communicators and active community members
● Respect their common humanity, shared guardianship of the planet, and their responsibility to create a better
and more peaceful world
● Be people who take control of their lives; people of integrity who are a positive influence in the lives of others

To achieve these goals, it is necessary to set certain policies and ensure that these are upheld and understood by all. The
following essential agreements are the non-negotiable code of conduct at East-West International School:

Everyone agrees ● All individuals are to be treated with dignity and fairness, irrespective of age, gender, race,
language, sexual orientation, religion or role at the school.
● School begins at 7:10 am. Arriving late to class is not acceptable. See the Attendance
Policy for more information.
● Time for learning is valuable. Every lesson is to be used constructively for learning,
whether learning happens at school or virtually.

Students agree to ● Arrive to class on time, with the correct books and materials needed. If a student is absent
for the day, they are not allowed to participate in any after-school activities.

Attendance Policy
Types of Absences

Excused Absences include when a student needs to miss school due to religious ceremonies, family events (such as
weddings & funerals), or illness

Unexcused Absences include when a student misses a class or school for reasons not listed above, including and not limited
to: traffic, waking up late, or other similar reasons

Why do we have an attendance policy?

East-West students are asked to develop in lines with our CLEAR School Goals. Coming to school every day, and arriving
on-time to all classes are expectations that promote personal responsibility and drive student academic achievement. If
students miss time from classes, they are not able to learn as well as they could, disrupting their teachers and friends.

What happens when I miss classes?

Absences #1-7 No negative effect on a grade

Absence #8 No negative effect on a grade; Students, Parents and Teacher notified

Absence #9 A one-step reduction in the grade for a class (ex. - if a student’s final grade was a “B,” their grade
would be lowered to a B-)

Absence #10 Another one-step reduction in the grade (ex. - from a B- to a C+)

Every additional absence A one-step reduction in the grade

Absence #15 No credit for the course will be awarded

*Grade 12 students, during their second semester, may miss up to 12 classes in a course before it affects their grade.
Any student who has their grade lowered due to absences may submit a written appeal of the grade penalty to the Head
of School with supporting documentation (i.e. doctor’s note).

What happens when I’m late to school or to class?

Students who arrive at school after 7:10 am will be admitted to classes through the main office. Students who arrive
after 7:45 am will not be allowed to attend school for the day. A student who misses more than 15 minutes of a class
period will be considered tardy from that class for attendance purposes. Three instances of unexcused tardiness are
equivalent to one absence.

What about home-based learning?

On-time and regular attendance to advisory check-ins and classes during home-based learning is just as important as
during on-campus learning. Students are expected to check in with their advisors for attendance through Google Meet
every morning between 7:00-7:10 am. Attendance in classes is also tracked, in line with East-West’s Participation Rubric.
All of the above listed requirements related to attendance are still in place whether students are doing remote or
in-person learning.

Plagiarism Policy
Section I - What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism means using ideas, opinions, factual information, or language from someone without giving that person
appropriate credit. Plagiarism is fraud. Student writers are sometimes confused as to what should be cited. In addition
to direct quotations, paraphrases and summaries of opinions of factual information not formerly known to the writer
must also be cited. The exception to this rule is information termed general knowledge, information that is widely
known and stated in a number of sources. Determining what is general knowledge can be complicated, so it is wise to
remember the adage, "When in doubt, cite."

Section II - How to Avoid Plagiarism?

In academic work, credit should generally be given in an appropriate format. At EWIS, this means all works including
reports, PowerPoint presentations, Web creations, posters, brochures, etc., must have citations. Your teachers will
determine which format to cite (i.e. MLA, APA, Harvard, Oxford, Chicago, etc.). It is very important to understand how
to prevent committing plagiarism when using material from a source. If you wish to quote verbatim (i.e.
word-for-word), you must use the exact words and punctuation of the original and you must include quotation marks
and page numbers in your citation. In general, using large amounts of quoted text is not appropriate. When you quote
large amounts of text you lose ownership of the paper. If you want to paraphrase ideas from a source, you must do a
thorough job of putting the ideas into your own language and you must cite the source in the required format.

Citing correctly is a benefit that demonstrates the depth of research that has been carried out - resulting in better
marks on assignments and portfolio work. It's also a prerequisite to studying at university level and adds credibility to
your work.

Section III - Acceptable Sources of Information

Students are NOT allowed to use sites such as Wikipedia, Quora, or other similar resources to research topics or
create papers or projects as cited sources without specific teacher permission. All sources of information must be
quality resources and meet the standard criteria for a quality site or source.

Section IV - Copyright Violations (Pictures, Images, and Music on the Web)

Citation and copyright rules also apply to students who use photos, music, or links from Internet sources. Information
and graphics accessed electronically must also be cited, giving credit to the sources. This material includes but is not
limited to pictures, graphics and music from searches and websites. Putting someone else's Internet material on your
project, whether it is a paper, electronic, or web based project, is stealing intellectual property. Correct attribution
needs to be followed for legal use of any Creative Commons media.

Section V - Student Consequences for Failure to Adhere to Policy

If a student uses a site that does not match the standards for quality as outlined above, the following consequences
are established:
● The paper or project will not be accepted by the teacher and will receive a zero. If a student fails to properly
cite their sources, plagiarizes, or uses excessive quotes in their paper or project, the assignment will not be
accepted by the teacher and will receive a zero. Furthermore, students will be requested to meet with the
teacher and either the Head of School (Mr. Jeffrey Kane) or the Head of Secondary school (Mr. Tim LaRocco)
to speak about how to repair the mistrust and harm caused by such actions.
● If an incident of cheating or plagiarising happens a second time, at any time throughout the student’s tenure
at EWIS, the student will automatically fail the course. Furthermore, a meeting with the Secondary Principal
and Head of School will take place to determine future matriculation at EWIS.
● If an incident of cheating or plagiarising happens a third time, at any time throughout the student’s tenure at
EWIS, the student will be asked to leave EWIS.

Students do not have to be granted an opportunity to correct work and turn it in for partial credit. Students will be
given ample time, instruction, and guidance regarding how to find resources, cite, and use quotes wisely. It is the
responsibility of the student to let the teacher know if they are having trouble with accessing, using, or citing sources.

Plagiarism and Cheating Code of Integrity Agreement

I have read and understand the foregoing document and I understand that plagiarism and cheating are serious
academic offenses that will result in severe consequences. I agree to only submit my original work for credit and to
follow the procedures for finding, using, and citing information as directed by the EWIS Plagiarism policy. Violation of
these rules may result in one or more of the following consequences: a failing grade on the assignment/ test without
the opportunity to make up the work; a parent conference; a formal letter placed in the student’s discipline file; or
other consequences determined by the Principal.

Fail Policy
Purpose: This policy aims to clarify for students, teachers and parents what is to happen when a student receives a grade
of “U” in a East-West International School high school class.

Any class that a student receives a “U” grade in for the semester will result in them not receiving credit for having taken
that class.

● First semester:
○ If a student receives a U, they will not receive credit for the class. If they earn a C or higher in the second
semester, they will not have to take any remedial classes during the summer to make up the work,
however they will not have received credit for the first semester.
● Second semester
○ If a student receives a U, they will not receive credit for the class. If they received a C- or lower in the
first semester, they must do one of the following:
■ Take an EWIS Internal summer school program or an independent study course. This will be
dependent on teacher availability.
■ Take an External MOOC from Coursera with teacher and administrator approval. They must
purchase the certificate at the end of the course and present that to the school before the next
academic year begins in order to make up the credit.
