy filled , wonderful and deathless Shivalinga.
God who does vigorous dance to the beat of drums,
The God worshipped by sage Mathanga , He who is clad by the sky,
The God who cannot be seen in true form ,
The God who is forever spotlessly pure, The God Who is forever dancing,
The lord of the stage , The Lords of everybody.

மகொன் க ிர் தொஸ், இந்தியொவின் க்தி இயக்கத்தில் முக்கிய ங்கு

வகித்தவர், இந்து மதம் அல்லது இஸ்லொத்ரத நம் ொதவர்.
உண்ரமயொன கடவுள் நீதியின் ொரதயில் இருப் வர்,
பூமியிலுள்ள அரனத்து உயிரினங்கரளயும் தனது பசொந்த
சுயமொகக் கருதி, உலக விவகொைங்களிலிருந்து பசயலற்ை
முரையில் ிரிக்கப் ட்ட ந ருடன் இருக்கிைொர் என்று க ர்
ீ
நம் ினொர்.
அவைது வொழ்க்ரக இரதச் சுற்ைியிருந்தொலும், அவருரடய
கவிரதயொல் தொன் நொம் இங்பக இருக்கிபைொம்.
அவர் இன்றும் அரனவைொலும் ைவலொக விரும் ப் டும் சில
குைிப் ிடத்தக்க கவிரதகரள எழுதியுள்ளொர். அவைது சொகீ க்கள்
(சொக்ஷி என்ை வொர்த்ரதயிலிருந்து உருவொனது) இந்தி, ஞ்சொ ி,
ிரிஜ் ொஷொ, அவ்தி, ைொஜஸ்தொனி ப ொன்ைவற்ைிலிருந்து
பசொற்கரளக் பகொண்டுள்ளன. இந்தி இலக்கியத்தில், அவர்
யன் டுத்திய பமொழி ' ஞ்ச்பமல் கிச்ச்டி (ஐந்து பமொழிகளின்
கலரவ)' என்று அரழக்கப் டுகிைது.
Kabir Das, who was a poet and played main part in India’s Bhakti Movement, was
not a believer of either Hinduism or Islam and questioned the existence of both.
Kabir believed that true God is with the person who is on the path of righteousness,
considered all creatures on earth as his own self and who is passively detached
from the affairs of the world.
Although his life revolved around this, his poetry is what we are here for.
He has written some remarkable poetry which is widely loved by everyone
today. Kabir used more than one dialect in his poems. His saakhees (originated
from word sakshi means witness) have words from hindi, punjabi, brijbhasha,
avdhi, rajsthani etc. In hindi literature, the language he used, is known as
'Panchmel Khichdi ( a mixture of five language)'.

English Meaning
Here Kabir says Teacher is even greater than God. He says, if teacher
and God are both in front of me, who will I greet first. He then says, it is
only because of teacher’s teaching that I am able to see God.

ீ கூறுரகயில், ஆசிரியர் கடவுரள விட
ப ரியவர். அவர் கூறுகிைொர், ஆசிரியர் மற்றும் கடவுள்
இருவரும் எனக்கு முன்னொல் இருந்தொல், நொன் முதலில்
யொரை வொழ்த்துபவன். ஆசிரியரின் ப ொதரனயொல் தொன்
என்னொல் கடவுரளப் ொர்க்க முடிகிைது.
2. Bada hua to kya hua jaise ped khajoor.

panthee ko chhaaya nahee phal laage ati door .
English Meaning
It is no use being very big or rich if you can not do any good to others.
For example, Palm tree is also very tall, but it is of no use to a traveller
as it provides no shade and the fruit is also at the top, so no one can eat
easily.
தமிழ்பபாருள்
நீங்கள் மற்ைவர்களுக்கு எந்த நன்ரமயும் பசய்ய

முடியொவிட்டொல், மிகப் ப ரியவைொகபவொ,
ணக்கொைைொகபவொ இருந்தும் யனில்ரல. உதொைணமொக,
ரனமைம் மிகவும் உயைமொனதொக இருக்கிைது, ஆனொல்
இது ஒரு யணிக்கும் எந்தப் யனும் தருவதில்ரல,
ஏபனனில் அது நிழரலயும் அளிக்கொது, ழமும் பமபல
உள்ளது, எனபவ யொரும் எளிதில் சொப் ிட முடியொது.

3. Maala pherat jug bhaya, phira na man ka pher .

kar ka man ka daar de, man ka manaka pher .
English Meaning
Kabir says, you spent your life turning the beads of rosary, but could not
turn your own heart. Leave the rosary and try and change the evil in your
heart.

உருட்டிக்பகொண்டு நீங்கள் உங்கள் வொழ்க்ரகரய
கழித்தீர்கள், ஆனொல் உங்கள் பசொந்த இதயத்ரத மொற்ை
முடியவில்ரல. பஜ மொரலரய விட்டுவிட்டு, உங்கள்
இதயத்தில் உள்ள தீரமரய மொற்ை முயற்சிக்கவும்.
4. Paathar pooje hari mile , to main poojoo pahaad |

Ghar kee chaakee koee na pooje, jaako pees khae sansaar ||
English Meaning
Kabir says people worship idols made from stone. If it was possible to
reach God this way, he would worship a Hill. Instead, noone worships
home flour mill (chakki) which gives us the flour to eat.

5. othee padhi padhi jag mua, pandit bhaya na koy

dhaee aakhar prem ka, padhe so pandit hoy
English Meaning
Reading books everyone died, none became any wise. One who read the
world of love, only becomes wise.
புத்தகங்கரள டிப் வபனல்லொம் ஞொனியர் ஆவதில்ரல,

இைந்து தொன் ப ொகின்ைனர். அன் ின் உலகத்ரத
டித்தவபன ஞொனியொகிைொன்.
6. Kaal kare so aaj kar, aaj kare so ab .

pal mein parlay hoegee, bahuri karega kab .
English Meaning
Tomorrow’s work do today, today’s work do now, if the moment is lost
now when will the work be done.
நொரளய பவரலரய இன்று பசய்யுங்கள், இன்ரைய

பவரலரய இப்ப ொது பசய்யுங்கள், இத் தருணத்ரத
பதொரலந்துவிட்டொல், பவரல எப்ப ொது பசய்யப் டும்.
7. dheere-dheere re mana, dheere sab kuchh hoy |

maalee seenche sau ghada, rtu aae phal hoy ||
English Meaning
Kabir tells his mind to slowdown, everything in life happens slowly, in its
own time. The fruit only comes when the season comes, so will the fruit
of life come in its own time.

ீ தனது மனரத மந்தநிரலயிபலபய இருக்க பசொல்கிைொர்,
வொழ்க்ரகயில் எல்லொம் பமதுவொக நடக்கிைது, அதன் பசொந்த

வொழ்க்ரகயின் ழம் இச்ரசயின் டிபய வரும்.
8. duhkhmeinsumiran sab karesukhmeinkarainakoy.

jo sukhmeinsumirankareduhkhkaahe ko hoy .
English Meaning
When someone is in distress we look up at the God. However when things
are going good, we forget him. Kabir highlights that we shall not suffer if
we pray to him during good time.
யாராவது துன்பத்தில் இருக்கும்பபாது நாம் கடவுரைப்

பார்க்கிபறாம். இருப்பினும் விஷயங்கள் நன்றாக நடக்கும்பபாது,
நாம் அவரர மறந்து விடுகிபறாம். நல்ல பநரத்திலும் நாம் அவரர
நிரனத்தால், என்றும் துன்பம் நம்ரம அணுகாது என்று கபீர்
எடுத்துக்காட்டுகிறார்.

English Meaning

Tulsidas is considered to be one of the greatest of the Hindu saints of India. He is
is considered to be one of the most famous representatives of the Bhakti school
of Hinduism. His literary work was most impressive. He was a Sanskrit scholar,

known for his "Tulsi-KritaRamayan", this is also known
as "Ramacharitamanas". He is also well known for his "Hanuman Chalisa". In all,
he composed 22 major literary works in his lifetime. Tulsidas wrote several popular

Saint Namdev, a contemporary saint-poet of Saint Dnyaneshwar, is considered a

prominent religious poet of Maharashtra. He was one the earliest writers who wrote
in the Marathi language. He is the foremost proponent of the Bhagwad-Dharma
who reached beyond Maharashtra, right into Punjab. He also wrote some hymns
in Hindi and Punjabi. His depth of devotion and talent in delivering Kirtan was of
such a high standard that it is said even the Lord Pandurang swayed to his tune.
Despite being a proponent of the Warkari sect, Saint Namdev established religious

Eknath Maharaj was a scholar and poet-saint in the Bhakthi tradition. Eknath
composed over 4000 devotional songs in Hindi and Marathi languages. Eknath

these scriptures from Sanskrit to Marathi. Eknath’s compositions in Marathi, the

the ultimate truth (brahma swaroopay) and as the embodiment of the learnings of
the Vedas (srutimoorthiroopay) and says that his mind is reveling in Lord
Ranganatha.

Tukaram wrote many poems in Marathi. He was a wandering poet and preacher.
He developed the lyric genre of the abhang, a short lyric that depicted the life of
the working people. Tukaram’s aphoristic abhangs used colloquial language;
many of them became proverbs and sayings. He supported human equality.

brick with his hands resting on the waist.
There is a Basil leaves' necklace in His neck and He is wearing a yellow golden
silk garment around the waist. I am in perpetual love with this face of the Lord.
Fish shaped ear rings are shining in His ears and the well known 'Koustubh'
precious stone is glistening in His neck.
Tukaram says, I will keep looking ceaselessly at the holy face of the God with
love; this is my complete happiness.

Sri PurandaraDasa was a great devotee of Lord Krishna, a poet and a musician.
He is considered as the father of Carnatic Music. PurandaraDasa is said to have
composed around 475,000 songs, in Kannada and Sanskrit. Only about a 1000
are available now. PurandaraDasa’s songs express his love for Lord Narayana,
especially Sri Krishna. He sings of various aspects of Sri Krishna’s life. His
compositions are enchantingly beautiful and these have inspired many musician-
poets in Karnataka.

மிரகயொகொது. அவைது இரசயரமப் ின் ப ரும் குதி பதச க்தி
மற்றும் க்தி என வரகப் டுத்தப் டுகின்ைன. ொைதி
அடிப் ரடயில் ஒரு ொடல் கவிஞர். “கண்ணன் ொட்டு” “ ொஞ்சொலி
ச தம்” “குயில் ொட்டு” என் து ொைதியின் சிைந்த கவிரத
பவளியீட்டின் எடுத்துக்கொட்டுகள்.
SubramaniyaBharathiyar was born on 11th December 1882, in a village called

Ettayapuram in Tirunelveli District in Tamil Nadu and his childhood name was
Subbiah. Significantly, a new age in Tamil literature began with Subramaniya
Bharathi. Most part of his compositions are classifiable as short lyrical outpourings
on patriotic, devotional and mystic themes. Bharathi was essentially a lyrical
poet. “Kannan Pattu” “PanchaliSabatam” “KuyilPattu” are examples of Bharathi’s
great poetic output.
