Guidelines for Research Course

(Thesis Writing) for Proposal Defense

I. Rationale

In order to have a uniformity in teaching the Research Courses (Methods of Research and
Thesis Writing), especially in terms of the course contents, competencies and skills to be developed
among the students. Likewise, the course requirements, the manner of proposal defense and final
oral defense, the rubrics to be used in evaluating the students’ research written output and
performance in the oral defense have to be standardized.

Hence, the following guidelines for Research 1 and 2 courses are provided:

II. Course Descriptions

A. Cluster Courses

1. Research 1 – Methods of Research ( 3 units )

This course is designed to give the students the background and skills necessary to
understand the research methods and designs used in conducting a research in related field of
study. Students will learn to identify the procedures and assess the major methods of research as
applied in different fields of knowledge. Also, on how to gather research information, selection of
appropriate research design, report conducted research findings, and the ethical concerns involved
in engaging research. In this course, the students will learn on how to prepare a thesis proposal.

2. Research 2 – Thesis Writing ( 3 units )

This course will provide the students with the knowledge and research skills on how to
conduct an actual research or thesis following the scientific procedures. In addition, the students
will have a wider perspectives on how to comprehensively analyze, interpreted, and present the
findings.

III. General Guidelines

The faculty teaching the Research Courses have to strictly observe the following:

Since Research 1 and Research 2 belong to a single cluster, then only one faculty should
teach the Courses.

A. Coverage of the Courses

1. Research 1 – Methods of Research

The faculty has to teach all the contents of the course, Methods of Research. Students should
be provided with a broader knowledge on the different types of research, and their applications to
their respective programs. Also, students have to be guided in the preparation of their thesis
proposal.

2. Research 2 – Thesis Writing

The faculty has to concentrate in teaching the students on how to prepare comprehensively
the results and discussion of research findings. More so, on how to analyze and interpret statistical
data, and the integration of related studies and literature to support the results.

B. Assigning of Thesis Adviser

After taking the cluster courses, Research 1 and Research 2, students are now ready to
prepare their respective thesis proposals, and eventually, the completion of their thesis. In doing
these, students have to be guided by an adviser who is an expert in the field.

The following guidelines have to be observed in grouping the students, and in assigning
thesis advisers:

1. There will only be a maximum of two (2) students in a group or a student may
have the option to work alone for his/ her thesis.
2. The ETEEAP Director shall be the one to assign the Thesis Adviser for the
students, considering the expertise of the faculty.
3. Adviser’s consultations with the students are scheduled with the ETEEAP office.
Consultation period has to be done inside the University only. Adviser has to
accomplish the consultation form right after the consultation period.
4. The Adviser has to guide the students in the formulation of their thesis titles,
and the completion of their thesis proposal which include the following parts:
4.1 Introduction
4.2 Methodology
4.3 Research Instrument
4.4 Bibliography
5. After the Proposal Defense, the Thesis Adviser has to guide the students in the
preparation of the Results and Discussion. Also, in the formulation of
conclusions and recommendations.
6. The Thesis Adviser has to guide the students in the preparation for the final oral
defense. He/ She has to orient the students on what to expect during the final
defense.

C. Proposal Defense
Prior to the presentation of the Proposal Defense, the following procedures have to be
considered:
1. The Thesis Adviser has to recommend his/ her advisee/s for a Proposal Defense,
only if he/ she is confident that the written proposal of his/ her advisee/s is
complete, and well prepared.
2. The Thesis Adviser has to write a request letter addressed to the ETEEAP
Director, but to be noted by the Program Coordinator for the schedule of the
Proposal Defense. Attached the copy of the manuscript of the thesis proposal.
3. Once the request letter is approved by the Director, the Proposal Defense will
push through as scheduled.
4. All copies of the thesis proposal must be distributed to the panel and Program
Coordinator at least two (2) days before the scheduled proposal defense. Failure
to do so, the Adviser has to request for another schedule.
5. The panel will consist of one (1) faculty expert, one (1) statistician or another
faculty expert. The Program Coordinator will serve as Observer. The Thesis
Adviser should be present; otherwise, the defense will be postponed.
6. The panel will have to make use of the rubric to reflect their comments and
suggestions for the betterment of the thesis.
7. All the comments and suggestions of the panel have to be included in the final
written thesis, and to be presented in the final oral defense.
